Would a show based on TF2 work?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

maybe as a 10 minute show on Adult Swim.
>>
>>86117415
SFM is clunky and slow, and Valve still acts like five guys in a garage with a work ethic to match, so no.
>>
What would the plot even be? TF2 is a class based shooter.

Making a cartoon off of GTA would be easier. Fuck, making an Overwatch cartoon would be easier mainly because they aren't fighting recolors of themselves.
>>
also, how about left 4 dead? Just curious.
>>
>>86117415
As a kid's show, with a normal cartoon runtime? MAYBE. A lot of the humor would wind up getting wasted because they couldn't put a lot of the great jokes in, plus people couldn't die in it. Like, at all.

However, like >>86117447 said, it'd do pretty well on Adult Swim, even with a full run time. It might even do okay on Comedy Central, based on how well Futurama and South Park do (granted, they'd be totally different shows). I could a TF2 show doing especially well on the Toonami block, since then it could have a balance of seriousness and comedy, the way it is in the games.

What kinda stuff would go in the intro to the show?
>>
>>86117415
Probably. The comic is great and that SFM pilot they did was pretty funny.

>>86117477
You're thinking too hard about this. It doesn't matter if it makes sense, as long as it's funny people will accept it.

They were going to, Valve and Adult Swim had agreed to one. However Valve couldn't keep to Adult Swim's schedule so the idea was abandoned. The one idea for a short was made into Expiration Date.

Each class is it's own character. Have you not seen any of the shorts?

There's a comic, too.
>>
>>86117415
You'd have to explain how the hell there's two teams of the exact same nine people. All eighteen characters dying each episode could at least be explained through nonexistent continuity, or some kind of ass-pull like Merasmus's "kill-me-come-back-stronger" pills.
>>

this is really interesting, never heard this.
>>
>>86117600
Really? I didn't know that.
>>
It would get two episodes, then go on an indefinite hiatus.
>>
>>86117477
Well, it'd have to be a lot more like the comic at first. Fighting robots, and maybe even just doing missions against the robots at first. THEN they could bring in the TFC guys for an arc or two, followed finally by Gray Mann (one of the only people who could really work as a good villain, beyond maybe the Administrator) cloning them or some shit.
>>
>>86117633
Still mad about Half-life?
>>
>>86117477
there are enough comics to flesh out a world and general story.

>back in the old west days, an industrialist left his two undeserving sons a bunch of useless land, and gave his industrial empire over to the Hale family.
>his sons start fighting each other over the land.
>they hire mercenaries
>they both hire the Engineer to build machines to keep them alive well past the point of dying of old age.
>it is now this 1960s era.
>still fighting with mercs over the land
>buying all their weapons from Saxton Hale. Who is now the head of the company left by the brother's father, to the Hales.
>every mercenary has little bit of background story to expand upon. like Soldier is this American. who flies him self to europe to fight in ww2. but it was already years after ww2.
>then there is the third brother and his army of robots.

I-I'm not a furry, AND I've only ever played TF2 as far as Valve stuff. I still play once in a while, but they fucking League of Lame-ified everything about game selection and shit so they could play catch-up with Overwatch. Which REALLY sucks for me, because one of my favorite things about TF2 in the first place was all the goofy fan-made maps people had on non-Valve servers

>>
>>86117415
Adult Swim tried, but they couldn't handle Valve time.
They wanted at least 6 episodes in 22 minutes format. Instead we got expiration date.
>>

>>
>>86118115

>>

They botched the story in my opinion.
I think even they realised it, seeing how it takes one year to create an issue that was supposed to be released bi-monthly.
Pauling being gay is just another great show of Valve's sloppy work ethic, which consists of "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand does".
>>
>>86117609
to be fair the shorts also posit the idea of them fighting recolors of themselves as well, sometimes there's even several Soldiers on one team. . But on the bright side the world lends itself to shit like clones and robots.

http://www.polygon.com/gaming/2012/6/22/3110808/valve-teams-up-with-adult-swim-for-team-fortress-2-mystery-project

It seems as if the Pyro short might have been testing the waters to see if they could take the concept further. From what I've gleamed they aired the Pyro short, but nothing else. It seems odd if that were t be the only testing done, and if they were pursuing something, it would be more reasonable to air a block of the Meet the Team shorts instead of one.

Honestly, Valve seems to have really dropped the ball with Team Fortress. I just hope that Blizzard makes Valve take an extra look at what they can do with TF2.
>>
>>86118995
They are clones, both red and blue soldiers and also engineer I think are called by the same name in different comics. Also there are like a dozen soldiers dying in Meet the Medic.
>>
>>86117468
>and Valve still acts like five guys in a garage with a work ethic to match
>still

Anon, you're implying things aren't going exactly according to design. Valve has a radical "absolutely no rules or bosses, not even Gay Ben will tell you what to do, do whatever the flying fuck you want" corporate layout that's purposefully engineered so that they can act like a bunch of guys dicking around in a garage for the rest of their lives. When they do put out shit, it's because they, as in everybody working on the project, they personally want to put it out. So usually the quality level is pretty high. But if they're not, like, feeling it today dude, then nothing will ever get done, and they're completely fine with that.
>>
>>86117617
But that's not what the lore is like at all

Red team has 9 characters that never die, blue team can exist of as many characters as is needed for the episode, and can be killed to fit the plot.

