What is the most violent thing you've ever seen in a cartoon? My vote goes to Heavy Metal, with its brutal depiction of a kid getting impaled.

Barefoot Gen takes the cake, but I'm not sure about in the west.
Maybe something from Superjail, but those are handled so quickly that I think some of the gruesomeness is lost.
>>
>>86767407

>Barefoot Gen

Especially when you realize that that anime is an autobiography and that shit actually happened in real life.

Really just makes you pause.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI3LNQ6OGmA

This whole movie is pretty gory. It's made even more jarring because appearance-wsie the animation looks like a kids movie.
>>
>>86767351
Maybe stuff from King Star King?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO7Q1tMGE7g
This is a classic from the early internet, and edgy in an outdated way, but it's pretty graphic.
>>
for the west, probably something from watership down or the plague dogs
>>
>>86767351
If we're talking about cartoons in general anime has a lot. Genocyber, Violence Jack,Shigurui, Berserk Third Movie and many more.

If we're talking about Western only, I could think off Felidae and Watership down. It doesn't have to be that gory but it's pretty close to realism, which is fairly disturbing.

Keystone Motel when Ruby and Sapphire start fighting.
It was so emotionally scarring to me because it reminded me of how my sister's boyfriend would always talk down to me in a condescending way, and I was powerless to do anything about it.
If I tried to fight back he'd only give me big owies, and if I tried telling anybody about it then my sister would get mad at me.
I wish they broke up so I could get my revenge on that evil jerk without any consequences!

Because it was a strong statement, it made the russians back off by showing off that the US made carpet bombing entire cities be stupidly economic in both manpower and cost and the soviets were on their way to get nukes anyway.

Nukes were awful but the carpet bombing campaigns did much more damage as several cities were 60%+ burned to rubble.

Wut. That's when moral guardians were at their height.
>>
>>86770655
They weren't that annoying back then iirc, plus this movies were probably like rated AO or something. Then animation studios discovered that waifufagging is a lot more profitable.
>>
>>86770615
>no Moral Guardians to fight against

90s had just as many moralists as we have now, difference is people were willing to not listen to them. Now the soccer moms are the people doing art so they are the moralists so no one stands up to them.
>>
>>86770680
>They weren't that annoying back then iirc

Because we didnt have internet as widespread as it is now, the information that someone is offended now flies fast to a lot more people while back then you had to wait for the news to listen to politicians or soccer moms cry about violent video games or something.

>>
>>86770484
They've been used since. Just not on anyone that anyone gave a shit about. Pacific Islanders and shit so that they could gauge the effects of fallout. They haven't been used in a military strike from one country to another because the alliances formed after the war made it a bad idea, and anyone who would use them would quickly find themselves in turn nuked by every other country with them because they are nasty, nasty weapons that do more damage to the populace and infrastructure than military targets.

The whole point of the space race was to demonstrate ICBM technology and cement mutually assured destruction. The only wild card in this whole mess is North Korea, who China and Russia keep in power as a means of First Strike plausible deniability at this point. How long that lasts is a matter of how long it takes them to try something and how competent they are with their attack. So long as they don't hit the US or it's territories, they'll probably get by being forcefully invaded by China/potentially glassed themselves. Otherwise, if WWIII starts up we're basically looking at getting fucked because someone will arrive at the conclusion they are losing and their best chance of avoiding as much damage as possible is to strike first.

That scene in Legends of the galactic heros where the imperial troops are running down a corridor and there are random mutilated bodies and some guy scooping up his intestines while another guy cries for his mother while dragging his torso, yeah that shit fucked me up hard. You can show me all the gore from Genocyber and Devilman but nothing compares with that too me.

I'm upset this doesn't have more replies just because I enjoy some good SU shitposting. But you didn't do a good enough job disguising your bait so no one fell for it.

You should have talked about how the Cluster was the more horrifying concept in any western cartoon ever and the thought of being trapped in your own mind and fused with others and just a fragment of your own self and blah blah blah SU concepts so original and if only other western shows could be as daring and whatever the fuck ever.

