In tonight's strip, Walky expresses the wishes of most of Big Willy's comment section and Mike is sent to his death.
>>
>>86748524
Some people just don't have eyebrows, anon. Look at Whoopi Goldberg.
>>
>>86748714
this takes place directly after the strip two days ago and has nothing to do with yesterdays

fuck you, willis
>>
>>86748714
Oh look, everyone suddenly hates Mike and wants him to leave. Can't imagine where that came from.
>>
>>86748714
Remember last thread an anon said Walky was the only one who wasn't terrible two strips ago?

There you go. Now everyone is terrible.
>>
>>86748714
You know if Mike dies he is going to have to be canonized on /doag/ like Mary
>>
>>86748714
You can't have him hanging around if literally no one wants him around.

It doesn't make any sense!
>>
>>86748742

well, joyce didnt. i think she got the idea more gradually
>>
>>86748714

>Joyce holding back Mike

Ah, pretty sure it'd be out of character for Mike to just take that.
>>
>>86748757
She mostly didn't get his insults, but I think that time he said hail satan into her phone at her mom was probably the line.
>>
>>86748714
>bringing up the baseball bat
FORESHADOWING
Ryan's gonna get the Louisville Slugger to the head again, I bet.

Y'know, with how Walky is talking about using the baseball bat as a murder weapon, you'd think Willis might realize that Ryan should have died at the party.

>>86748741
Welcome to Willis' ADD pacing. If this were a film, we'd be intercutting all over the place like some kind of Michael Bay joint.

>>86748742
I know you're being sarcastic, but it came from Willis running out of antagonists since he apparently can't think to just either create a new antagonist or bring an older one back from the dead.

Well, "dead" in terms of DoA.

>>86748753
Again, Willis needs an antagonist for this storyline, and Mike is the only one available.

>>86748765
>>86748776
These make me wonder what exactly a person like Mike would be like in real life. Like, I'm a jackass myself, but I'm at least tolerable. One of the Patreon strips had Mike send a picture of his balls to his own parents.

I feel like somebody like Mike is a person who never got attention as a kid unless they were to lash out in outlandish ways, and it became a trait that stuck with them since they didn't know any other way to become noticed. Or something like that; I'm assuming that Willis doesn't think that deeply about Mike's character and just goes "He's always been an asshole. Deal with it."
>>
>>86748776
That was the strip that got me into DoA, actually
>>
>>86748497
She never actually attempted or threatened anything, right?

This is extreme.
>>
>>86748916

people actually read this shit?
>>
>>86748916
She got a hangover and slept in on a Sunday
>>
>>86748916

Nope. She just laid in bed. That was literally it. She never even said "I want to kill myself" or any variation. She broke up with Billie and then just kinda laid in bed.

That's NORMAL after a breakup, isn't it? That's my preferred method of coping with a sad breakup. Spend a little bit of time wallowing in misery and then get up and back to life. Yeah, she's an alcoholic- but this is nuts. She needs AA meetings or something, not a psych hold.
>>
>>86748936
What's worse is there are people who unironically enjoy it.
>>
>>86748714
We have Mike because people sympathized with Mary too much. Next to Rape-man, Mike is the next antagonist of the comic.
>>
>>86748936

They do, Miss Flavisham. I'm so sorry to destroy what little hope you had left and what brief joy you had in this world.
>>
>>86748843

>These make me wonder what exactly a person like Mike would be like in real life.

He wouldn't be. He was conceived and spent his whole run as an extreme over-the-top asshole who could be in bed with two people at the same time in different places as long as it helped fuck with people. His sole "good side" traits come out in response to either liquor or alien invasions, otherwise he juggles between being an asshole to be an asshole, and pointing out harsh truths to his "friends" in a vague attempt to get them to recognize him (while also enjoying fucking with people).

That over-the-top, exaggerated character can't exist in DoA. The premise is too grounded (allegedly) to support him. His character would require some intricate writing to keep him toeing the line between "over-excessive asshole" and "harsh but well-intentioned person/friend".

Much more intricate writing than Willy is capable of providing.
>>
>>86748936

There are people who actually read Assigned Male and defend it as a pillar of transexual activism or whatever.

They're crazy. They're insane. Their minds are warped perhaps beyond all reason and it'd probably be in humanity's best interest when they inevitably realize how the world actually works and end up offing themselves.

>pointing out harsh truths
See, that's what I got from Mike's character when Willis said that Mike represented Willis' repressed desire to say harsh but necessary things to his own friends. But I've barely gotten that at all from his portrayal in DoA.

>His character would require some intricate writing to keep him toeing the line between "over-excessive asshole" and "harsh but well-intentioned person/friend".
Not necessarily. It would require some tact, yes, but you would just have to simplify him. Maybe have him only speak up when he needs to say something.

