It basically shits on the ending of the book though, which suggests they are both going to at least get a little better by realizing that they have to work actively to stay in a relationship instead of vanishing because they dont like some stupid shit. They literally battle their own demons. Having no reference to Scott would be basically retconning the book. Even if she fails at staying with him, her failure should cast a shadow over anything else romantic she does.
