how would you describe this show?
>>
Pretty good but not groundbreaking outside of its willingness to be a contained story, something western cartoons could really use more of

a nice imaginative romp that may remind you of the adventures you had as a kid, if you had any.
>>
Very immersive pastoral atmosphere with fun characters. Simple and straightforward story but told excellently. 9/10 would watch every Halloween.

It's a miniseries, but it watches more like a movie imo.

The whole feel of it gives me the vibe that it's a movie I've seen a very long time ago that I just forgotten about. And the art looks like it's from one of those really old picture books with the gold spines for kids.

If it wasn't for a few moments of modern cartoon humor seeping in, I'd find myself asking what year it was made.

NIGHTMARE FUEL
in a good way
>>
>>86137331
The Beast was wearing people down until they gave up and died and became the eidelwood trees, then directing the Woodsman to chop them up for him to fuel the lantern. The Woodsman didn't know what was going on.
>>
>>86131855
A god damned piece of pure bliss
>>
>>86137618
I know where you're coming from about the art, but I think it applies more to the backgrounds and some of the mannerisms. The character art itself looks pretty modern.

The books are called Little Golden Books, in case you were wondering
>>
>>86137331
The beast sucked all their hope and turned them into trees but it'd implied that he couldn't actually kill them, that was the woodsman job, that's why the folks at the tavern feared the woodsman and told wirl he was the best because he had the lantern.
The beast is pretty much treated as having no actual capacity to harm, except in the first episode wich was wierd but rather survives though the fear and lies he spreads the only thing I don't understand is why he wanted to hold the lantern

>>
>>86131855
Hans Christian Andersen writes Alice in Wonderland
>>
>>86137772
It's art, real art is timeless and so is over the garden wall, that confusion over not being able to pin down anything in the show was intended, when the characters are confused so are you when they are afraid so are you, the woods are scary yet you aren't constantly scared.
It exists only to tell a story like the art style is inspired on those timeless tales so is the plot.
It could have easily been another story in one of those ancient books
>>
>>86137860
And that makes it so great because the thing we should fear the most is ourselves l, how many lonely years did the beast Rob the woodsman of? How many people did he turn into trees? How could there be anything more terrifying than a creature that feeds from our fears and loss of hope? A creature that needs to eat us from the inside to survive?
>>
>>86137860
Fear is always there and so is the beast
>>
>>86131855
Charming, well put together. Enjoyable as a simple watch but has some depth to it if you look. It loosely parallels Dante's Inferno, and Wirt's name references the word 'wyrd.' Soundtrack is great.

>>86137331
He's been using the oil shit from the trees, which are shown to be people at the end of the series.

Through opera, if I had the means.

>>
>>86138233
It's actually a story made from scrapping together other stories that's the point of the unknown, we get told that old forgotten stories get revealed to those who travel the unknown and no matter how much you think about it there is no better explanation of it, it certainly wasn't purgatory since some of the stories where completely fictional but our rules don't apply there
>>
>>86131855
10/10 soundtrack, not even joking, but that might just be my love for Americana

Anyways, the noses take a bit of getting used to, but it was a nice story. It doesn't explain everything (which is nice, if you disagree, think of midi-chlorians), and has wonderfully written characters, straight up feels like a classic Grimm tale.

It's a little bit of a morality plot, but it's not ham fisted. Really makes you nostalgic for childhood.

10 or 11 episodes, just watch it.

Just rewatched it, actually. It is probably the best cartoon I've seen in awhile. It has a great metaphor on dealing with existential depression, too. Like, fuck, if you're mentally ill, you're damned. Like, I'd be lost for five minutes before turning into a tree.

Magical.
One of the few modern cartoons that did a classic kids go on an adventure in an unknown land story really well. You could tell it was made for kids and adults and not in a cheap "Throw in a dirty joke the youngins won't get" way.
All the characters were really well written and you could understand why they ticked. Evil, good, romance, loss, like the rest of you said, just a rare piece of Americana.
It has a comic series where they put the unused parts of the story, you should check that out too.

And >>86138286 is right the music is outstanding.
>>

i mean it was weirdness in a western format. not something readily accepted. it was pulled off, the music wasnt pushy and it had an odd interesting story line that was well wrapped up. good characters that made you care about them

Great. Ending was a little soft but with cartoon network what are you gonna do? Also its not everyday where the journey is far better then the destination.
>>
>>86131855
Around the 7th episode I started crying like a baby and continued until the 10th ep.
And I've watched it like three times. I cry every. Fucking. Time.
>>
the narrative and characterization were excellent; however, what stood out as exclusively commercial and what ought to be contrary to the willingness here to call it the show "art," was the way in which the art itself, the typical cartoon network animation of the characters, didn't match the thematics or even the detailed and shadowy backgrounds of the show at all. the callbacks to 1930s animation, the folk music, the frame narrative, and the way the epic narrative was structured unlike most alice in wonderland, pan's labyrinth, coraline-type movies, along the lines of spirited away, all were really great. the animation though really undercuts everything that's good about it for me. cn should do more series like that for sure though, all the original adventure time people should have their own shows.

.

Would like for someone to take a stab at using flash to to stylize something like a paper doll look or something someday.
>>
>>86142789
It's just the usual animation style you are used to see in cartoons, it doesn't really match everything even tho I love their designs.
It's still just a cartoon special and it still had to look welcoming and somewhat harmless

I'd say that it's a pretty comfortable unlife.

When the Woodsman finds Greg, doesn't he specifically say "I didn't know where the trees came from"?

also
>son
It was his daughter.
>>
>>86141859
I was a little disappointed when the woodsman got his daughter back. For some reason I felt she should have stayed dead and the last shot of him was just some lonely old man who was trying to move on with his life.
>>
Over the Garden Wall is a cartoon miniseries starring two brothers, Wirt and Gregory, who find themselves in a mysterious wood called The Unknown. Blending spookiness, comedy, mystery, and a really good soundtrack, Over the Garden Wall has something for everyone.

Join Greg and Wirt as they meet a cast of bizarre characters including a bird, a kleptomaniac horse, a wandering woodsman, a people eater, a heartbroken schoolteacher, and a monstrous horrifying shadowy Beast. Gasp in awe as the intense conclusion is randomly interrupted with a trippy dream sequence and then a flashback.

Get the DVD on Amazon for ten bucks. Worth it.
