I wonder what Wakeman was thinking when she made the first XJ robots. Were they always intended to fight monsters and stuff? I doubt it because she made a literal baby. I guess each was built to perfect a different technology so that she could combine all those features into XJ9?

It's confirmed that they are protoypes. She was probably trying to get the AI right. XJ1 was probably a test to make a sentient robot, while XJ2 was a sentient robot with basic weaponry, and so forth.
