Are the books good reads? I'm kinda curious to see how much the cartoon missed out on world and character development.

Because he wanted to write new stories as soon as possible, he crammed the entire book trilogy into one 13 episode season, making it slow to start, and then extremely fast paced near the end.
And since it's mostly self-funded, it is not the best animation around.
