You could start by buying a haynes manual for your car. Should only set you back about $20 bucks and has everything you need to know about easy DIY car fixing. Won't actually teach you about mechanics and physics though, it's all practical information strictly on car repairs.

Initial reaction is usually "uh, you work here?"

Then do that 'well ok' face and then continue like normal
Then as we're talking 1 on 1 it starts to dawn on them that I'm trans, which usually means they keep talking like normal but their eyes get all bug eyed and they don't realize, or they just immediately laugh (more out of confusion and realization than at my appearance) I hope and then apologize and then keep talking about whatever. Sometimes they feel brave enough to chat me up about it but usually they just go about their business as usual. Maybe once a month I get a comment like "you're disgusting" or they ask for a different mechanic. I don't really care because I get a lot of flattery like 'you're really pretty' or 'you're brave' daily.

I get an average of 3-4 unsolicited phone numbers a day. I don't think I'm that good looking either

When I was a kid I felt like I needed to compensate for my strong feelings of wanting to be a girl by being as masculine as possible instead. I built my computer when I was 10, my kid logic concluded that fixing cars would be similar to building computers and was more manly so I started researching that, then went to tech school after high school. Then when that did nothing to stave off girly feelings I started lifting weights, drinking, and fucking around. Not only did that not work, I basically thought of suicide every waking moment and finally snapped and just said if I'm already at the point where I want to die I have nothing to lose from just trying living as a girl. Easily the best decision of my life, I dropped all the stupid shit, but along the way I found out that actually really enjoy fixing cars so I stuck with it.

Yep. It's pretty basic. Comes with some sprays, some cleaning pads, will tell you what order to do everything in. Even if you only drop 10 or 15 bucks you should notice a huge improvement.

Basically when you have new headlights, the plastic is has a film layer that protects it, and when that layer erodes the plastic starts to get fucky. You need the kit to wipe it down and apply a new protective layer, that's why soap and water won't make a difference. Some people literally pay 1500 bucks to get new headlights for something that's an incredibly easy fix, it blows my mind

you want to do headlight restoration, which involves sanding the plastic at increasing grit levels of sandpaper and then finish off with plastic polishing compound and some uv sealant

Most of them you can find on the internet, for free. If you have a new car, is 200 dollars really that expensive to you? If you have any interest it's what you should be looking to get. A lot of people aren't computer savy. 200 is often a lot to a college student who's parents bought them their first car. I'm used to dealing with people daily who know literally knowing about cars, don't know how to effectively self-learn and don't have anyone to show them the ropes, so I've always taken the 'gently ease-in' approach to instructing. I wouldn't recommend someone who's never played video games start by building a pc even though that's what I use myself. I wouldn't recommend someone who wants to learn how to cook to buy a new quality knife, sharpener, quality pans etc. until they've at least tried the basics on whatever they have available first, despite the huge difference quality cookware makes. I can see how you would think "why bother with all that? Just skip to what matters, if you stick with it all that beginner shit will have been nothing but a waste of time" and for some people that's definitely going to be the case but I just feel like my approach is safer. I hope you at least don't think bad of all mechanics just because you might think one (me) is an idiot.