Now that would have been well laced bait.
>>
>>86773477
Funny, most of the violence in Metalocalypse never really bothered me. It was just so over the top silly that it was funny. The sole exception to that though was that one episode where Toki tried to be all brutal and ignored that dying kid's wish to see him. I was totally not prepared to see in graphic detail the kid's rotting corpse, complete with maggots crawling all over them, with a voice screaming "You killed me! I'm dead because of you!!"

Part of me believes it was Toki hallucinating, which would explain the screaming voice.
>>
>>86773619
Anytime that had Toki going off the deep end tended to be a bit disturbing.
>>
>>86773619

right? I think people kinda dismiss the level of violence in this because its a comedy. that and brutality, death, and violence is kinda just a way of life for a true metal head and I think they really try to portray that in the series.

I think one of the things that really put the violence over the top for me was some scenario.. and I dont exactly remember cuz its been years since i've watched it but it was a bunch of people either outside a record store or a coffee shop in line and something happened that caused all the guardsmen to just open fire and massacre an entire audience of fans who're just hang out outside waiting to buy the latest album or something, the streets literally ran red and shit was insane.
>>

>>

>>
>>86773743
Context really matters when talking about violence. The more realistic looking the more disturbing.
>>
>>86773743
Sounds like the episode where they got body doubles, but I could be mistaken.
>>
>>86773743
A lot of the hyper violence is funny though, like when they literally put scalding hot coffee all over their audience and you see skin and limbs melting everywhere.

The grossest imo was the gang of deathly sick people that tore that one guy apart in the hospital while flashes of medical bills flash across the screen- that was legitimately fucked up.
>>
>>86773820

I'd have to agree. the Over the top stuff is just crazy and silly to the point where its comical. The real shit, like that scene feels pretty messed up.
>>
>>86773891

agreed, but OP kinda asked about the most violent thing i've seen, not necessarily the most disturbing. 90% of this show contains some of the most violent shit I've ever seen portrayed, even if a lot of it is comical (weird how they pull that off).

>>
I think Chef's death from South Park kind of counts too. What made it more messed up was seeing this character that we've grown attached to for most of the series just viciously murdered before us, and it wasn't a quick, painless death either.

Soviet nuclear weapons research was already well under way, the US, Soviets, and Germans were all knocking on that door since the 30s. Also, the US knew the Soviets were already grabbing German scientists (we were doing the same, Operation Paperclip).

The military had more influence in making the decision to drop the bomb than the ill-informed new president Truman. They wanted to scare Russian political types to get a leg up before the Russians dropped a bomb and did the same, scaring American politicians into conceding to unfavorable deals with Russia.

A lot of things in Japanese culture and society stem from that. I've always had a theory that the trope of tokusatsu shows where the enemy always blows up at the end is attributed to the atom bomb going off. Now, I'm talking mostly about '60s and '70s tokusatsu and there are also plenty of Kabuki and Noh play aspects that are founding factors in Japanese movies and television, but I always wondered why villains exploding became such a mainstay and while it may be attributed to substituting a flashy death knell straight out of a Kabuki play, I think that the totality of the explosion is more representative of the bomb's effect on Japanese culture and how there is no going back beyond that point in 1945 for anyone in the world.

I really cannot get into anime, I've tried and tried but the whole style is just offputting. I think the reason is that most of it is too 'busy', there's so much detail packed into every single frame that it looks cluttered. This might be fine for manga where you can just gaze at the frames to your heart's content but when you're watching a fight scene, being distracted by whirling cameras that try to cram as much superfluous detail in as possible isn't pleasant to look at, at least not to me.

If we're talking about animation or comics as a whole it's very hard to say Japan is better than the West. Many good works have come out of the country but when it's competing against all of the Americas and Europe, which also have longer histories with the mediums, the scope and variety of works is incomparable.

But since /co/ rarely talks about anything that's not capes, Cartoon Network shows and webcomics then yeah, it baffles me how anyone can consider it /co/'s content on-par with /a/'s. You know you're scraping the bottom of the barrel when you've made generals for shows like Shezow of all things.

Not true.

There are two components of a nuclear explosion.
The first is the EM radiation exposure. Not just radioactivity but infrared, UV, all the light of the sun.
This travels at the speed of light.

The next part of the explosion is the shockwave of superheated gas. The big boom that knocks everything down.
This travels at the speed of sound.

