Mental illnesses can be treated, sometimes cured

Neurological disorders cannot, they are part of who the person is, and no medication can 'normalize' them, trying to find a cure for autism is like trying to find a cure for being stupid or smart, it is just part of who they are and they have to live with it forever
>>
>>86767635
One is a treatable disease the other is a congenital condition. Like catching SARS vs being born without a thumb.
>>
>>86767635

Mental disabilities are more of a learning disorder. Their brain is just the way it is, it's a part of who they are and it can't be changed.

Not all autistic people are as obvious as carl, most people fall into the high functioning aspergers category

They typically have low social skill, appear a bit quirky or eccentric in school, appear distant, are often obsessive with their interests(Christian and his sonic obsession is a class ic example), usually around age 18-20 people with aspergers learn by rote how act normal and go through the motions of being socially acceptable. They don't see the point in most social pleasantries, but they are good at them now, and often learn to read body language very well, though they are still often very blunt and straightforward, and can often appear to be assholes as a result
>>
Also most people that are mentally disabled are fine/happy with themselves. Sure some may fret over it because they know they're different and comparing themselves to others (or having others point out specific differences) will upset them, but once they're out of a situation where they don't have to feel that way anymore and accept themselves along with understanding how other people are then they're fine.

Meanwhile being mentally ill can feel like constant torture, esspecially when you go back and forth in and out of sanity.

Mm, I have mild aspergers, I can't even think of how I would be without it, it is just who I am. Ironically, it made me very charismatic in the long run, I don't quite understand people, but I damn sure know what they like and how to read them, I know what pleasantries to say when to get optimal results, how to make people like me with minimal effort. Every conversation becomes an interesting puzzle to solve,
>>

Allistics don't often realize this but a lot of autism involves sensory issues. It's not just a person acting odd. It's certain textures being upsetting or pleasurable, lights being too bright for you, sounds being overwhelming, certain foods being too unappealing, certain clothes being unwearable.

>>86769265

>>86769111

People don't realize this often but autism is more than just being socially awkward. It involves a lot of physical sensory issues.
>>
>>86769670
That used to be the case, but then the "geniuses" at APA made Asperger's and Autism combined in DSM-5 as ASD. So you can be autistic without sensory issues.

>If I bring it up, people will ask me "why are you so obsessed with Sonic/ Thomas the Tank Engine/FNAF, kek!"
>Worst case, people will stereotype me as Chris Chan or think I'm a latent school shooter.
>Best case, people will pretend I'm some kind of closet genius like Leonardo Da Vinci, but even then that's cringey.
>Normies who don't know me would think I'm a cute awkward weirdo like Michael Cera or Zooey Deschanel.

I wish it was only 4chan that's like this, but it's everywhere. I've overcome a lot of the behaviors that comes with the illness, but I still have trouble working at a decent pace (been fired from jobs because of it) or absorbing information, which makes math that most people can do look like rocket science to me.

Fuck my life.

I plan on getting some therapy to improve it though.
>>
Are there any /co/ characters that are probably literally autistic? I bet Dexter is.

>>86769917

Telling people you're autistic is a death sentence. The only place I see it accepted is Tumblr and that's almost always from people who are also autistic. People treat you like you're slow and like you're a baby.

>>86767014

Arthur actually did a good episode on stuttering lately. This one background character who never talked in 20 years was given a spotlight episode. She doesn't talk because she stutters badly. She goes to therapy to help with it.

Too bad the animation was crap because it's post-s16.

>>
>>86770203
Not him, but yeah. A lot of more severe cases of Aspergers (in other words, the "you can tell just by talking to them" ones) have eating disorders because they're very sensitive about what goes in their mouth. Things like Chicken Strips are very "neutral" in terms of taste, shape, texture, moisture, and anything else that they might have a problem with, which is why they're known for eating them.
>>
>>86770203
Its got some basis yeah.
I can make myself eat more stuff more often than not. My sister describes my diet as that of a middle schooler.
I exercise daily though, so it doesn't affect my health too much.
>>
>>86770138
I have to eat a shit ton, like, 2.5 times what a normal person eats. Don't know if it's a part of the disorder, though. I don't have any other strange food habits, though.

>>86770203
Not him, but, hey now, tendies are legit good, boyo.

