So I got into comics and graphic novels about a year ago and I just now found out about /co/. Please vets come in and bless me with your based shit opinions and lets get some good talks going!

>fav story arc: Court Of Owls in case anyone wants to hate on it
>>
Gonna give it to you hard but straight.

1. Comics is the preferred term over graphic novels unless you are specifically talking about large volumes that are not compilations of earlier issues.
2. Comics are not just superheroes. Explore all possible genres and publishers to find what you like best.
3. Follow writers/artists you like, NOT characters you like.
4. Ignore the fag who shits on anyone who asks for recs. He is eternally buttblasted but ultimately impotent.
5. Do NOT only read what people recommend. Go out of your way to find things that look interesting to YOU. Don't be discouraged from reading things because someone on /co/ said it was shit. Read it for yourself and find out. You have to read bad comics before you can know what good comics are.
6. I recommend you read Gaiman's Sandman, Moore's Supreme, and Kirby's Fantastic Four to start off.

Have a good time.
>>
>>86775599
Much appreciated based anon.
I literally just bought Sandman Preludes and Nightmares and am excited to get into it. I don't know much about writers or artists other than I love a lot of Brian K Vaughns work and Greg Capullo draws one hell of a Batman.
>>
>>86775599
>1. Comics is the preferred term over graphic novels unless you are specifically talking about large volumes that are not compilations of earlier issues.
You should follow this up by actually recommending a graphic novel.

For example, I recommend this one.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/3nrdp48s4pddr83/A+Contract+with+God+%281978%2C+2000%29.cbr

Full of graphical novelty goodness, just what a person needs to begin to understand the difference between graphic novels and monthly floppies.
>>
>>86775508
Tell us what you've read and what you're interested in, dammit.
>>86775636
If you get into Sandman, keep in mind the Lucifer spin-off for when you finish the fourth volume.
>>
read manga too

I've read Saga, Runaways, Teen Titans (2014) Deathstroke Vol 2 and 3. I'm still fairly green so I don't completely know my tastes yet. But I obsessed over the Cartoon Network Teen Titans show so things that can kind of mirror that energy captivate me. I dont enjoy comics that take themselves too seriously but all I really want is to have a good time reading a title.
>tl;dr Something fun but with adult themes.
>DC is a favorite but not required.
>>
>>86775714
>>86775779
OH Also Nemesis. It was short but fucking incredible perfection in every panel.
>>
>>86775779
Saga of the Swamp Thing by Alan Moore
Watchmen
Squadron Supreme
Kraven's Last Hunt
Daredevil Born Again
Planetary
100 Bullets
Scalped

There, those should keep you busy for a while, it's mostly DC, pretty much adult oriented and it's all enjoyable as fuck.
Now tell me if Saga is worth getting into.
>>
>>86775833
Whoa much appreciated!
Saga is very captivating so far. It has a little of everything. I'm about 8 issues in and it's honestly hard to put down. It's rare that I read something where the characters feel so.. real. Honestly you won't be disappointed.

Shut up, nerd. Don't make me steal your lunch money again.
>>
>>86775960
Honestly not all that sucked in by this.
>>
Man OP, I appreciate your enthusiasm but your posts are cringe inducing.

Some of the absolute /co/ essentials, I'd say:
>JSA by Johns
>Preacher by Ennis
>Hitman by Ennis
>Animal Man by Morrison
>Green Lantern by Johns
>Batman, Batman & Robin, and Batman Inc by Morrison
>Ms. Marvel by Wilson
>Hawkeye by Fraction
>Moon Knight by Ellis
>Thunderbolts by Parker
>Aquaman by Johns

Just off the top of my head those are major touchstones of the community over the years, at least until recently you could assume most everyone here had read that stuff. Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel are from the last few years though.

Meme comics:
>Civil War by Millar
>House of M by Bendis
>Ultimates by Millar
>Ultimatum by Loeb
>Spider-Man by JMS
>Spider-Man by Slott
>Blackest Night by Johns
>Final Crisis by Morrison
>X-Men by Bendis
>Guardians of the Galaxy by Bendis
>anything involving the Inhumans from the last few years
>Avengers #200
It's ok to like some of the above
>>
>>86776018
Oh, and one more big meme:
>Neonomicon by Moore

Those have been the biggest sources of laughs I've had on here.
>>
>>86775779
>tl;dr Something fun but with adult themes.
The Authority and Nextwave by Warren Ellis
Ultimates and Old Man Logan by Mark Millar
>>
>>86776018
>Hitman by Ennis
I really ought to get into this.
>>
Been out of the DC loop since New 52 shit more or less shit itself. What's good in Rebirth? Is Booster Gold making an appearance anywhere or is continuing to get the shaft?
>>
>>86776053
I haven't been reading Rebirth but you might want to grab The Omega Men.

If you want scifi but don't like Saga, I recommend Prophet. It's the anti-Saga.

>focus on worldbuilding instead of quippy dialogue
>third person narration instead of first person
>quiet and subtle instead of loud and in-your-face
>aliens are actually alien and not humans in makeup
>no forced cliffhangers

Everything in Rebirth is good.
Booster hasn't been seen since Convergence, but I'd keep a close eye on Blue Beetle right now.
>>
>>86776053
Booster had some parts in Convergence continuing the ongoing saga that Jurgens has been doing with him for over ten years.

Also him and Ted are central characters in Justice League 3000 and 3001, which are basically the next chapter of the JLI->Formerly Known as the Justice League->I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League->Superbuddies
>>
>>86776100

I'll keep that in mind

A contract with god is a series of vignettes about people that all live in the same tenement in New York. It showcases all the highs and lows of humanity and explores so many different kinds of relationships. Its just astounding. And the paneling is loose, using round white spaces instead of the standard square boxes.
And its literally the first graphic novel.

If you wanna keep with Batman, there are plenty of stand alone graphic novels that you can add to your collection.

Year One
The Long Halloween
Both volumes of Jokers Asylum
Arkham Asylum Living Hell
Serious House on Serious Earth
The Dark Knight Returns

There's also big runs that are well loved like
Morrison's run from Black Glove to Batman Inc
Batman No Man's Land
Batman Eternal
Knight fall (aka the Azbat stuff)
