The last cartoon I watched was Invader Zim too.

I guess it would be just like that episode of the Planet Jackers or Tak where Zim steps up to save the day because he doesn't want another alien to destroy Earth.

The movie pretty much implied The Thing had assimilated other alien forms before going to Earth. Assimilating the Gems wouldn't be a problem to it.
