This is correct. Rhode was out on some mission in Asia (possibly also undercover as well) and Tony went to go help him out. It was dumb.

Why was taking down this particular ninja syndicate so important? He never did anything like this for Hydra, AIM or the Hand.

No I know he went undercover in Asia for ninja reasons my point is nothing was furthered in that plot because of the faking of his death. I believe they even acknowledged it at the end of that arc, that they basically wasted their time.
It frustrates me that the majority of Bendis's Tony Stark Iron Man run was wasted on this plot that I know little to nothing about and that changed very little. Now I'm supposed to care about the fallout from those stories even though the reasons for the actions to be taken are unclear, silly, and unjustified. I like the idea of Tony's new lady being upset by his lifestyle and the selfish decisions he makes regarding it but it's just not earned. If I can't remember what happened and why in 10 issues of comics equating to over $20 of books there's s problem.

I know I'm not alone in thinking this but it just frustrates me how blatantly he didn't try with the "tech ninja/fake death arc"

Ok, from what I remember, he didnt actually fake his death. He just disappeared. But he did so right after his building was blown up by the inhumans. Everyone just assumed he was dead. And he dissipated because he was undercover as a washed out shield agent trying to go traitor, as going as Tony Stark isnt very under-covery. He intended just to be out of the spotlight but the board of his company had him declared dead so they could take over as no one had heard from him for weeks (months)?

All right I do remember that, thanks for the help (although the whole affair seemed like an exercise in futility on Tony's part considering the results). I'm in the same boat as one of the worst fans of anything, the ones who buy and read regardless of if they like it. Foolish. I do have hopes for iron doom and iron heart though because I'm a Marvel shill
