The thing about Cloverfield was that it was trying to be another Blair Witch Project and blend the line of reality and fiction. The issue with that was scale: Blair Witch was an independant film in the middle of buttfuck nowhere about an urban legend that's so similar to real urban legends that it may as well have been an actual story. Only three characters were present and it was largely unscripted leading to the actors being able to do more with less. The characters were no-named actors who'd only ever been in unknown products or played bit parts before. If three people go missing in the woods that's normal fair for any location in America and wouldn't be covered by any major news source.

Cloverfield expanded the field too far, attempting to show us something we knew wasn't real and never would be real. All the main characters are major actors and the setting is New York City, money was used and tossed out like condoms in an orgy, and the attempts at CGI look far worse than any dope in a rubber suit.

Whether you like either film is your own opinion, but I don't like either. However, I do respect The Blair Witch project for being the one to popularize the setting of found footage films (even if it wasn't the first) and putting the internet hype machine to good use. Cloverfield was overhyped and dull, it made missteps and wasn't even all that scary.
