Having grown up with the Beano until the age of 11, I can assure anyone unfamiliar with it that it's probably the least funny comic this side of the fucking solar system.

The only series that was genuinely funny was Ratz. It had this great 70's, London underground punk aesthetic and it always had something great going on in the background of the panels.
I remember Derek the Sheep being somewhat amusing from time to time as well, but other than that the Beano was a pile of shite that occasionally came with a decent toy.

I did love the 1990s Dennis the Menace animated show though. Surprisingly well cast and well written show for something they'd put on at 8 in the morning.

It's aimed at young kids. It used to cost way less that £1, so was basically just a weekly thing kids could spend a bit of pocket money on along with some sweets.

As such, a lot of the more long lasting characters like Dennis, Gnasher, Minnie, Roger, and the Bash Street Kids have a nostalgic place in a lot of Brits hearts.

Actually I can explain that, as I had a couple of these ones I picked up from a school charity sale as a kid (Not the Savile one though sadly)

That's just how they were printed. One big panel on every page. They were books which only had one long story in. Thicker than a standard comic, but smaller in width and height than your average book.

Nah, Bash Street's a comprehensive school. If you've got money you go to public schools (which are the ones you pay for over here despite the name), and if the pupils live on the school site it's a boarding school. If you live in one of the few areas which still have grammar schools you have to pass an exam between the age of eleven or twelve to attend one, which is a holdover from the days of selective education. Everything else is a comprehensive school which is sort of a one size fits all. There's also academies which are relatively new and uniformly terrible, where the schools were given a lump sum by the government to get things running and privately run after that, the local education authorities have no influence over them.

Bash Street would have probably been closed after their first Ofsted inspection, not for being an anarchic shit hole where the savage children literally rule as they see fit, but for poor old Teach not being "dynamic" or "edutational" enough in his teaching methods. This they would blame for his poor results, not for the children being uncontrollable but because most Ofsted inspectors are inadequates who couldn't hack being a real teacher and decided instead to prey on the real thing like a particularly disgusting kind of parasitic worm. Then Headmaster would bugger off to another area with a huge lump sum payment, open an academy, take the huge lump sum from that and run said school into the ground and retire at the age of fifty before the inspectors would shut him down. Then the government would steal Teacher's pension to pay for all this and raise his retirement age to 75.