So first you'll be cooked and then you'll be exploded.

Look at the gif attached. You see everything smoking? That's because it's being exposed to the EM radiation of the nuke.
Then comes the shockwave.

The radiation attenuates a lot faster than the shockwave so the outer parts of the radius will be only really affected by the shockwave, but there's a sweet spot that'll be roasted before being obliterated

Satan worshipping
Dracula killing women like in a standard horror movie
Dracula having a flashback on his past where he impaled people and got brutally killed in battle himself, only to be reincarnated by Satan.
Baby being murdered.
Undead rising from their graves.
Corpses dissolving into dust.

The movie sucks, because its one of those movies which tries to condense way bigger story into 80 minutes. In this case its Marvel's Tomb of Dracula comics. But its a fun little detail when watching this entertaining trainwreck with bad dubs and tons of violence: Its actually a Marvel-license animated movie.

The score is the only actually good thing about the movie:

I like cartoons, but Japan does WAY more with 2D animation.

I don't know how someone could sincerely believe that America's animation industry is anywhere close to Japans. Japan produces WAY MORE and there's a incredible amount of diversity. America has like 5 channels total that even play cartoons and only HALF of ONE channel that gives an opportunity to anything that isn't an established formula [adult swim], but even they shy away from attempting 'serious' animation. (Moral Orel was canned because it went to dark, Metalocyalpse was dropped because Lazzo thought the story was getting in the way of the comedy).

How can you look at the landscape of the animation industry in America and not recognize how artificially stunted it is?

Used to be the other way around, look at the Oscar winning Tom and Jerry or Bugs Bunny's from the 50's and 60's, they are mostly gorgeous works of art when Japan's output at that time was pitiful. It was almost Flash animation before Flash existed.
The problem is that they learned from us, they saw the great output and adapted while we concentrated solely on the cost at the expense of story and art. I mean look at the DePatie-Frieling cartoons onwards, hardly any scenery, crap repeated walk cycles, terrible dialogue. I think we're only now beginning to realize how screwed up it is, stuff like >>86784194 is a good start in going in the opposite direction

Not really. Disney was an influence after the war in various ways for movie animation, but television animation went in a very different direction and then became the standard. I've never heard of it being influenced by US TV animation. The only thing I've heard is that US TV animation was thought to be low quality, but then again many animators thought the same thing about Japanese TV animation.

Dame Oyaji by Mitsutoshi Furuya, who worked under both Fujio Akatsuka and Osamu Tezuka.

It ran for 12 years (1970 to 1982) in Weekly Shonen Sunday.

From the samples I've seen, the early volumes were basically Akatsuka-style mixed with Go Nagai-tier gore. Crazy shit.

>>86775747
I say in terms of 2d animation, both Japan and the west borrow heavily from each other. West pioneered animation but it grew stale because it kept limiting the medium to cater to only children.

You'll find a good well-rounded cartoon once in a while, but it's such a slow moving industry. However, tons of great anime is being churned out every year.

Anime has done a lot more to diversify, but it's also grown stale from choosing to cater more towards its otaku fan-base.

Similarly comics are stagnating in both Japan and west. Mostly because shonen and capeshit. But I think we're seeing a new era in comics where people heavily influenced by both sides are producing their own stuff now, especially in this age of digital art where comics are so much more accessible.

It's been a very long time since Western animation had any influence to speak of on Japanese animation.

>it's also grown stale from choosing to cater more towards its otaku fan-base.
They make "non-otaku" all the time. Every season. But you people never watch it. "Otaku anime" also isn't a genre or even something that can be clearly defined.

>Similarly comics are stagnating in both Japan and west. Mostly because shonen and capeshit.

I agree with you. I think that's largely because the West is obsessed with maintaining its image of being wholesome and moral, so it can't therefore let animation have more creative freedom, especially since animation is still largely viewed as a medium for children.

So people will have to rely on Japan who is outside the western animation industry to produce new and interesting stuff.

/m/ here,
Why do you fags always feel the need to bring up anime in threads like these? Did you fags get kicked out of /a/ or something?
Contrary to your opinion, there are plenty of quality non-Japanese animations.
If you want to talk about anime, go to /a/.

