Imagine being of the age where every shit is a memorable occurrence. It's going to take you upwards of a quarter hour at least to get this done, so you make sure everyone in the house knows the washroom's going to be occupied.

Then, about ten minutes in, the entire goddamn neighbourhood walks into your washroom like a parade. They immediately realize their error, but they don't leave, they don't apologize, they stand there and laugh. You're sitting there utterly exposed and the entire community is slapping themselves on the back over your granddaughter's error. What a fucking hell that must be.

Having grown up with the Beano until the age of 11, I can assure anyone unfamiliar with it that it's probably the least funny comic this side of the fucking solar system.

The only series that was genuinely funny was Ratz. It had this great 70's, London underground punk aesthetic and it always had something great going on in the background of the panels.
I remember Derek the Sheep being somewhat amusing from time to time as well, but other than that the Beano was a pile of shite that occasionally came with a decent toy.

I did love the 1990s Dennis the Menace animated show though. Surprisingly well cast and well written show for something they'd put on at 8 in the morning.

It's aimed at young kids. It used to cost way less that £1, so was basically just a weekly thing kids could spend a bit of pocket money on along with some sweets.

As such, a lot of the more long lasting characters like Dennis, Gnasher, Minnie, Roger, and the Bash Street Kids have a nostalgic place in a lot of Brits hearts.

It's been ruined in recent years though to the point that I wouldn't be surprised to hear it ending before 2020.

>who's scanned it has for some inexplicable reason cropped and posted every individual panel rather than pages.

Actually I can explain that, as I had a couple of these ones I picked up from a school charity sale as a kid (Not the Savile one though sadly)

That's just how they were printed. One big panel on every page. They were books which only had one long story in. Thicker than a standard comic, but smaller in width and height than your average book.

Minnie isn't really supposed to be cute. Her ugliness is just part of her character. Even the artists who draw basically every other character in a more visually appealing way struggles with Minnie because she's got some pretty crooked buck teeth when her mouth is open. She's just always going to be an ugly tomboy with bad hair, thick eyebrows, awful fashion sense, and crooked teeth.

And because she's a loud annoying brat, her mouth is ALWAYS open.

Boys tend to share their stuff more than girls, albeit there's a jinty guy/gal who posts a blog about them, but she's a total nutjob and refuses to share anything about Jinty. Nah, Bash Street's a comprehensive school. If you've got money you go to public schools (which are the ones you pay for over here despite the name), and if the pupils live on the school site it's a boarding school. If you live in one of the few areas which still have grammar schools you have to pass an exam between the age of eleven or twelve to attend one, which is a holdover from the days of selective education. Everything else is a comprehensive school which is sort of a one size fits all. There's also academies which are relatively new and uniformly terrible, where the schools were given a lump sum by the government to get things running and privately run after that, the local education authorities have no influence over them.

Bash Street would have probably been closed after their first Ofsted inspection, not for being an anarchic shit hole where the savage children literally rule as they see fit, but for poor old Teach not being "dynamic" or "edutational" enough in his teaching methods. This they would blame for his poor results, not for the children being uncontrollable but because most Ofsted inspectors are inadequates who couldn't hack being a real teacher and decided instead to prey on the real thing like a particularly disgusting kind of parasitic worm. Then Headmaster would bugger off to another area with a huge lump sum payment, open an academy, take the huge lump sum from that and run said school into the ground and retire at the age of fifty before the inspectors would shut him down. Then the government would steal Teacher's pension to pay for all this and raise his retirement age to 75.

Education in this country isn't what it used to be.

They only skewed towards romance and aliens, even so decline of girls comics can be attributed to the change of an era. It died beause the age of comics was over, not because Bunty was shit.
>>
>>85998510
Me neither can't understand why gag-comics get so much attention, and not only girls, but it gets even more attention than regular boys stuff. Dandy and Beano is just, plain ugly. I also can't understand why there isn't a proper UK comics library over the internet. So many questions dude.

John Byrne once did a fascinating column piece on the history of British Girls' comics of the 50s and 60s which was only slighltlly ruined by the dreadful certainty that he had his crooked brown teeth scrunched up in concentration as he cranked one out to dear petite nubile Tabitha or Chloe or Cindy going around solving mysteries or time traveling back to the pyramids. Still, he obviously had a great deal of genuine enthusiasm for this now dead artform he prized above all others as prime wank bank currency.

These comics were dead before I could read them. You repeatedly made statements that were untrue, then just moved the goalposts when you got called on it until you were at 'nuh-uh girls' comics were good'. If they were, post some good stuff from then. Right now all you're doing is sitting a thread bitching out people for something most of us have never read. Why? Do you feel that's a good use of your time? It sure as shit won't convince anyone of your PoV.

