I rationalize that away by telling myself that Jor el being bred to be scientist granted him the ability to override his programming which explains why he is the only one able to understand why genetic engineering stagnated and killed off the kryptonians. This. I think some people assumed Kylo was going to be another Darth Vader and when their assumption was proven wrong, they went into full butthurt. Kylo is a moody scrub who wants to be an evil Sith Lord but still feels normal human impulses to do good, and struggles to suppress them.