>>86749088

>>86749100
From what I remember, the idea was that Carla assumed that Ruth was doing okay after being asked to check on her by Billie, but then some other conversation happened in which Carla realized that just because somebody says they're okay, it doesn't mean that they are. After that, Carla barged into Billie's room and used her man-strength to haul Billie's fat Asian ass into the hallway.

Jesus-fucking-Christ I hate this comic.

But I can't look away. God dammit.
>>
Leafing through the comments for the strip before OP, it looks like the sycophants are actually somewhat split on whether they like Mike or not.

Odd, I thought it'd be universal, but there are a decent amount who want more of him.
>>
>>86749494

Related, their recent hate all comes from his comments on Billie fucking Ruth, and it being picking on a "mentally ill/sensitive person" or something.

It reminds me, what was Billie's impetus for being "depressed"? As far as I recall her whole arc was basically:

>Is a bitch former cheerleader
>Bullied by RA then hooks up with RA
>RA turns out suicidal for some reason, so Billie says "Lol I am too"

And that's about where it ends.
>>
>>86748714

Wouldn't Mike and Sarah get along perfectly though? They can talk about how awful everyone else is and how much they hate them.

You know, if I was Willis, this would be the punchline I'd be building up to- have everyone try to keep two hostile, negative people apart, only to fail but then discover that they actually get along fine. Not a gutbuster, but a pretty decent joke all things considered.
>>
>>86749494

>>86749566

Well admittedly, it's a slimy task that I don't undertake often.

He tend to avoid putting the 'designated asshole' characters together. Mike and Sarah and Carla all stay in their different parts of the plot.

>>
>>86749559
Even if Mike did try and wind Sarah up, I would've loved to see Sarah from the start of the strip deal with that. There was a smartness to her dislike of people and a quickness to her wit. Current Sarah might just buckle under the social pressure or something.

Of course, all of that just depends on whether Willis is gearing up for a punchline or a serious moment.

>>
>>86748497
So the meaning of life was pudding all along.

I mean sure this webcomic has its ups and downs, but it was all worth it for this meaningful message.
>>
>>86757539
The doctor is clearly using sugary treats as both a bribe and reward for positive behavior. Willis is setting the stage for a storyline about Ruth putting on a lot of weight and getting fatshamed, possibly revolving around Billie being admonished by the rest of the cast for no longer finding Ruth attractive when fat. Anyone paying attention to the timeline of the strip will note that Ruth would have had to gain multiple pounds a day in order for the chronology to line up.
>>
>>86757539
Actually, given Willis' penchant for bookends, I predict that DoA ends with somebody upper-deckering the women's toilets. All of them.
>>
>>86758060
The truth is even worse: Not only will Ruth get fat, the new weight will drag down on her skeletal structure, resulting in her becoming shorter.

She's going to be another shortstack for Willis' pile.
>>
>>86758148
Nah, Maggie will notice what he's doing and gently call him out so Willis will keep her shortstack design but retain her original legs, turning Ruth into one of those fat people who look like a brick balancing on top of two sticks.
>>
>>86758243
If not that, then I predict Willis goes the Jacques/Marigold route and make her the healthy kind of chubby that doesn't immediately make salad jokes come to mind.
>>
>>86758287
Amber chubby, in which she's unrealistically athletic for her sedentary lifestyle or unrealistically chubby for being so athletic, or Billie chubby, in which she probably has a normal BMI but people act like she's fat anyway?

>patreanon we love you edition
For what? posting this horrible crap early? That's not worth giving money to the creator. These threads just continue to get more brazen in their promotion of this webcomic. I'm on to you, Willis! The only flaw in my theory is that Willis has never shown any sign of having sufficient tolerance for those that disagree with him that he'd be willing to swallow his pride long enough to selfishly promote himself this way. Perhaps it's a legitimate fan of his. That would explain the patreon source.
>>
>>86762102
I mean, Dosbon threads were a legitimate delight in a train wreck. There's no train wreck here. This is full-blown, drawn-out torture-porn. You're not watching dead bodies after an accident has happened, you're watching as a guy slices an inch off an arm and a leg every week for years on end and the person screams in agony each time. This isn't funny. This is creepy. Post the next time he has a "I never masturbated for years because I thought my dead grandma was watching me from heaven" incidents, or a WH40K orcs re-writing of one of his strips, but there's nothing here.

I do. Once, a long time ago, I actually like it. Mainly because I had Christian fundies for neighbors that constantly berated my taste in everything and citing passages of the bible out of context why I should stop, and generally made me feel good that there were others that found such stuff stupid.

Then the comic started getting way too preachy and now I just read it to see how far down it will sink.