I've actually started making my own tendies from my mother's fried chicken recipe. Pricey, but fucking delicious.

My brother has a high functioning aspergers, but I remember some time when he started elementary he refused to eat cheese except on Pizza.

He's 19 and I still can't get him to even eat a mozzarella stick. Though he's enjoying more cheese like items like Parmesan powder.

Feel bad for always giving him shit about it.

Arthur--along with Cyberchase--was always that show I would see on TV at like waiting rooms for a dentist or a doctor.

Or like you would be on at that "one kid's" house who had parents who didn't let him anything on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon so he could only ever watch stuff on PBS.

Excerpt from Komneos
>This video is about the nuance of Jimmy's character in EEnE. On the surface Jimmy looks friendly and unassuming, as represented by him playing with blocks. But there are hints of something darker lurking beneath that facade of childlike innocence, as indicated by the alarming words spelled out by the words. "WRATH," indeed, is something that Jimmy is well-acquainted with, as the events of the video to come demonstrate. Sarah looking into Jimmy's "closet" (visual shorthand for the inner recesses of his mind) offers her a glimpse into what the real Jimmy is like. There is only anger in the closet, curdled and raw from years of Jimmy getting pushed around by others. The grim, blood-stained walls of Jimmy's psyche indicate an intense, and visceral resentment of his peers. Finally, there's the ambiguous fleshy entity on the wall, which Jimmy cryptically calls "God." Sarah refers to the entity as "it," which sounds uncannily similar to the "Id" of the human personality. Jimmy is so forgone in the depths of his misanthropic rage that he 's deified the primal component of his consciousness. He snaps at Sarah for describing the entity in polite terms instead of addressing it for what it really is: the malign rancor that's consumed his soul and is only just barely concealed by a thin veil of normalcy. In the end, Jimmy feeds his Id and his Id feeds him, an unhealthy continuation of the cycle of anger that will one day be his undoing.

>It's certain textures being upsetting or pleasurable, lights being too bright for you, sounds being overwhelming, certain foods being too unappealing, certain clothes being unwearable.
I don't know if I got this part or not.
I can't sleep with anything charging plugged into the socket by my bed because I can hear the electricity, and light and clothes are only a problem when my seasonal allergies act up, and a normally soft cotton shirt feels like sandpaper.

In part 4, while Josuke and friends were trying to stop a serial killer, wasn't he spending a lot of time studying starfish or some shit? And he has never used his Stand's power to stop time in the years between fighting Dio and meeting Josuke, just because "he didn't really NEED to"?

IIRC the stated reason is "it's cheating" or something along those lines.

But the fact that he adhered so hard to an internal set of rules is telling all in itself.

if the other autist is more severe then their own, then often yes

that's the case for myself, I have High Functioning Autism(enough that I can pass for somewhat normal), and I can't stand being around people with mental disabilities that are particularly noticeable(one of my best friends has Asperger's but like with me his is barely noticeable) , but I do feel bad about it(since most of them are nice people even if they are irritating)

>>86770837
depends on their mental state I believe, some are stupid but otherwise mentally adult in most regards, while others stay in a child-like state their whole lives, in which case it'd probably count as sexual assault of some sort

after the last time /co/ did a storytime of The Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck, I became convinced that Scrooge is either High Functioning Autistic or has Asperger Syndrome, a lot of his personality traits line up with having it, especially his inability to understand people outside of matters of money

man I was lucky, despite having Autism myself, I managed to avoid extremely noticeable Special Needs kids for almost my entire K-12 experience(most of the special needs classes I was in instead mostly had it's students be one of the following; 1. kids with relatively minimal issues like mine that were mostly normal, 2. various troublemaker kids, and 3. kids who didn't have English as a first language)

i act like a latent killer because people think i dont hear them when theyre talking about me. when i hear them talking shit at least one of them is looking at me, followed by a snicker. i swear the snicker faggots always blow the cover of the gossip.
>>
>>86777671
you used to be smart. then all those assholes kept telling you everything you said was stupid. over and over again until you just stopped trying to develop your oral speech skills. which then weakened your ability to remember things.

if you had just said "brain dont work good" and never gave us any insight into your thought, you would indeed be as dumb as you think. the fact that you elaborated means you're good enough to make it dude! you have enough creativity for independent thought. people with FAS do not have independent thought (they need help organizing and making decisions).
