Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. Mind you these are not the only problems with the OVA, but I don't want to just list the problems here, that helps nobody.

The real problem with it, the problem all problems stem from, is actually endemic to what happened in the second season as well. Namely: it lacks focus.

The OVA is divided into three chunks of story. So it seems to have something of a basic three- act structure, it's supposed to have a beginning, a middle and the end.

Only these things don't connect to each other at all and it's because they're trying to cram sooo much stuff into every part that it just becomes messy. The first episode, the opening premise to a story supposedly, has a new Nox knock-off who is supposed to challenge Yugo as a nemesis and at face value it could work. He's charming, but serious, he has a nation to rule so he has to make tough decisions and he's in love with Amalia. So in theory he should be a perfect foil to Yugo. Only they don't capitalize on those things at all, the entire plan of the Count is revealed to be cartoonishly stupid, his part in the story is cut short, his love for Amalia ends up a plot point going nowhere.

Then you have what amount to a long fight scene between characters we don't even really know. Sure, some of us watched the Kerubim's Emporium (or whatever it was called in English), but to a whole lot of us the whole sequence was confusing. Who is Atch? Who is Kerubim? What is Jorris doing there and why are they calling him "dad", what the hell is going on here? What's an Ecaflip Dimension? In fact what's an Ecaflip, should I know ANY of this? And then they throw in Remington into the mix.Just because I think, to this day I do not understand what his role in that episode was.

And then you have the finale. The god damned finale, in which they attempt to adddress the issue of Ogest's Chaos, the most hyped up aspect of Dofus Mythos and something of a lingering threat that existed on the scale of a natural disaster, by... Reducing it to a shonen fight. Oh, and Dally is a god now. Even thought that makes asbolutely no sense, but hey, we needed somebody to match Yougo's power level in that scene and somebody needed to lose something for the sake of cheap drama. We already killed of Tristepin once, it worked, so we might as well take his arm this time. It's sure to work great.

It reeeaaally didn't. That entire episode made no sense. The Shushu's are entirely trivialized in an epic genocide where the heroes literally NUKE THEIR HOME PLANE. Goultard's character is trivialized and literally becomes a punchline to a joke he made at the end of season two. Adamai and Yugo's relationship is trivialized because, again, we need cheap drama. EVERYTHING they could trivialize, they do. Every bridge they could burn down, they do. It's an absolute train-wreck of story-telling.

So in the end what you have are three episodes. Each one of them has some cool ideas, great animation and interesting (potentially) characters and themes but none of them connect to each other. In all the chaos of plots, ideas they try to introduce to connect to everything thus far they just lose any semblance of focus.

And you know what's worst? Even in all that chaos of plots and ideas they STILL fail to resolve the ONE THING they start with, which is the romance of Yugo and Amalia. How is it gonna be resolved? What's the status quo for now? What's the possible outcomes and conflicts we can expect for the sake of the story? We don't know, it's left entirely unaddressed.

Oh, and fuck them for sidelining Cleophe. Sure, she turned out to be a disappointment in the end, but she was still a huge part of season two. For her story to end in a lousy cameo at the wedding scene, without a single line of spoken dialogue is just... Disgraceful.

I don't hate the OVAs but they demonstrate some serious weaknesses in the show's storytelling.
They didn't know what to do with the story so they just escalated the power levels and hoped it would compensate.

Yugo/Amalia I was ok with. It's annoying that development of that happened off screen and in a comic, but I wasn't about to be up in arms opposed to it.
Yugo being a prick about it though is was less forgivable. The whole plot with the Count felt super rushed, like there coulda been a good story, but they were in a rush to fight everything they wanted into that 1 episode so Yugo starts accusing the Count before he did anything wrong and the Count turns almost pure evil at the next most convenient plot twist.
There's 6 Primordial Dofus that are ridiculously powerful but more weaker ones scattered throughout.

All in all, I agree that the OVAs were kinda a mess. The first one was just awkwardly poorly paced, the second one was an excuse to have a crossover with Dofus stuff, and the third reminded me of Pokemon 2000 with a buncha mindless monsters all having a stupidly flashy fight for way too long. I'm glad Tristepin lost his god powers though, and Yugos ridiculous power boost was also temporary so season 3 has a good chance of redeeming itself.

