I know you highlighted that he bashed him for being black, but admittedly, Duke is really starting to feel like the most Marvel of DC's current swath of minority characters. Snyder planted his Gary Stu seed before Zero Year IIRC, and beyond losing his parents during End Game, he character is effectively black Jason Todd before Jason cooled off after becoming Red Hood. He has an enormous chip on his shoulder that he points in the direction of anyone who tries to put structure and/or exert authority around him. Yes, perhaps that is because as an African-American his experience with those who exert authority may lead to a defensive reaction towards those who do so, but it does not change the fact that he is still a novice, doesn't have enough training for Batman to be comfortable having him come out to play during NotMM, and that being offered an apprenticeship by Batman should come with a degree of respect that has nothing to do with race. It was annoying when Jason didn't respect him. It was annoying when Damian didn't respect him. It is annoying when Duke doesn't respect him. At this point, the Batfamily is so bloated that anyone who doesn't have their own book getting pushed down our throats is annoying if done the wrong way, and Duke is getting a very conspicuous push, and not in a manner that does him favors.

Or that cave scene with the zombie civvies. They could have written it so that Steph sets up the magic candles while Cass fights a hundred of them at once to keep them at bay, and all of a sudden both characters have something to do instead of one of them just looking while the other solves the problem.

Being ultra good at fighting is one of the most useful things a superhero can have. If a writer can't work it into a story, that writer isn't even trying.
