Does anyone have a copy of Garth Ennis' The Demon paperback that was recently released? Does it use glossy paper like a regular trade or is it using the newspaper stock type of paper that Deathstroke and New Teen Titans uses?

Yesterday I ordered:
Preacher 5

Wonder what order I'll end up reading them in.

I blind buy (almost) everything, and that only arrived 2 days ago, so I have yet to read it.

Also, Moench did fantastically with the Moon Knight I've read, so I can't imagine it'll be terrible.

The steven universe comics were fun and had some decent art in them, I wouldn't recommend if you're someone who enjoys the lore more than the characters. Thank you kind sir, here's your reward

>>86038340

I bought that same statue off of Amiami for like 6500 Yen (which, at the exchange rate was like, less than $60 at the time), and then it was clearanced for a long time at like, 5000 Yen because it wasn't selling.

Even the highly-sought ones like Yuri and Milla don't go for what you paid for Asbel if you watch import sites or even eBay usually.

The newer ones are starting to get more expensive, (Like for instances Ludger and Julius from Xillia 2 are about $100-ish but the price of everything in Japan is going up because of the back and forth of the Yen).

But that's not a $190 figure.

>>
>>86038472
Well I'm telling you, that's what I paid.
I originally planned to get it off amiami but I found it at the con in April so I went for it.

Must be because of taxes in that case, because i got this at a discount, while Ludger cost 200+ dollars.
>>
>>86038472
>>86038971
Besides, how did you get it so cheap?

Even though it's sold out the price is still 8k yen, that's what it's been for more than a year now.
>>
>>86038971
Buying things like that at a con is a rip-off, generally. Don't feel too bad, you paid $50-70 more than everyone else but as long as you have positive memories to associate with it, it doesn't matter so much.

I'm just telling you for future reference, mang. Where do you live then? I suppose if you're AU or something that's not bad, but since you're putting US Amazon prices, those are way over what they should be.

>Besides, how did you get it so cheap?
>Even though it's sold out the price is still 8k yen, that's what it's been for more than a year now.

Well, I preordered it.

Also, Japanese sites tend to give a pretty big discount, and then the shrink the discount right around and after release. Originally, Asbel was only like, 6800 Yen, or something like that. He sat around in stock for months, and even dropped further below that before he finally sold out. The discounts change depending on fast they want to move it.

Also, I don't know where you're seeing $200+ for Ludger. He's still in stock at Amiami for just over 10k Yen, with is barely $100 USD.

Wouldn't buying them be more expensive with taxes and shipping fees and all? I never buy omnibuses anyway so that's not a big issue in any case, nor do I like buying floppies that much, but I should look in it like you mentioned.

So do you buy anything from Kino?
>>
>>86043391
Like I said, you have to weigh all the options.

With local bookstores like Kinokuniya, you are paying above 120% of the MSRP.

With international vendors you can easily pay 20-25% less than MSRP if you are smart.
For example, instocktrades is 42% off on DC/Marvel. With international shipping on large orders, you can easily save 30%.
Bookdepository offers 20-25% off on selected items, with free delivery. And so on.

I have bought books from Kinokuniya only when it is not available from elsewhere. Like Colossal Conan. It went OOP almost everywhere else, except slow comic market like UAE.

Hell one month DC put ads on the page with he panels

Probably one of the best I've gotten. It has a sewn in bookmark and everything. If your on the fence but like Rachel Rising, just do it. The HC version is likely to sell out quickly. Hey all, I'm kinda new to buying comics and /co/ in general because I usually just CBR'd my stuff but now that I'm getting into "collecting" per se, I was wondering Trade Paperbacks or Omnibus'? I'm more looking for longevity rather than how it looks on a shelf, so I'm thinking TPB? They're cheaper too from what I gather?
>>
>>86073403
TPBs are obviously cheaper, but in terms of longevity an Omnibus is the better option. Although those aren't offered for every comic.

Jimmy Olsen is absolutely horrible and a lot of Superman stuff as well since it's just what-if..., Superman-is-so-fucking-powerful-he-can-literally-do-anything and Lois-Lane/Lana-Lang-tries-to-discover-Superman's-secret-identity-yet-again stories. there is no continuity at all, it's just episodic. at least the legion has a bit of continuity
>>
>>86077870
I read somewhere covers and stories were completely separate, first some idiot drew a cover that showed some outrageous bullshit and then the writer and artist had to come up with some pants-on-head retarded story that does the shit on the cover but keeps the status-quo intact.
at the end of the silver age, marvel was miles ahead of DC just because they managed to create some kind of continuity and stayed relatively grounded, not inventing new super powers every other week like they did at DC.

One of my favorite comics ever, hands down - I bought the original Epic tpb just so I could compare the differences between the two. I reread the series every year and I always seem to get something new out of it - it's like I can see my own growth as an adult reflected through the story.

It's one of the few comics that actually deserves an Absolute edition from DC. It's so sad that it faded into obscurity, DeMatteis can never seem to get a break now.

Anon no one wants to buy Naruto off me, SAO and Ao no Exorcist are my bros', Synder Batman was a mistake and I got Forever with the others in a box set for dirt cheap.

I like Bakuman, the main characters are the ones I'm reading it for and not the females that are devoid of personality.

And apart from Sonic Chronicles I do enjoy his other games. I have a bunch of his PS3 and Wii outings as well, it's just not in the pics I posted.