As someone who has seen both, the english dubbing is a non issue because the french version is there all well and good. The new subs aren't that bad either. A couple changed jokes, but a lot of really weird little translations were fixed up. For example, Goultard using the nickname Papoine had no meaning in english. It was just a weirdly untranslated word to english that only barely paid off in the end line of him saying "papa" before going. I actually liked the translation of Goultard calling him Daddio to the end line Daddy. It wasn't word for word, but made more sense. Along side other stuff like "All that has happened has happened before" really is just more accurately translated to "history is repeating itself"

We see him grow normally until he hits twelve, we see him as an adult in flashbacks...so why did they decide to stunt him at twelve? It's literally never brought up before.

I could understand wanting to make his dynamic with Amalia more difficult, but shit, she's a sadida princess and he's some weird minorly divine king with wings on his head. I don't think that relationship needs more tension.

I think everything that should be said about why the OVAs don't work, has been said already.

The big problem is a complete lack of focus. Ever since season 1 ended it seems the creators completely lost the ability to tell a somewhat linear story. It goes on without any changes until it suddenly changes in scope at one point. There is no natural escalation to what's going on. Couple that with a tendency of throwing in new plots that weren't even alluded to previously and you have one awful mish-mash of a story.

Each singular elements in Wakfu work, it's just that when you put them together they don't even seem to connect.

Season 1 was great because it had a natural progression of events, it had a good begining, a solid middle ending with and epic mid-season finale and the straight run towards the ending was paced great, was tensed and ended with a satisfying pay-off.

In contrast both season two and the OVA seem to have a good beginning, a meaty middle and a strong finale, but these parts don't seem connected to each other. For example season 1 starts with re-introduction and Resurrection of Tristepin to get the Brotherhood back together. Then it suddenly, out of nowhere, turns into a twist where the antagonist is Quilby and the stakes are the sake of the world. And then it ends with a steam-punk-ish battle of mechs against demons as a back-drop to our protagonist fighting the bad guys. These parts are connected by loose filler and half-baked plotlines. Like take that side plot with Ombrage being lost in the chaos of Rubilaxia falling apart. In the aftermath she often appears in the background, leading up to somewhere. Except it leads nowhere, the entire plot is just scrapped and doesn't resolve at all. What was the purpose of it? And then you have Cleophe, which has the same problem. She's nothing more than a plot device to entertain us between the end of Rubilaxia arc and the finale. And the same basic problems exist in the OVAs.

Wakfu's world is full of magic stuff, and they're basically half dragons so...
My guess is that it'll be explained later. Or at least, that's the plan. But it will be bigger than just a 'mc doesn't age' trait.
Or it's just that their puberty lasts several hundred years.
It's never been brought up before because he's the only Heliatrope we 'know' (as in, Quilby is a special case, and we only know so little about him)
But it didn't bother me at all. But maybe that's because I find Amalia/ss super fucking hot.

The end game is Amalia becoming a goddess of hips and ass herself.

I liked the OVAs on my first watch, and still can't get to dislike them that much even now.
What bothers me the most is how they butchered Harebourg's character to make him into a standard villain with stalking a 13 year old girl as his hobby, and how the fights went in the second OVA (mosy notably Joris becoming weak as hell for no reason). Yugo not growing up is bothersome but they didn't have much choice because of France 3 so I can forgive them.

I didn't have much problems with Tristepin being a god (reincarnation isn't new in this universe) and I'll be happy as long as he doesn't get it back for a while at least, same with Yugo and the Dofus. The Ogrest fight was over the top, but it was pretty good and they defeated him without winning the battle which is a good decision fro the writing team considering the Gods had given up on beating him already.
The saving grace of the OVAs for me are the animation, OST and the setup for new arcs (Brotherhood of the Forgotten)

It wasn't sudden, if you read the manga they are all over each other. I don't remember if season 1-2 had any signs of affection, but they probably did. Plus he saved her kingdom and like the entire world before, and is an immortal god king, so its normal for Amalia to have a crush on him.

