There was definitely a time at which it seemed reasonable to root for Karkat as your favourite character.

I'm convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that somewhere around 2011 or so, Hussie had a plan for Karkat which would have had a huge, exciting and dramatic, satisfying payoff. All the clues he littered the comic with; the mysterious red blood which he shared in common with the cherubs, and the fact that his place on the horoscope should have rightly made him one of the missing limebloods, which he ALSO shared with the cherubs. Him getting that limbeblood text colour whilst shooshing Gamzee into complacency. The fact that like a cherub his god tier which we'd sometimes see in the dreambubbles had no wings. The fact that Lord English as Caliborn initially used grey text like Karkat's. The fact that the blood aspect was never explored... it all pointed to some GIANT revelation about his origins, his place in the universe, his connection to the Big Bad.

And I think at some point Hussie just lost interest in that plot thread and said "Fuck it, let's just do something simple and straightforward. This is too much work."

I think that at the time when the story was being seeded with all these clues about Karkat, rooting for him made a lot of sense. But as it turned out, it all amounted to literally nothing and he wound up having no plot significance whatsoever after Act 5.

It's a good idea to have an idea where you're going, but you need to remain flexible about the execution. Stephen King did the same with his Dark Tower novels; he had his ending in mind right from the outset and at a certain point he seemed to realize how frustratingly unsatisfying it would be, but kept at it anyway. Just before the final scene of the final book there's this text:

"Should you go on, you will surely be disappointed, perhaps even heartbroken. I have only one key left on my belt, but all it opens is that final door, the one marked [nonsense alien language]. What's beyond it won't improve your love-life, grow hair on your bald spot or add five years to your natural span (not even five minutes). There is no such thing as a happy ending. I never met a single one equal to "once upon a time." Endings are heartless. Ending is just another word for goodbye."

And then went ahead with the terrible ending of the story which he'd conceived of long before he conceived of most of the characters who we'd gotten to know along the way and who had seen their stories ending in the previous chapter, since this ending was dreamed up when he only had the one character in mind, and so that's all that it concerned. It was an exercise in aggravation, but like many "artistes," he'd long since committed himself to it emotionally and went ahead with it anyway because that's what was emotionally satisfying to him.

And the thing I find, whenever an author does this, is that they're so concerned about what works for them, what's emotionally satisfying to them, that they don't take into consideration what will be satisfying to the audience who have had a different journey with these characters than the author has, and we don't care about that great idea you had ten years ago as much as we care about the characters we got invested in along the way.

Andrew should have held off and maybe made Hivebent a whole prequel to homestuck, where we could see how a 'normal' sburb session is supposed to play out rather than what happened with the betas.

Roxy isn't a Mary Sue. Mary Sues break the rules of a work's story/causality/character interactions/general storytelling without any explanation and they ultimately shatter your suspension of disbelief.

Roxy is just one of those characters who are funny and competent enough to make great secondary characters, but too shallow and too weak character development-wise to justify their odd main protagonist status. Like John.

There would be no reason otherwise, alt callie just needed to bop LE on the head. He also brought back vriska for no other reason than to ferry the juju to LE. and right at the last moment, like, the same month as the end, we are told that space means lonliness and makes people hard to find. this is one of the retrocausal fuckups of classpects, because sure, jade was lonely on the island, but other than that it has no purpose other than to give alt callie a reason to be hidden from a fucking lord of time

Being shy isn't irrelevant either. You don't get to pick and choose which flaws are legitimate and which are not. A Mary Sue is a flawless self-insert. If the character has flaws, she isn't a Mary Sue. If the character resembles how an actual human being could behave, it's not a Mary Sue. There is nothing about Roxy that makes her character unrealistically perfect.

She's not particularly smart, which is brought up by the narrative multiple times, but no one even mentions it because of how all-around believable she is.

Let me elaborate on my definition because I don't really want to argue. Sues come in many forms but the general consensus is that they share one trait; narrative idealization. They may have flaws but they'll be ignored by characters, they may do something wrong but everyone will try to rationalize it, a Sue can do something seemingly stupid but it'll always turn out to be right etc, etc. It comes in many forms.

A Sue can be a hapless loser but if things constantly go their way for no reason and they get cattered to because it's still a self-insert with narrative bias. It doesn't have to be a self-insert though.

I don't want to prove you wrong, I just want you to understand where I'm coming from.

well first of all the first two "Parts" have different main characters with different powers (SUN PUNCHING POWERS) that aren't stands

the first part is a mildly ridiculous but fairly standard good vs. evil thing with a guy and his adopted brother that became a vampire and also is a very entertaining asshole

the second part is also good vs evil but with more ridiculous shit going on and a LOT more fun of a main character

basically the first two seasons are filled with crazy fun power fights and characters but people know part 3 because it introduced Stands and began experimenting with them

also stand names being musical is because araki always names things after music stuff. before part 3 we had the Zeppeli family named after Led Zeppelin. The Cars, ACDC, and Wham were all bands used to name the villains of part 2. Hell, there's someone in Part 3 literally named VANILLA ICE. So at a certain point after the tarot cards, stands can be reasonably named after songs or bands or whatever.

jojo's appeal is hard to explain, it's just a lot of fun and the characters are fun. it's bizarre in a way that's completely different from homestuck, but in a lot of ways it ticks off the same sort of things a homestuck fan might like, i guess? i don't know, i'd just say give it a look for yourself.