I feel like the majority of people in these threads are ex-fans of DoA who, for some reason or another, got turned off by both Willis's devolving quality and his iron grip on his comments section.

We don't like DoA, but we're still invested enough that we can't stop watching as it slowly self-destructs

I started a month or two before Becky got her haircut, and I stopped a little bit after Becky/Dina happened

I think part of the problem is that they banned talking about the comment section so if/when Willis does do something stupid or hypocritical we can't talk about it directly.

Definitely. When I started to question the comic, all I could find were sycophants in the comment section and another board I go to where there's a thread for it.

It's just exhausting to see so much butt-kissing when there's so much room for improvement.

I wanted to like this comic. I started reading it during its first week, but it just slid further and further from something that could be readable.

It was frustrating to not have an outlet to talk about this comic, and it's been so cathartic to see actual literary discussions here.

Not that we could really drum up enough people for an actual raid. At best we'll really only be able to poke and prod and watch while they chimp out.

On the other hand, when I edited the edit warning for Carla's page from "she attracts vandalism because she's trans" to "she attracts vandalism because she's a cunt", they ultimately changed it from "trans" to "possesses an abrasive personality". Which was alright.

I think it's a slam on Sarah turning in her old roommate for smoking weed or something.

>>
>>86773457

>>
>>86773646
If that's the case its worded poorly.
>>
>>86773457
Why is Billie so pissy? Sarah didn't get Ruth ratted out, bringing up the Dana stuff is completely unrelated.

Also the flow of this strip is really weird. Starts with why Sarah is walking with them, then goes to why Walky is taking higher levels of math? I mean, I get that he's feeling insecure, but there's no flow from one subject to the other. Then Billie is bitchy for no reason, as I previously stated. Wraps up with a nothing punchline like usual.

Really pointless strip.

I am wondering why Billie is taking advanced math. I think she's doing journalism, so it would be unnecessary. Sal is probably taking it to prove a point, but we have no idea what her major even is, because why would a university strip ever mention something like that?
>>
>>86773683

>Why is Billie so pissy?

Hey, don't rip on Billie! She's suffering from depression right now despite having no real impetus to do so and very little in the way of symptoms and I guess catching it from Ruth like a cold or something!

is what the fans say
>>
>>86773683
We don't know most of their majors, actually. *Dorothy's poli-sci, I think.
*Joyce is either education or home ec -- something that curveballs into being into a 'good Christian woman'.
*Sarah's pre-law, and Jacob might also be?
*Amber and presumably Danny are in compsci

That's about it. I swear, Willis's character pages are next to useless.

As a math major (in the loosest sense of the word), I feel that the education system should focus more on practical applications for math. Not everyone uses calculus, but everyone can get some use out of, say, learning how to balance a checkbook, or being able to prove that it's statistically unlikely to win the lottery.
>>
>>86773857

It sounds like he actually is trying to give Walkie some character depth beyond smarmy know it all man child by implying that the pressure of being a prodigy is getting to him.

>>
>>86774014

What about Dinotard? I imagine something that can tie in paleontology
>>
>>86774104

Probably geology/bio double major. That's the most common combo for undergrads who want to do paleontology. It's not a concentration most places offer for undergrads- you go into geology and then when you do grad school, you pick a specialization.
>>
>>86774104
i dont think its been specified, but yeah its pretty obvious what shes into
>>
>>86774093
Yes, I do believe they are just now entering the second month of school.

Also, I just realized a way to waste time while analyzing how the days are split up over time. We could actually look to see if classes even could happen during the off-moments in the strips as shown. That is, if the passage of time in the strips over the course of one day could account for unseen time spent in classes.
>>
>>86774093
>Walkie's math should still be easy as fuck.
I took the slightly advanced math I tested into, but by the time I got in the class, I'd forgotten a lot.

By the end of the second week, I was crying and certain I would fail the class if I continued. All the homework was online and didn't explain what you did wrong.

But Walky has access to a tutor and doesn't seem to have any online homework. He has no reason to be wallowing like this.

Even my super-privileged white students in my English 100 class acknowledged they weren't used to working, but the key difference was that they still did the work.

My story ended with me withdrawing from the class for $50 and taking the standard math (with some training wheels of extra classes per week since I no longer had confidence in my math skills) my last semester of undergrad. The class went amazingly well, and I felt a lot more comfortable with math after that.

If Walky is as smart as he thinks he is, he should have withdrawn and waited to take a different math class next semester. Sometimes you gotta cut your losses.
>>
>>86773683
Because she can't be mad at Carla, the one who actually revealed everything.

Now I still believe Carla did the right thing in a shitty way, Ruth would've probably died or something.
>>
>>86774264

What's really sad is that the whole "thinks he's a prodigy but gets crushed in the real world" could have been an interesting story.

