In the early FF comics he would use it, at the time it was a superscience ray gun that allowed for a more specific sci-fi type effect than an actual firearm.
These days he's rarely depicted as carrying it because his armor is basically an IronMan suit that lets him shoot laser-rays from his fingertips.
