This scene scared the shit out of me as a kid. This was those kids end-game, they never got a happy ending, no saving, no redemption, nothing. That's a fucked up way to go, especially when you know how brutal salt mines were. I've been temporarily paralyzed before, so the thought of losing control of ones body and being reduced to a stranger, more uncomfortable form just reminds me of that incident. That was practically traumatizing.

I think the Coachman was just in it for the money, and probably hated kids, thus I assume he got a slight smug satisfaction out of getting them out of town.