Watching him learn he was just a big fish in a small pound, getting torn down and then building back up as someone who can actually study and give a shit?

It's a bit cliche but it's a story. There's character there. He's at least a little sympathetic
>>

>>

Let's be real for a second, Walky is only having trouble with Math because Willis realized half-way through his "Sal is hated because she's 'blacker' than Walky" drama that he had made Sal, the 'darker' twin, a store robbing, teacher fucking, southern sounding idiot while Walky, the 'whiter' one, was naturally good at math and was all around more enjoyable to be around.

>>86774354

>>86775065

Was she going out of her way to interact with Billie, or was she trying to stick with Joyce to look after her?

I dunno what incident this is referring to, specifically, but I imagine it'd be the latter.

>Billie is little more than a selfcentered arrogant bitch; I would hate her too
as soon as you saw her, without ever speaking to her or knowing anything about her? right. what a bitch.

>Was she going out of her way to interact with Billie, or was she trying to stick with Joyce to look after her?
it was the latter, but it was unnecessary and prompted entirely by how much she hated billie and didnt want joyce being friends with her
>>
>>86775148

>as soon as you saw her, without ever speaking to her or knowing anything about her?
Sometimes you can just tell. Besides, did she really start *hating* Billie at that point, or was it just generic "I don't care for people" thing until Billie revealed that she was no good?
>prompted entirely by how much she hated billie and didnt want joyce being friends with her
That's not a valid reason?
>>
>>86775148
>as soon as you saw her, without ever speaking to her or knowing anything about her? right. what a bitch.
The first thing everyone saw of Billie is her being a loudmouth to Ruth, invoking her cheerleader status, challenging Ruth to a fight and getting her ass handed to her.

She made it entirely clear that she's a shithead right off the bat to everyone.
>>

My point (anon with links) was that Billie established herself as a fire-starter, a trouble-maker. She is egotistical and starts crap with people she doesn't know. You see all that in that one attack on Ruth, because Billie is pretty dang smug about it.

Billie isn't necessarily a bad person, and these traits aren't necessarily permanent--that's just what any person could pick up on from that floor meeting.

Not that Anon, but

Sure, it's funny, but it doesn't tie in well at all to Mike's character as presented. Maybe if we ever saw him doing social work on his own, outside of his group of friends so to speak, then it might be plausible.
>>
>>86779944

I guess it depends on how Willy presented it

If it was like, somebody asking

>Hey Willis, what's Mike's major?
>"Social Work"

I could take it as Willy basically going "Doesn't matter and isn't that relevant to the plot, but can you imagine?" Not very grounded/realistic but this comic is half a comedy (the problem being Willy tends to mix comedy and drama poorly or where it's not needed).
>>
>>86780011
Willis seems confused about whether or not his own work is a comedy or a drama.
>>
>>86780011
it's kinda sad that a comic about college kids that's over 6 years old still hasn't hashed out the kids majors or classes outside math and gender studies
>>
>>86780054

It can be both. Hell, IMO the current trend for cartoons and such these days is "primarily comedy, with heavy doses of drama and dramatic subtext".

Willy just doesn't do it right. He employs slapstick to build up a conflict which ends in the UNSPEAKABLE CRIME of misgendering Carla, he ends every potentially-dramatic strip with a shoehorned joke in an effort not to trigger his oversensitive fans, and so on. There's a time and place for everything, but Willy doesn't have the smarts to figure it out.

The insane amount of bullshit needs to inject into his story to have Sal come out ahead of non-shitty people is amazing at times.
>>
>>86774354
I honestly don't think he's realized he made Sal super stereotypical of "dead beat black" types.

That would mean he did something wrong which he is NOT gonna admit
>>
>>86774354
>>86781827
I don't think so. The story of: person does so well at school that they don't need to put in effort, gets to a difficult level where they need to put in effort but they don't know how, person never gets over that and fails, is very common.

It's especially common in college if you're used to daily collected/checked homework in high school that keeps you up to date without having to "study for nothing" and then you get to college and you see all the "recommended" problems and reading and completely ignore them. Which seems entirely like something Walky would do.

The main issue is it's happening in a very compressed period of in-comic time. Right after the review section is a bit fast for Walky to be struggling if he's as good as we're supposed to believe he is. And while we do have the Sal story to compare it to, there's been very little juxtaposition. I think it was just that one quiz where Walky's hair got kinky where Sal is getting a good mark in the same strip, and I guess that one time that Jason reached out to Sal then Walky, but outside of that, Walky's struggles have been about him and his issues, not how he's a fuck up compared to Sal. If that was the case, they'd probably interact with each other about their grades and he'd act immaturely towards her. Maybe that stuff is coming, but there's nothing in the strip to make me think of Sal every time Walky makes a mistake.