And don't bring up that bullshit about how anime is just Japanese cartoons. Everyone knows that they are cartoons, but that doesn't mean it's justification to wank about anime in a non-anime thread.
Go to /a/ and try to start a cartoon thread with the justification that cartoons are just western anime.

The difference lies in how Japanese people utilize the medium of animation. The way their culture permeates it.

Anime is cartoons. They both are terms that designate animation. Anime just being shorthand for animation, specifically japanese animation.

If you are trying to categorize things by the definition "vehicle", then yes; a bike and a helicopter are both vehicles. If you want to categorize them by different criteria such as "land/air based vehicles" "fuel-powered vehicles" "smaller/bigger than x vehicles" etc, then yes, you can put them as "different" things. But since the only criteria here are "vehicles" then both fit perfectly in as the same thing.

It's not gory but very psychological. That's what I love about that film.

An evil wizard who is completely divorced from nature becomes obsessed with the old technology from our time and eventually stumbles upon WWII footage and uses that "magic" to totally mindfuck the peaceful elves who never saw such shit in their lives. Left them dead in their tracks because it was so overwhelming.

For us it's nothing because that's the reality we live in but imagine seeing images of the holocaust and dog fights as a grown adult who just chilled smoking weed and doing shrooms in the forest peacefully their whole life- it would fuck you up. Even the sounds of bombs going off and machine guns popping are fucking creepy when you think about it.

This is one case where the author wants to shock the audience, not just gross everybody out, but to help bring a message across. It is often overlooked (because the narrative and pacing of this titles is all over the place) but actually Genocyber has a bit of social commentary aspect to it. Humans are so concerned with creating better soldiers and better weapons and generally making each other lives miserable that basically its no wonder that one day they've managed to develop a sentient angry atom bomb... In this particular infamous scene the kids are not killed by some tenticle monster or alien creep or homicidal robot, but by a simple trigger happy helicopter pilot. Go figure.

That's a exactly what I'm not talking about though. I specifically say that SU is advancing western cartoons into being more like anime because it's being made be people who actually get what's good about anime beyond all that stereotypical stuff. That shit was crap, because it only tried to be 'like anime' on a superficial level, where as SU avoids that entirely and actually tries to bring the strengths of the magical girl genre to American animation.

>>86775747
More or less equal, but in different ways,

Manga and shit: same thing, probably more different styles in the West, although this is partially unfair because you are counting a greater net population and more cultures, of course it's gonna be different. You have to have different discussions about Franco-Belgian Comics, and Italian Comics, and British ones, and Murrican stuff, etc.

Film: probably an edge to Hollywood, but Hollywood has been dominant for years. There is just more money being thrown at the issue and a bigger acting pool to draw from, whereas Japanese production is domestic, smaller audience, etc. That being said Kurosawa is pretty boss, and the Magnificent Seven was so similar to the Seven Samurai that it got the western studio a big fat lawsuit, which they lost.

Lit: smaller pool to draw from, still arguably very good, and I mean big boy, adult novels, not light novels. Light novels are shit paper. I mean like Murakami and stuff.

Sculpture: smaller pool, holds it's own in many cases, I actually really like the pottery they do with gold myself, some of the naturalistic stuff of fishermen and people is really charming and well made.

Architecture: many historical and modern Japanese buildings are functional and aesthetically pleasing to varying degrees. It's kind of subjective really.

I mean, yeah, a lot of it's very nationalistic and/or parochial and sort of focused on Japan, but a lot of stuff every where is. A lot of French people fucking hate everything that's not French, and aren't interested in things outside of France.

I love this new meme that every time there's an argument on 4chan it must be one person doing it alone, because surely that's far more likely than the preposterous idea of people arguing on the internet.

>Muh last word
You said that, not me.

>Then why do you keep trying?
I don't.

>The idea of "winning" this has consumed you.
I already won.

>If you aren't trolling what exactly ave I lost?
I already told you.

>If you weren't being trolled you would have quit a while ago.
You aren't trolling.

Considering its almost quite literally

>No u
>No u
>No, no U
>NO, no u!

At this point, not farfetched to think it's one guy being retarded with himself.

Yes, it's unthinkable that there could be arguments on the internet.
