>Warren Ellis will return to DC, to work on some of the characters that made him a household name among comic book fans, as the curator of a new "pop-up" imprint called WildStorm, ComicBook.com has learned exclusively.

>Following on the heels of the success of Gerard Way's Young Animal imprint, WildStorm will take a similar approach, with Ellis writing the "main" book and curating the others.

>WildStorm will debut mid-February 2017 with a regular monthly comic titled The Wild Storm, written by Ellis with art by Jon Davis-Hunt (Vertigo’s Clean Room). This ongoing series will reset the known WildStorm universe and introduce new iterations of WildStorm characters such as Grifter, Voodoo, The Engineer, Jenny Sparks and others.

Image-tier delays included?
>>
>"After long reflection, I couldn't turn down the invitation to renovate the house that Jim Lee built, and refit its unique combination of cosmic paranoia and paramilitary conspiracy for the post-political space madness of the twenty-teens,” said Ellis. “Looking back to look forward."

>THE WILD STORM will serve as a launching pad for several future series: Michael Cray, WildC.A.T.S. and Zealot. No creative team announcements have yet been made for those books.

>“There are precious few visionaries in our business and fewer still like Warren who can elevate mythos with both stylistic panache and idiosyncratic spectacle. His work at WildStorm remains the tone which best defines and reflects the WildStorm Universe,” said DC Publisher Jim Lee. “I know I speak for WildStorm fans the world over when I say I can’t wait to see what Warren and Jon have in store for fans in February!”

>More information on the new imprint will be revealed on the “Meet the Publishers” panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 8 from 4pm-5pm Eastern Time.

So is this going back to a separate universe?

Remember when DC tried to fold Wildstorm and Vertigo into the mainline DCU? Good times.

They still are. Midnighter and Apollo are in the man DCU. I bet this'll be like Young Animals were its mainline DCU but neither will reference each other much. Like early Swamp Thing having MMH showing up that one time

So, like, what's the appeal of WildStorm?

Pretty much, yeah. DC realized the Wildstorm characters didn't fit their mainline universe.

Young Animal is the Vertigo Rebirth - where it's a mature imprint that uses niche DC properties in ways that hover on the edge of cannon. Vertigo itself is going to be their straight creator owned material.

Should be like Young Animal where it's part of DC but it exists on the fringe and they largely interact with their own set. They'd probably get Midnighter and Apollo to show up every now and then, since those two have managed to make the jump to mainline DC.

Marvel doesn't want good writers. They pay writers substantially less than artists. They want good art.

There was a survey done that showed that Marvel paid a lot more for art than writing, while DC did the opposite.

That's why I said it needs to be something specific because that doesn't sound like editorial is to blame for him writing bad stories though. Rebirth is more serviceable than post Crisis DCU of late 80s/early 90s. This will give us some great runs like that period did, other stuff will be forgotten. Now DC has experimental shit with Young Animals and those minis, hipster shit for vertigofags and WS Rebirth for 90s nostalgiafags. It's too early to say if it ends up being the best period everrrr but it certainly is the most diversified.

Wildstorm actually kept DC afloat and had some of the best writers in the business working on it (and spawning some of the best writers and artists we currently have now).

It's easy to dismiss a lot of early Wildstorm stuff as "edgy" but it was really novel at the time, they brought in a lot of new ideas and helped boost Image.

People like Jim Lee, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis made Wildstorm what it was.

Hanna Barbers is a cute idea but not very experimental. Vertigo is just creator owned stuff nowadays and YA barely started. Do you really think these three imprints can compete with classic Vertigo alone? And then there's the titles I mentioned that are main line DC.

Hawksmoor has always been one of my favorite and at times my #1 favorite super hero. Have you guys read the story where they reveal his origins weren't alien? That he was given powers from the City Gods in future, where Earth is one big city? That was some of the coolest, most imaganitve writing I've seen in comics.

He's super underrated for sure.

New 52 fucked up Stormwatch by making it the Authority vs Ayy Lmaos! instead of what they were, Stormwatch being the UN and world governments official super hero team and the Authority being this anti-establishment group that mainly defended the Earth and it's various multiverse incarnations.

Elaborating on what I said here >>86737909 since it's probably not going to happen now and you other Anon's will get what I'm talking about...

Part of BIG IDEA was the return of Henry Bendix in the DC universe. With his ability to travel the muliverse and how he gives himself everyone's super powers, making him a big threat to the whole DC universe.

khouri is ok, he is too "I know everything about art" and that sucks. Marvel got some good from DC like Will Moss.
>>
>>86738883

Listen to his Fatman Interview with Kevin Smith.

He's a legitimately smart guy who went to Princeton University with the aim of medicl school, then he said "Screw it, I'm doing comic books." He spent years learning how to draw, got on the X-men when they blew up huge, and jumped ship to Image. He got out of the Image bubble before it imploded and sold off Wildstorm to DC. This was somewhat scummy since he promised to stay independent, but he escaped much of the market crash.

Then he managed to get into the old DC office despite being on the West Coast and everyone hating Image babies at DC.

He's a very good businessman who happens to draw comics.

You mean when he was at Image, or when he was at DC (where he moved the majority of his attention more to DC projects like Hush and All Star Batman instead of Wildstorm)?

Cause at Image it seemed like sales dipped in the late 90's pre-DC buyout, but he also had the Cliffhanger line, which were at the top of the charts (until Madureira and Campbell had massive delays between issues).

First time, they basically had no organization, got bit too fast, and didn't deliver books on time. The market hit retardedly high prices and crashed.

Wildstorm basically died out of lack of interest at DC. Jim Lee leaving meant it was a directionless pile of 90's IP's no one other than dedicated fans knew about.

Pretty sure DC's officially stated policy is that they don't accept pitches that include DC-owned characters.

Which makes no sense to me, I mean why the fuck would they not want pitches for a DC comic to include DC characters? But that's what I read.

Daemonites were and are underrated as fuck. That's why I am talking about DC fucking it up because the Daemonites have so much pontential as villains for everyone and they didn't do shit with them.

You have to think in terms of brand and marketing too. Helspont is an easily portable villain for use in other animated adaptions and shows and games and all of that. They dun goofed by getting rid of him, if they do.
>>
>>86743415
>>86743946

>>86744606

>uncreative

Fuck you.

My entire goddamn philosophy for writing is "DO WHAT HAS NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE" or at least take a new and original twist on what's been done before. Break new ground, even if it's with old and underused ideas.

The whole thing with Henry Bendix is to take this villain who actually has a great backstory and write them up to the point of being a legitimate threat and fun character for the rest of the universe.

Bendix coming into the DC universe causes a stealth event named "Evil Rising" which means EVERYONE gets a revamped rogues gallery. More villains, more threats, more stories, more conflicts. It all starts with his tampering of the multiverse with the Weavers.

I see Bendix as being underused and underappreciated. The DC universe needs a villain fluff so it's not just about Luthor and Joker all the time.

95% of what Marvel and DC publish is unreadable trash and it has been that way since the "golden age." Late 80s DC was one of the few eras where more than five percent was good.