Even the most recent strip is going into how his self-image was tied to being a "wiz kid." Willis could tie it to Sal by showing that it's an idea that their parents espoused, but I think that being good at school is something a lot of kids latch on to. As far as we can tell Walky's life was school and cartoons (and maybe fast food), so it makes sense to me.
>>
I feel like Willis should have drafted up multiple storylines for each character based upon three different categories: School and Education; Home and Family; and Friends and Lovers. The latter two are seemingly all that we focus upon, though there could also be room for a fourth category for External or Unexpected Events that aren't directly caused by the previous three categories.

But that would probably be the best way to juggle aspects of an environment as complex as a college campus with an ensemble cast. The stories don't even have to be complex—"Walky isn't doing well in math" is an entirely legitimate story point to draw upon. The fun comes from intertwining the categories together—perhaps follow up on that one scene at the health center between Walky and Dorothy by having her try to patch things up with him while tutoring him in math.

Speaking of which, I just realized that thanks to the bathroom scene from earlier this month, I have a feeling that whole thing at the health center between Walky and Dorothy done got dropped. Or was it Walky and Joyce? Good God, I've forgotten what it was even about. I just know that it happened. Is this what it's like when you have Alzheimer's?

>>
>>86784428
Sorry, I was being sarcastic. Willis just claims he can't edit his buffer every time someone asks him if he changed anything because of the comments.

Thanks for posting it in this thread, though. It's pretty relevant to the mistreatment of suicide in the comic.
>>
>>86782492
Part of the problem is that due to the pacing of both the strip and college School and Education will always be infrequent topic unless it's intertwined with the other two.
>>
>>86786113
True, but it doesn't have to be. Even if sparingly, "School and Education" could stand on its own. Just find a way to separate the friend/family aspect of a situation. Maybe a character gets in trouble at school, and it ends up being a situation that can't be solved with the help of friends or family; the character has to figure this out alone.
>>
>>86787559
You risk running the same issue as the relationships, too much drama in too short of a time happening to too many people. There are also only so many plots you can run with that.
>>
>>86787629
Also true, hence the use of the word "sparingly".
And they don't necessarily have to be dramatic stories. Maybe it could be a character trying to rush to class in under ten minutes after their previous class went into overtime.
>>
>>86787713
That's not really a plot, more of an aside or lead-in. A better idea would be discussion and interactive classes. They're all in an intro Gender Studies class, those almost always have a "lab" that is a small discussion group where actual in-class assignments are done.
>>
>>86788026
That works too. Maybe leave the soapboxing for in-class asides and stories like that.

And even if a story like "X is going to be late to class unless they rush" is barebones, it could still be useful as a means of development. For example, a character like Amber might begin by doing flatland parkour, only to realize she might expose her identity by doing so and thus tries to compromise her athleticism with false normalcy. If Carla were late, she might just barrel through crowds of people, knocking them to the sides as she blasts through the quad on her skates.

Even if it's pointless filler, it could still serve as some kind of development. And if you can find a means of injecting conflict, then it becomes an actual story.
>>
>>86788315
He needs to make new characters, the student cast should be mostly interacting with TAs.
>>
>>86779102

What I wonder about is why it's even an issue with you? Why should what WE do be of any consequence to YOU?

Just hide the thread and go to one with a subject you DO want to talk about. Or if there isn't one, MAKE a thread about it.

It's not that hard.
>>
>>86788736
That would be counter-productive. He's already ignoring at least a third of his established cast as it is; any more would just be overkill.

If Willis were willing to put in the extra effort, he could start going double-time on strips and publishing two every day, each focusing on a different storyline and opening the floor to other characters who otherwise wouldn't be in the spotlight.
>>
>>86779896

Cruelty to the less fortunate is not funny.

He would be fired the first day atany Social Service job. And that's the absolute BEST CASE scenario.
>>
>>86780251
It might not be an issue of smarts as it is an issue of sanity.
>>
>>86788803
Let me rephrase that. He should have repurposed the one-line-a-year dorm fillers into TAs rather than giving us Jason, who as a math TA is the least likely to interact with students, and nothing else.
>>
>>86781584

Oh.

Pardon me

My mistake.
>>
>>86788879
That also works. I still can't care for the tertiary characters. The fact that one is named "Other Rachel" shows how little Willis cares as well.

>>

>>

It's because I enjoy good criticism and I'm stubborn.

I have seen cliche-ridden, plothole-filled, boring, obtuse webcomics with hideous art evolve over time into genuinely engaging and unique stories with solid artwork.