>>86085575
They have a huge catalog of old comics, both single issues and collections.
Their rating system is also quite strict and a "near mint" is actually "near mint", unlike regular vendors on ebay.
The shipping prices are very reasonable as well.
>>
>>86083772
>DeMatteis can never seem to get a break now.
Tell me about it, the guy can still write unlike other old farts that keep getting work, his Phantom Stranger run was amazing and it had so many things going against it, from the numerous crossovers to the fact that Marc didn't actually have a hand in this version of the Stranger's creation and didn't do the first few issues, and yet...wow.

I think with Moonshadow the rights fully reverted to JMD and I think he said last year that he's looking to release a nice Deluxe edition of it somewhere. Here's hoping.

Figured this is worth asking here since everyone in this thread will be a buyfag.

What are good starting points/good runs in general (that are in print) for the following characters?

>Supergirl
>Thor
>Cassandra Cain
>Aquaman
>anything by JMS (huge B5 fan, but have never read any of his comics)

They're stuff I want to try, and I know the conventional wisdom is to pirate a bit first, but I can't stand reading from my phone or tiny laptop screen, and I don't have access to my desktop while I'm working away from home for weeks at a time.

The problem isn't reading them, the problem is gravity. Trades sit with the pages flat on the shelf. Hardcovers have a gap between the pages and the shelf and over time the pages pull away from the spine because they have no bottom support.

For all my omnibi and other heavy hardcovers I have to cut out rectangles of cardboard to stick under the pages so the books don't fall apart under their own weight.

This as well, it was the first two story arcs, you can find god killer/god bomb in oversized HC in one volume but its from a while ago now, the Ribic art is worth it alone.

I don't know how the hell Aarons Thor went from that era to what it is now currently... its a god damn shame. At least Dautermans art is fantastic i just wish it was in service of a better plot.
>>
>>86101872
>I love me some Kirby, but Thor suffers from having one of the worst inkers in the industry.

Yeah and Simonsons run is such a kick to the head that after that you could always go look at the previous run, but its the way i feel about Spider-Man as well, theres so many good places to start on more current runs, go back and read the original stuff later if youre really into it. The old old stuff tends to only be appealing if youre a completionist or like old comics in general
>>
>>86102282
There's a pretty clear descent in quality starting from the third arc, with the 2nd half of his GoT run not having Ribic and also not tying up almost any plot strands

There is nothing really wrong with the art in ASM 1-38.
I find the Simonson's run loses focus around the time Busceema takes over on art.

I'm kinda newish to comics. Not really new, but I just haven't been collecting for long.

I collected lots of manga in high school, but it's mostly shit that I got bored with after the first arc with a few exceptions.

I had a meager collection of Batman trades when the Dark Knight came out, but my town's last book store closed down shortly after. It's only in the last few years that I started collecting again.

Not pictured, my Sonic and Megaman shelf

Please excuse the dust, I live in the worst place ever where dust manages to coat everything within hours.

Anyone want to toss a recommendation for me?

It's almost comic buying day and the only thing I know for certain I'm picking up is the follow up to death of superman.

I usually try to pick out a comic or two im currently collecting, a comic I'm not collecting but is from a franchise i'm aware of and am curious about, and finally, I try to pick out one I know fuck all about and take a chance on it.Nnewts was shit by the way

If you liked Long Halloween check out Dark Victory its the followup, also theres another two TMNT books out like the one you have so if you like that get the second volume.

also, Hellboy, BPRD. (because i can't not recommend it)
>>
>>86108699
Long Halloween was my first GN, and probably still my favorite Batman story. But Dark Victory is actually sitting right next to it. Been meaning to re-read that one actually.

Turtles are definitely on my list too, it's just a matter of having a $30+ book in the budget.

I'll probably add Hellboy to the list, I hear good things, but I've never really looked into it much.

I've thought about getting Knightfall.

>>
>>86107416
It's fine and all, especially compared to your typical Marvel and DC recolors but it's sort of flat, the colorist didn't get very creative with it and he works with a very fixed palette. I think it actually pops more and looks more expressive in B&W. Besides it's the original version and so on.

Yeah cause I totally love paying $20 for 4 issues of a series printed on the worst cheapest possible paper like Marvel does when I can get a 10 to 14 issue book for the same price on GASP NEWSPRINT?! Oh the humanity. It's like you never read a comic that came out before the year 2000. Fucking pleb. Newsprint is miles better than the shit Marvel prints their shit on, now that's literally shit printed on shit.
>>
>>86110430
I'm actually okay with that, I'd rather newsprint than transparent skin of the teeth thin paper like some companies use nowadays.
>>
>>86110499
Newsprint paper at most gets yellow after years, if not decades.
Glossy paper, specially Marvel's tin one, gets wavy within years.

At work on phone and don't have any pictures, but I'm just wondering, where and how does everyone like to get their stuff? Do you pick up stuff weekly from your LCS, or do you like to hit up used book stores? Or simply Amazon.

Personally, I save up all year and take a trip down to TN to hit up McKay's in Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville and end up dropping a few grand on comics/manga/books/music/movies/cartoons/anime/game/shows/figures...

They also have decent trade rates, so whenever I see books in the free bins or super cheap at garage sales, I pick 'em up.

Newsprint is acceptable for comics from the 80s and earlier because that is what they were colored for, so it looks 'right'. Modern comics look like shit on newsprint because it dulls the colors, you need a higher quality paper to render the colors the way they were meant to be seen.

If you seriously don't mind reading a modern comic on newsprint then you're probably one of those idiots who buys a 2016 album on vinyl too.
>>
>>86116331
and you are a bigger idiot since we were talking about a comic from the 90s
>>
>>86116469
Which therefore isn't 80s and earlier. McCrea's art is too intricate for newsprint and the coloring has too much depth to it. I'm not saying it has to be glossy but at least print it on decent quality paper.