That and the entire escaflip dimension was fucking stupid, the wings on his head ridiculous and inspite of how fucked up the the end boss was he was still only mid boss level in importance.

The shu shu being trivialized to that level really hurt their importance and the world. Hell it should have been played up and treated as some great terrible place and the final battle with the shu shu king some kind of holy shit the world might be destroyed level thing.

If you can't make the audience care about the specacle then you just have a very boring magic show where anyone who's still paying attention is simply sitting back and picking it apart.

Season 2 turns that around a bit. The first 3 episodes basically star her. Percy and Yugo inevitably end up getting the biggest starring roles though and Eva ends up mostly just piggybacking on Percy's importance. It's one of my biggest gripes with the series is that they could do so much more with all their characters but give Percedal most of the non Yugo screen time.

Wakfu has great animation and some interesting ideas but the story is lousy as all fuck.

Season 2 was lousy at story. Wakfu Season 1 on its own was pretty good, at least in my opinion.

Season one was great. The pacing was top notch and the story was progressing lineary from one point to the next in a sensible way. Characters were utilized well and their development didn't leave me wanting. Everything worked great.

Then suddenly in season two they just lost their ability to tell a story, apparently.

I think they wanted more over the top fight scenes like the final battle of season 1, and sacrificed a lot of the heart and pacing of season 1 to try and fit in more awesome moments. Some of the call-backs felt nice and had some endearing moments but it was far too little compared to the bad pacing and some of the more ridiculous story points.

Honestly I'd have loved to see each season follow a new set of characters rather than driving one cast completely into the dirt.

From what i understand, france3 told ankama to make season 2 half filler/oneshot stuff, so Ankama isn't totally to be blamed for it all of s2's faults.

Different story with ova which had much less influence from france3.

Their problem is or has always been is that they flat out suck at foresight and they're trying to jam in too many lore elements into their wakfu.

The ultimate problem with the OVAs:

It tries to interconnect the manga (budding subtle romance between Amalia and Yugo), some various comics (Remington and Ush's deal and past), the game and specials (Ogrest and Frostboy) as well as a couple previously unexplained elements that are explained in the Dofus film (Acham and Kerub's resurrection, Joris' role as a father to them).

Basically like all of Ankama's forms of media is involved. You have to be caught up on everything to understand most of it.

That would be super cool to do, but i imagine it being a struggle to come up with new characters each season and i think ankama isn't exactly great when it comes to character variety.

Theres nothing inherently wrong with filler.
They have such a huge, expansive world to immerse us in I can almost see it as necessity at times.

The problem is that it didn't build up to a satisfying conclusion. Definitely needed a bit more direction.

I still fucking loved it, I wasn't really disappointed. I just enjoy the world.

Technically, the majority of season 1 was filler as well. The difference is that it was the kind of filler that allowed for character development and it was always made clear that the climax is coming. In between the filler episodes we got those with Yugo and Adamai and short moments with No to keep foreshadowing that, yes, in fact the end IS coming.

In season two we get one big twist in the middle of the season with Adamai visiting the remnants of Eliatrope ship, Quilby flips out and that's it. We don;t hear from any of them for the next 10+ episodes. It doesn't help that you can't further develop characters that are already clearly established. So all we got was, well, comedy. somewhat sub-par comedy, unless you're crazy into french humor.

Souls tend to go towards parents of the class they were in life. This isn't the rule and you can change gods/appearance before you hit puberty which looks in your appearance. It's a clean slate for the soul and they don't remember their past lives. There are some special cases, but these people are demigods or Qibly.

The subs impact is a minimal blip at best and I'd argue they're even better in a lot of regards, but the dub is a serious problem. It's actively chasing people away from the series if anything. People find it on netflix and english is on by default with no mention that it was originally french. They're greeted by voice work that sounds right out of a videogame from the late 90s and speed racer esque rushing to say all their lines because the script wasn't changed to fit the time frames they have to say eveything in. I'm not picky on dubs and watch most things dub, but this crossed the quality line into unwatchable. Even just technical aspects were messed up like how the battle grunts are way too loud and put over the music or how characters like Adamai when they transform keep their same voice when the original had filters or something applied to it to make it match his giant new form.