Every once in a while, when a DOA strip will come along that seems a bit better, as if Willis really can take criticism and DOA really will get better eventually, and it reminds me of watching those other comics do the same.

By sheer force of will, I will see DOA become worthy to be placed alongside those others.
>>
So, /co/, who do you think the hottest character in DoA is?
>>
>>86789991
No one invited him, he invited himself. They all hate him but they're too dumb to just tell him to go away. They're not too polite, because they feel fine giving him dirty looks and telling him to not interact with Sarah.

It's basically just bad writing to keep Mike around.
>>
>>86793258
In terms of looks? Billie.

Ugliest character is Pizzaface McDykecut
>>
>>86793258
Sarah
>>
>>86793258
I think it's Sarah, but it varies a lot from outfit to outfit and strip to strip. She looks pretty great in this denim number, but a lot of the time she looks nondescript.

>>86793514

>>
>>86793537
I think one of the most surprising things about his comic is that Willis can draw some pretty great outfits for his characters. Joyce's church ensemble was top-notch.

In tonight's strip, Walky uses the word "potty" while not being a child or talking to a puppy.
>>
>>86794381
See, this is actual plot development. Shit is actually happening here. There's even some use of the comic book panel structure to bring direct attention to Walky standing alone.

Also, seriously, it's a miracle Walky hasn't tripped over his own shoelaces. Rather, it's a miracle he hasn't gotten brain damage from tripping over his own laces in the past.

Other than that, there's not much going on here. There could be an alternative way to render panels two and three without as much empty space, but I don't have anything to mock up a suggestion.

Oh, I would like to have seen a better transition between the fifth and sixth panels, or at least something more logical. It almost seems as if Walky shifts course up the stairs to exit the building.
>>
>>86794381
Walky aside, I like that Sal's been acknowledging Joyce more as a person and not just an annoyance.
>>
>>86794381
>Walky uses the word "potty" while not being a child or talking to a puppy.

Funny how by using "Walky" as a pseudonym, this could also apply to Willis himself, who uses the word potty like a four year old.

>>
>>86794548
I was going to assume he was running after Billie, but then I remembered that Billie was ahead of the group.

So I don't know why he's ditching.
>>
>>86794575
He's ditching because he's been shit at math lately and he can't stand the thought that anyone else in the group might actually find out.

because he's shit at math, and doesn't want to be there. It's a class that's hard and it makes him feel like shit, so he doesn't want to go. However, all of his friends have the exact same math class, apparently, so he has to come up with an excuse as to why he's not going.
>>
>>86794630
>>86794669
Oh, right.
I can't say that I forgot that he sucks at math, but I didn't expect it to actually become a plot point. It seemed like an aside to fill panel space.

Also, if he doesn't want other people to know he's bad at math, why tell Sarah?
>>
>>86794669
>>86794630
But does anybody give a shit? Not even elementary school kids are embarrassed at being bad at math. It's not like being "the smart one" is tied to his identity.

Avoiding lecture probably isn't a good remedy for that, also.
>>
>>86794669
So...that's a pre-law major (who had explicitly taken an easier math class in freshman year), an education major, a social work major, and a journalism major taking what is presumably a calculus class.

I don't know about you, but the only people in my freshman calc class were people in STEM fields
>>
>>86794548
>>86794575
I think he's so anxious about doing bad in math that he's going to skip...

Oh!

Actually, maybe he dropped the course for the easier math class but doesn't want them to know. Now he's rushing over to the other class!

The first option is pretty silly, but was my gut read. It would be dumb and not make any sense, so it could happen in a Willis strip. The second option would explain why he was so defensive about being in "the next level up" and saying "basic math is for shameful embarassments". It's pretty late for a swap, but I imagine he could've through the counselor.

Or maybe he's rushing over to the counselor to get the course switched after hearing Sarah say that she just took her requirement.

Who knows, it's one of those dumb cliffhangers that's very hard to predict because the people in this comic are weird and don't do normal things.

>>
>>86794811
>Such wonderful pacing....
This comic moves so slowly, some of his audience would have found the difficulty of new college classes relatable, several years ago.
>>
>>86793258
billie, absolutely.
>>
>>86794381
Probably because he's self-conscious about his choice to bail right when class is supposed to start. People use weird language when they're lying and/or nervous.
>>
>>86794381
If I was writing this, I would've made this math thing into a Joyce and Walky story. Joyce found out that Walky is failing, and told him to shape up cause she won't be able to keep it a secret or whatever.

