That's the short version.

The long version is, that Disney had a great relationship with Hasbro when it came to boys toys (Marvel Avengers, Star Wars, etc), but Mattel had dominance within the girl toy market, which is why Disney had the Disney Princess line with Mattel. Then, Mattel faced problems within that market. Not with the Princess line, mind you, which was going strong thanks to the Frozen princesses, but with their own top franchise, Barbie. At almost the same time, Hasbro found great success with MLP, proving that they, too, could handle a girl franchise. Their research had shown that girls aren't actually into clothes, but loved the idea of a brand that embraced friendship and kindness. That led to Disney taking a chance on Hasbro by giving them the Descendants license, which proved successful. Around that time, the Disney Princess license at Mattel was up for renewal. So, Disney decided to pull their Princess line from Mattel, and hand it to Hasbro, with the intent of them making the princesses more into heroines than damsels. Some people think the fact that Mattel launched Ever After High had something to do with that decision, but the truth is that would not have made any difference.

So, having lost their Disney Princess license, Mattel is left with two major doll franchises: Barbie, and Monster High. Technically, there is also American Girl, a huge sell that is being redeveloped right now, but it's a bit of a different animal than the others, so for simplicity's sake, I'm going to ignore it.

Now, here's the interesting part: At the beginning of 2016, it was revealed that Monster High dolls are actually cannibalizing Barbie. Fitting, considering the theme, but if you are trying to revitalize your main franchise, you don't want one of your other franchises disrupting that.

All these things come together in Mattel's ne strategy. Revitalise the Barbie brand by introducing a diversified platform of different bodytypes, Introducing DC Super Hero Girls as heroine characters, with a focus on friendship and kindness. Making the EAH "power princesses". And, finally, rebooting Monster High, which serves the dual purpose of changing the focus to female friendship instead of dating and clothes (by removing most of the male cast), AND reducing its market presence, thereby allowing the other new toylines to properly develop, instead of being crippled right out of the gate by the titan that's Monster High.

Frankie in Ghouls Rule is still one of my top favorite looks

I mean toywise, MH has a lot more variety

I don't know much about the rest of the series or the toyline, but Welcome to Monster High was a very pleasant surprise. The designs are much more appealing than the 2D flash version or the actual dolls. They remind me of a less ugly version of Star Wars Clone Wars.

In Monster High, everyone is treated as something special, not having something "normal" to have to scale to.

In ever After High, there are freaks, but their are humans to show a powerscale that goes in favors to the "monsters" of the school.

This one looks like it was supposed to be the first of this chapter. I really like this one, especially Ramona and Cerise. With them and Briar and Faybelle it is really interesting to get some new protagonist/antagonist dynamics in the show aside from Apple and Raven. Some of the villains do want to follow their story and not all the heroines are as crazy about it as Apple is. It's interesting to see how that shapes their relationship.

Also, going to reform school puts Ramona near the top of the list for potentially being lesbian, I have seen enough exploitation films to know

I will admit, it took me a while to warm up to Apple White, just because the notion of repressing who you are to go along with what society says you ought to be…yeah, not a fan. And that’s a big part of Apple’s characterisation - she likes the role society’s set out for her, and she has trouble understanding that other people don’t, or taking that seriously and not just treating it as childish or selfish that other people don’t want to ruin their whole lives so that the select few get their happy endings (seriously, Raven’s future as shown in the Storybook of Legends involves homelessness and imprisonment in the show and utter corruption of the soul in the books). She gets better as time goes on, though, and I got to like her. And that’s sort of the key to why I like this pairing. These two are on absolute extremes of the main political difference in their society, but they’re still close as anything, and over time they come to see the merit in one another’s opinions. Raven learns to see that there are consequences to her choosing to step out of her role, and Apple begins to see that, actually, there are consequences just as bad to blindly obeying the rules of one’s story. And they drive each other mad, and they have petty fights, but they still more or less get along. Even when the drama between the Royal and Rebel factions is at its height, these two generally try to prevent things from escalating further, and though their fights tend to be a bit more serious than just factional conflict, they’re usually either resolved quickly or don’t mean the complete collapse of their friendship, even if things are tense for a while.

I just think that Apple is kind of a sham as a character. She is doing all the stuff she does to preserve the statue quo but we have already seen that it's too late for that. So she is like a person who's still rooted in a past era when everyone else gets it's the 21th century except her. I like Dexter better as a person because he is more himself while Apple is all about putting up a front that's really not herself. I feel sad for Apple more than anything else but I still don't like her. And I think she doesn't deserve Raven until she can actually accept herself like being able to wear her glasses in public.

How exactly is she a sham? The only thing about herself that she hides is her glasses but aside from that she's a pretty open book. She likes the path destiny set for her and was determined to make it a reality when she heard people say she might not be able to become queen because her hair wasn't like her mother's. That was her choice and in doing so became book smart. She also never forced her opinions on anyone. She wanted Raven to follow their story but she never resorted to lies and tricks like Grimm, she wanted Raven to see her point of view on her own.