In any case valve has certainly worked out for him, he's one of the 1000 richest people in the world, with a personal fortune of billions.

I like Uncle Dane but that video pissed me off from the wrong information it gave and people regurgitating without doing their own research.

Hidden Path helped Valve make the game but once they released the game, Valve replaced them in LITERAL months. They barely did shit with comp, it was all Valve.

>>86119695
>Plus, I had a ton of cool servers saved in my favorites and can't find them now
That's probably because they're all gone. The MvM update killed community servers. The previous system would funnel newbies and veterans looking for a quick game into community servers, which both increased the player count, encouraging more people to join and keeping the server alive, while also introducing new people to the community who might decide to stick around and be valued server players. Now, the new system keeps newbies and veterans looking for a quick game into exclusively valve servers for the matchmaking bullshit. People have to go out of their way to look for community servers now, which most people won't do. Which means that community servers are quickly dying off as they just can't keep players on them and members of the community quit and weren't replaced.
>>
>>86119632
I meant femscout. Scout's design isn't meant to be the prettiest boy on the block, it's supposed to be an average twenty-something with a rough upbringing. Femscout wasn't created as scout's dedicated waifu, she's a genderbent version of the scout. Yes, obviously her design looks fucking similar to his.

Your comment on his mom is retarded, yes, she's his mom, they share physical similarities. She doesn't look like him in drag, she looks like his mother.

People get fired at Valve. It's rare, but it happens if someone really fucks up or, more likely, does absolutely nothing.

Valve had more money then they could do with and they all decided that "Hey, what if we invest all of our money on VR, and all we got to do is get 80% of everyone who works here to invest all their time and efforts?" and everyone went for it.

To give you a basic idea of how many people worked on VR, the TF2 comic was delayed because both the writer and artist decided to work on VR for a bit.

Clone wars was a bit for the older crowds, but I'm sure this would be too. But they could just bypass that by making them fight mostly robot clones. But ultimately the loss is still the lack of cartoony gore which isn't going over even if you can get them to okay killing tons of characters, most the deaths in clone wars were 1. clean 2. with laser weapons. So having a kids show that has people get blown into gibs with machine guns and baseball bats isn't going to fly in a kids show. But why do we want a kids show, we can just have an adult show.

Valve both encourages people to go outside their box and they also simply don't hire completely specialized people who will only do one job. In their words they want "T shaped people", people who are particularly good at one thing but can do a bunch of other things as well. It shows in the credits of their games- since they want people to mix jobs whenever possible, nobody's actually listed under any job, it's just a long list of names of people at valve.

The bowl-like walking pads are rather janky, because they aren't actually integrated into any games as far as I know. All it does is that when you walk forward, it presses a virtual "W" key. It doesn't adjust for speed or watch for each individual footstep or anything like that, which would most likely make it feel terrible.

Because no games have been designed for it, since they're all hobby-made prototypes.

Imagine if someone made something technologically similar to the vive in their garage, but no software had been designed for it. Yea, it'd be worthless for the most part.

This stuff should have reached a higher point back when arcades were still a real thing, then both the software and hardware would have been able to be developed and be profitable. It would eventually have come into home use, just as lightguns did.
>>
>>86120878
Overwatch would work because it was written to be a movie/series in the first place, and they made the game instead.

That's why it has so much lore and shit that ABSOLUTELY doesn't matter to the game.

TF2 hasn't been relevant since 2008, it literally does not matter anymore in the real world and the only people (if you can even call them people) that for some inexplicable reason STILL do care about that game are steam slaves that have to farm virtual doodads for pennies while they try to keep their parents from kicking them out of the house for being wastes of human space.

Hardly.

Overwatch will be abandoned once this console generation cycles out. They'll add the characters they want and then that'll be it outside some balance tweaks. They can't keep pumping new characters into the game, where it's easier for TF2 to get new weapons. Even if they don't add new weapons that often.

Overwatch just can't have the staying power with the way they've set it up.
>>
>>86121125
I've read the Overwatch lore.
It's not that great. Tf2 lore is somehow more interesting and as you mentioned >>86122513 it's mostly made up on the spot and rarely take itself seriously.

I guess this is due to the fact Overwatch tries to take itself far more seriously but a lot of the lore aspects just aren't very well written while TF2 occasionally has hey're dramatic moments it always put comedy first and the universe and world they live in reflect said comedy.

They have two writers (of that I am aware of: Erik Wolpaw & Jay Pinkerton), and they didn't communicate their ideas well enough among each other. Two people and having two different ideas how to approach and didn't even talked about it before they put it into practice, resulting in the writing mess that we have now and that apparently takes one fucking year to talk it out.