Instead:
>Joyce finds out
>Gets Walky alone to talk about something
>Walky dismisses her as usual as if she's dumb
>Joyce says "Sorry, I forgot I'm nothing but a simple, homeschooled, fundie, idiot whose only goal is to be a housewife... but at least I'm not failing math."
>Walky is shocked! Then angry! "So, you're just gonna rub it in, eh? Go ahead!"
>Joyce touches Walky's arm to calm him down, she has a serious look tinged with sadness "Walky, you always treated me like I was useless, some sort of incomplete person... And yeah, I was wrong about some things, but I've learned and grown since then. I'd never want someone else to feel like they're broken when all they need is some guidance. Feeling that way sucks."
>Walky feels like a real dick and apologizes
>Joyce accepts and tells Walky that she's going to tutor him. "I'm very good at math, plus I'm studying education anyway, it'll be good practice for me!" :D

Boom, you've got a new angle for 2 characters to interact on, you get to use Joyce's growth as an analogy, Walky isn't just imploding on his own for strips on end despite Joyce, Mike and Jason knowing about his grades and you even get to work in Joyce's major.
>>
>>86794742
It's a first semester calc class too, Walky would have needed to test into the class as otherwise he'd need a pre-req. It can work if it's not a calculus class but a pre-calculus algebra or trig class and everyone needs two math credits for their core requirements. Of course, that raises the question of why Walky is struggling in basic college math courses.
>>
>>86795354
I'm conflicted, since that would probably result in rehashing yet another old relationship. Literally the only huge difference in this universe besides age gaps is that Joyce and Walky hate each other.

She (Ruth) is a RA who attacked and fell for one of her residents (Billie--real name Jennifer).

She eventually convinces the resident to get into a romantic and sexual relationship. Then she breaks up with her because she's suddenly concerned about her job. And she decides that it's the resident's fault they broke up, despite being the one who initiated the break-up.

The resident asks a total piece of crap (Carla) to keep an eye on the RA. Aforementioned total piece of crap decides that the RA lying in bed and moping means she's suicidal.

People were called, and the RA was sent to the health center because of it. She's not particularly happy about this. Crankypants in this strip is the RA.

Jacob gets a bit more screentime in that scene, but he doesn't talk, so skipping ahead...

He shows up in a strip where Amber immediately starts writing him into gay fanfic as soon as she sees him (damn, we're right. he does exist just to get objectified).

He shows up in another strip where he gets fed up with Sarah being tsundere and ditches her.

There's the whole party scene, where Jacob smartly de-escalates the fight before Raidah gets knocked on her ass again. And then this.

>>86806953

I would love for David Cage to make a video game adaptation of DoA. It would be the best/worst thing ever.

>Long drawn out sequence where Sal is yelling out "Jason!" and ends with her finding his dick.

Are we talking personality swap or everything the same except Joyce is a lesbian? Because if the latter then yes, dear God, yes.

>>86806385
The darker tone he uses for Jacob's upper lip works far better than the peach color he gives Jacob's lower lip.

>>86806705
Dewd, if I had to pick one thing wrong with your comic it'd be your tonal inconsistency. Also you misspelled "shield" in panel four.
>>
>>86806772
That's the point. Because Dorothy is.
>>86806858
Ah, that's what /hyw/ had led me to believe.
>>86807019
>tonal inconsistency
How is the tone inconsistant? It's not really a serious scene at the moment.
>>
>>86806705
That whole 'read from top-right to bottom-left' thing in the last two panels is really fucking with me, Dewd
>>
>>86807019
>Are we talking personality swap or everything the same except Joyce is a lesbian? Because if the latter then yes, dear God, yes.
Just literally Becky in Joyce's position. Becky goes to normal classes with normal people, and we see how her personality develops. And she could even experiment with her roommate (like she did offscreen) and not have the kidnapping plot because there's no reason for her dad to come onto campus. See her almost get raped because a dude is trying to "fix" her and "turn her straight."

I think blending the two stories together would be pretty interesting. And Joyce as a lesbian sounds awesome.
>>
>>86807324
>Joyce as a lesbian
Good luck with that! Joyce only believes in heteronormative awkward semi forced love.
>>
>>86807289
Sorry, I had to keep where the characters were standing consistant.

I could adjust it in panel 3 but I can't really do anything about panel 4.
>>
>>86807376
It would just be really cute to see her fawning over girls and using Ethan as her beard, instead of trying to ~fix~ him.
>>
>>86807190
Fingertips end at the mid-thigh, wrists a little below the waist.

And tonal inconsistency as a whole. Your rape arc starts off non-seriously, then is played straight, ends on a downbeat note, and now you're using it for humor.
>>
>>86807324
>See her almost get raped because a dude is trying to "fix" her and "turn her straight."

That reads more like something out of an AU where Becky stays in Christian college.

