I have been reading this series since before they tried to once again incorporate the games into it. It has mostly been great. My thoughts are that this is about the only comic series left that tries its best to stay true to the source material and hasn't allowed a lot of social justice and social pressure to turn it into some circle jerk for some sociopolitical agenda. Sadly it feels like its one of the last good comics left out there. I have pretty much given up on Marvel and DC, but Sonic is still worth buying and reading.

Used to hate them when I first started (though this was right in the middle of the Penders era), but around 175-ish I got back into it and I've liked it since then

Universe is generally better overall imo. Main comic is alright but a lot of the background stories can drag out for wayyy too long, whereas Universe tends to be more bite-sized, and thus feels more immediately satisfying. I can buy one trade from Universe and get a whole arc. I don't feel that way about the Main comic, even if they do smaller sub-arcs.

I imagine it's a better idea for them than the way Sonic did, though. The memories for Sonic and co. were dumb, ended up being pointless, and they didn't allow for any proper reflection upon getting them.

It was basically Sega who wanted things to just go forward because they wanted to tie the games in. The true reason for the reboot is two-fold.

1. The Ken Penders lawsuit debacle
2. Sega decided they wanted the comic to promote the games again.

Because he is the pure form of his concept. He is the TRUE rival character; No sympathetic side to him like Shadow to change that. He is a character precisely designed for one thing and that is to act as a equal challenge to Sonic.

Kaminski it to blame for both decisions. Ian mentioned this on the old +co boards.

I knew at that point that Kaminski was preventing the book to go to better places, not to mention all his other mandates, like keeping stories 4 issue length regardless of how it disrupts the pacing just so that it can neatly fit into the graphic novels, excessive covers, his mishandling with Special Events, as well as bringing in popular mainstream talent even though they would do terribly on a Sonic book. I'm glad he resigned.
