Hard to judge the season as a whole as of yet.
The first episode was incredibly dull and was mostly just setup but the second episode was probably some of the funniest Modern South Park has gotten.

The third episode is alright, a couple of jokes landed but most of the interest comes from wondering where the hell the plot is gonna go. Thing is though, I'm not sure why would you have any remote hype when the previous two seasons have proved Matt and Trey can't write an ending to save their lives.

I guess my hope is that Heidi turns out to be an evil and vindictive bitch, a female counterpart to Cartman, as a way to not only give her some actual personality but to see how Cartman would function if he were to meet his equal.

Butters had a reasonable point.

If the interviews are anything to go by Trey and Matt really do seem to be the types to resent their past decisions. They fucking hate old South Park and a bunch of characters like Mephisto and Pip were dropped because they didn't like them.

I hope they do play it straight, but I can't see them having Cartman be reformed forever. It would totally be like them to have an entire season where Cartman is the only person that isn't the bad guy and where all his past faults were exposed as being just naivety or stupidity but they are going to return him to normal by the end somehow.

I will say this though, for the first time in South Park of all fucking things, I don't think it would be funny for them to resolve Cartman's story by just dumping on him. Like, I can see them doing it, but I just don't think it would be funny. It would just be mean.

Last season did end on a joke, regardless of whether or not you personally found it funny, same with the movie.

They blend the two together, but undeniably more so on the comedy part. Even Seth Mcfarlene as you brought up attempts it in his series just to keep things from being too flat. But this isnt a character driven drama, it's a formerly episodic comedy trying a hand at a continuous plot over a season. Yup, that's pretty much the gist of it. Compared with Season 19, where each episode generally covered a singular theme and it was more of that a part of each episode stuck around to make a full story, Season 20 seems to be taking the more standard approach of making a singular story and fitting it's themes in wherever serves the story the most.

Which I, so far, don't like. It's not as impressive, it makes a lot of dull moments because the story comes before the satire, and you have to watch the whole series for any episodes to really make sense.