>>86807573
>not wanting an AU where Joyce and Dina ruin date night with bickering about evolution
>not wanting Chinmom's Wild Ride

>>86807376
You don't need to be straight to only believe in heteronormative, awkward, semi-forced love.
>>
>>86807630
Yeah, that was what I was kind of worried about, but at the same time I hate being too serious for too long. I mean, Angel isn't really the most smartest girl in the campus, she's... special as you'll see later.

But yeah, I'll try and tone down on the humor a little bit.
>>
>>86807851
It's less a matter of toning down the humor and more about finding the proper way to switch tone. I think in this case the problem is that the first part of the party story was humorous and kept being humorous right until Angel got raped. Such a massive brick wall to the face emotionally needs to be carried through or the drama has no weight. If you want humor out of a rape scenario you pretty much have to go full dead baby with the joke.
>>
>>86808148
Well, I mean, I thought dropping by a little gag here and there without taking away too much from the story would have been ok.

Truth of the matter is I didn't really know how to have Angel say all of this while still being her, because her character is retardedly happy mormon.

Also, what does full dead baby mean?

>this comic is half a comedy

It's all comedy, but most is unintentional.
>>
>>86808655
Oh, nah, I don't think saying I went full LOSS is very appropriate.

LOSS is a strip where the whole comic just goes straight down and will never recover.

I'm pretty sure I'm still floatin'
>>
>>86809089
loss was a full 180 shift in tone that came out of nowhere, was incredibly dark, then, after a few pages, shifted right back to the lighthearted tone.
>>
>>86808579
Dead baby humor.

How do you fit twenty babies in a bowl? A blender.

How do you get them out? Potato chips.

As for Angel, if you're not wanting to play for tragedy or dark humor you're kinda past the point of no return. With the strips that show how she reacts mentally to negative stimuli you're probably going to want to make her behavior unsettling.
>>
>>86809114
Yeah, and I gradually built up to those dark pages, it's not like something out of nowhere, we all knew that Tyler was a rapist and stuff, and it didn't go fully dark.
>>
>>86809089
For your comic to go downhill would imply it was ever good.
>>
>>86809249
>you're probably going to want to make her behavior unsettling.
Yeah, I think subconsiously that's what I was going for, but thanks for helping me out with really figuring it out.
>>
>>86749154

Is carla the one from this comic or the one from questionable content?
>>
>>86809336
For unsettling to work you need to think about how your characters react so you don't telegraph to the audience how they should feel. You need to keep that uneasy, no-idea-what-to-do-or-say atmosphere, at least initially.
>>
What would /doag/ say to me maybe doing some vocaroos of headcanon voices for a few characters?
>>
>>86809485
QC has Claire, who is mostly space filler when not being the author's mouthpiece. You probably got confused because they both have red hair and when Jeph accidentally gives her a personality Claire is kind of a dick.
>>
>>86809503
Yeah, I'll have the characters act weirded out.
>>
>>86809523
I could try out some voices for the dudes, me and my friends would read DoA to make fun of it.

I'm asking for a friend.

All he can write are the exact same characters through four separate comics?

This guy really IS a creatively bankrupt hack
>>
>>86805000

Blacks guys can only date black women?

Willis is a racist.
>>
>>86810220
I believe it's at least six, though DoA is technically its own universe. I think Roomies is actually connected to It's Walky in some odd manner; I'm unsure if that's how it works or if Roomies is its own universe.
>>
>>86806534

No, it really wasn't. Not at all.
>>
>>86775032
Oh my god, Becky has always done this shit?
>>
>>86809523
>>86809704
I'd listen to it.

>>86809631
Claire's more 'extroverted nerd' than jerk

>>86810065
Willis is happy to ignore the laws of physics for the sake of a joke or shilling a character.

Here's 4 of them. Personally, the other three are the shittier ones, so you're not missing out on much.

>>86810220
There's actually a lot of artistic merit in putting the same characters in a variety of situations. Willis is just too much of a hack to take advantage of that merit
>>
>>86805257
Do people really do laundry in their underwear while in public? I've never seen anyone in either of my colleges do that?
>>
>>86810362

Even Jim Davis could create Garfield AND U.S. Acres
>>
>>86810393
Jeph Jacques has two comics going on: Questionable Content and Alice Grove. One updates less frequently than the other, but the point still stands.

Willis has gone nigh on twenty years with the same exact cast of characters.
>>
>>86810376
You're going to need to be more specific

>>86810255
I think Raidah's Indian? Or a very dark middle eastern?

>>86810390
I've never heard of anyone actually doing that, but I know it's a popular sexy scenario, like the whole 'cooking while wearing an apron and nothing else' thing

>>86811654
Do we really need to make a new thread before patreanon shows up?
>>
>>86811601
Well, yeah. It's the natural order on college to only do laundry when you're literally out of all other clothes.

But it's usually not a sexy thing.
