Season 2 was definitely worse than season 1, but the finale works amazingly (if you pretend season 3 doesn't exist)

At the end of season 1 Barry was too scared and selfish to save his mum and right the timeline and save the six million jews killed in the particle explosion

After being told he fucked up by the speed force, literally sacrificing his life, getting the girl, and saving the entire multiverse at the end of season 2 he sacrifices everything he's ever known and everything he could have had to fix Thawne's interference in the timeline and right what went wrong at the beginning of the series.

This collapses the entire CW Flash timeline and ends the show.

Take it like this. Civil War in comics was a large spanning problem over several dozen issues that was very convoluted and ridiculous. The MCU turned it into a much lower key but still solid exploration of the idea using the cast they had.

Flashpoint is a ridiculous time-shenaniganza elseworld where fuck what you know, etc. etc. used to create a new status quo. The show doesn't have the same toys to play with so they focus on Barry specifically. This was his idea and he alone understands the consequences. By making it more intimate they can hone in on the impact it has on him.

Both are obvious cashins of recognition, naturally. Sure, I wish it had more longstanding repercussions and development. But a good angle they used was not overexpositing the changes that are present. For instance, Joe's a mess because he never had Barry to fill that void in his life.