Recipe for success right? It would've been somewhat funny, if it was not the case in almost every department at Valve, which can at times get very frustrating.

Dota 2, three years ago, and unsurprisingly it's still highly popular.

They released The Lab just some months ago, but it's more of a bundle of Valve-made VR-based minigames.
>>
>>86127817
Technically, it's all IceFrog.
>>
>>86127204
They're art if they use the medium specific enough.

Fallout 1 is arguably art, as an example. The synergy between player choice and the narrative is far more artistic than exploring some lesbian's home, or a boring, on rails shooter that's TOTALLY INTENTIONALLY on rails, written by a guy who didn't actually understand what he made the core of his game's story about. Those two were hailed as the Citizen Kane of gaming, and released in the same year.

So yeah, games can be art. But the regression into pretentious "WE'RE TOTALLY ARTISTIC" bullshit fostered by social justice bullies and AAA developers is hurting the amount of games which fall into that category.
>>
>>86127817
Didn't they just throw money at icefrog and co to make that?
>>
>>86128055
I wasn't completely serious, and yeah, I think it depends on the game, and who's playing it.

Kojima once referred to video games as more of a museum than specifically art in and of itself, and while I can see where he comes from, I don't necessarily agree with it, but it's regarding what kind of game it is.

Tower of Heaven and ICO are two games that are very different, but to me they're very much alike and they are two games I'd consider art. The gameplay is still there, and it's never put in second place behind anything else, but the rest of the game makes it a whole other type of experience than, say, Overwatch.

Also, what's the second of the two you were referring two? I can't seem to get which game you're talking about.

As long as they can do the characters well I'd watch it, but it depends on what network it airs on.

If it airs on Cartoon Network, it would feel a tad bit weaker. Allot of Tf2's humor comes from mixing seriousness with insanity, because the characters take the world their in seriously despite how over the top it can be.

If it airs on Toonami, then sure. It would be great because they can have action, but also have Tf2's trademark comedy. Albeit Valve would need to hire writers that can do it well.

TF2's lore doesn't outright contradict the game, and they even have events based on stuff released from the comics like Mann Vs. Machine. you're all forgetting the interview issue where Ms Pauling mentions the blue team and the administrator just says fuck it and use what they already had (thus, meet the team trailers), if the blus were just clones why would they bother with interviewing them at all?

The explanation is simple, the TF2 video game exists inside the comic universe as a game, during the catching up comic Saxton Hale refers to it as a "dramatization", since its a game, the idea of both teams sharing the same models make sense, and as far as we know the similiarities between the team members in the comics (i think the interview comic showed both teams IIRC) could just be a coincidence or just a funny fact that is never adressed, like someone who looks exactly like you and came from the same country but from a different place

How? The story invame is RED vs. BLU but rarely in supplementary material do you see them interact

The characters are very broad and kinda vague tropes shaped into people shapes, people have been throwing headcannons and jokes, exploiting quotes, and we got what sticked.
some are kneeslappers, while most others are forced and annoying.

Does anyone actually play TF2 anymore? Last time I opened the game they introduced that new matchmaking update, and based on my experience, it's virtually unplayable.

Did they get rid of it, or did people just put up with it?
>>

They fixed most, emphasis on most, of the issues.
>>

They changed it, added map selection, fixed the wait times etc.

>How? The story invame is RED vs. BLU but rarely in supplementary material do you see them interact
Most of the story doesn't have to do with stuff within the game itself outside of the occasional events, but that's because the lore focuses on side-stuff outside of the RED vs. BLU conflict. Multiples of one character on teams can easily be handwaved by some crazy explanation like they're all clones or convenient lookalikes since the franchise is largely comedic and outlandish in nature (or even just ignore it and lampshade it for jokes). Overwatch on the other hand doesn't have that benefit since the story is supposed to be taken at face value.
>>
>>86132302
Probably less gameplay and more character interactions and general style. It's a cartoony, over the top gorefest and the characters are all sadistic psychos who would probably shoot eachother without the money incentive.

It doesn't need to have a plot, like some trailers for certain updates and many SFM shorts; it could be basically the latter, with ridiculous over the top episodic plots too, the only difference would be actual dialogue.
>>
>>86117415
I feel like only MvM would really work unless Blu and Red have faceless mooks in addition to the 9 classes. Otherwise, since each class is a character, you'd have to explain respawns or lose characters really fast.
>>

I know.
If the show was real and focused more on action, the mercs would obviously use teamwork and outsmart the robots. Or brute strength it like in actual MvM.
My point is that regardless of direction, I'd really enjoy a tf2 show whether it be action or comedy.
And that video is God-tier, SFM is a bitch to use and I was hype when the second one finally came out.

Seems like transplanting brains is a step too far, even for Medic.

Nah, he just hasn't figured out how to do it.

Yet.

After all, your brain ages just as your body does.
After several transplants you'd eventually be a vegetable in a perfectly healthy body.