I just don't get the point of American Dennis. The most menacing thing he does is accidentally hit his baseball through Mr Wilson's petunias or some tame bullshit. At least British Dennis has balls. >Academies
>Run solely by religious groups
>Plan to force all schools to become academies (which was overturned... for now).
I didn't think the Tories were capable of becoming far-right fundies, despite what the lefties were saying.

Should we now start believing it? I'm a bit scared.

Also, I don't know how to square this desire to give the control over to the church and mosque etc. when the fundie element would most likely be Christian in the Tory party, and also, this whole EDO plan will effectively render all religious groups (and atheists) as extremists.

So whose side are they on? The academies move conflicts with the EDO move.

Note that these things will allow the government to make you a non-violent extremist officially, even though non-violent = nothing the law should worry about.

And they won't prove you guilty, even though terrorism-related things always were criminal - they'll take you to court in a CIVIL SUIT and make you the next Unabomber on the balance of probabilities, which is far lower.

Fuck me, this is someone's freedom, not ownership of a Ming vase.

Why people aren't furious at this - the press, for example - the biggest change in how we do things since the Magna Cunting Carta 900 years ago, is beyond me, and that's most worrying of all.

Isn't it great how comics can get you all political like?

Could you explain a bit more? How does the channel lead to shite?

Also, bear in mind they made shit like Bob the Builder, which is owned by HiT, and that's sold overseas so they can still compete, right (BTB as an example).
>>
>>86010882
m8 I can't deal with this. The academies thing is years-old at this point. Given it was Michael Gove's baby it's unlikely to occur under a May government.

But you talking about like, OMG what do we do, why aren't the press covering this - they did.

I hate May, kind of. I hate the kind of nanny state governance that is always willing to sacrifice individual liberty for state supervision, and that is May. Stuff like the snooper's charter is just going to clog up the search for actual useful data.

Ah, I dunno. This batch of the Tories is from a different set than the previous, but they're fundamentally the same. Keeping Hunt as health secretary is a sign of further cuts and privatization coming, and Hammond has a long record of selling off parts of the state to private companies with the MoD. As does our new defense secretary. Nobody in Westminster cares about good governance anymore - look who we have as head of DEFRA, the MoD, the NHS. The only decent appointment May made was education.

I have just woken up so bear with me

They stopped having generally two blocks of programming a day one before school and one after

The before school block was always filled with repeats of TV shows such as Scooby-Doo and Danger Mouse while the afternoons were filled with newer imports and the BBC in house productions such as Blue Peter and the Demon Headmaster but when Freeview came around they decided to create a channel lasting from seven in the morning till seven at night so they had to create new programs on shoestring budgets to just cover the timeslot alongside with repeats of in house productions such as endless Tracy Beaker repeats because it had a limited budget due to it being the BBC while also sharing a budget with Cbeebies which was always going to be priority in the long run due to the amount of small kids watching it and the ability to sell CBeebies productions overseas. It also didnt help a good chunk of people didnt have Freeview for a good few years after the CBBC Channel and Cbeebies started

CITV also had the same problems but at least its budget wasn't constrained by a limited budget but by how much its ads sell for but that was always going to be a challenge when competing with Nick and Cartoon Network (I would put the Disney Channel but they were still a subscription channel at this point)

Drunken Bakes is unremittingly bleak and depressing. They're unsalvageable alcoholics like a modern day Pagliacci, their lives will never improve and any glimmer of hope is so utterly destroyed you feel worse for reading it.

It's looking into the abyss, and it's beautiful.

Well, that panel implies he's pretty much a vegetable without them.

People seem to be baffled by his strangeness and so it can be assumed that either the guys in his head are doing a shit job compared to everyone elses', or he's the only person like that. If so, why is he different from everyone else? Is he an artificial human?

Maybe I was getting a little too old by the time the Numbskulls started, but also the gross-out stuff went too far for me.

Dennis' mum is the previous Minnie. The current Minnie being a cousin makes sense though, I guess that'll have to be the case now.

Unless they want Dennis x Minnie to be a tradition for the legacy, then that's going to get a little awkward.

That's weird, I've lived on both sides of the pond and I always found American comedy to be more "laughing AT someone," like Big Bang Theory or Always Sunny. On the other hand they were less likely to have "crossing the line" humour like the UK, but I found UK comedy to make the unlucky protagonists more relateable so it was more laughing at their relateable suffering rather than from a distance. But then the states made Always Sunny like I mentioned which constantly goes "too far," so there's a lot of crossover.

I think we have to consider where the two Dennis' were published, literally. US Dennis was in a newspaper that is more of an all-ages thing, but also a lot of adults would read newspapers so it was probably trying to not be too offensive. While UK Dennis has, from the start, always been in a publcation especially for kids to enjoy on their own.
>>
>>86018055
Minnie the Minx is just a title that is passed on not through bloodline, but worthiness. As Minnie approaches her late teens, she observes the troublesome young kids in the area to find the one most suitable to carry on the name of The Minx legacy.

I think what we really need is Dennis's mom finding her old Minx outfit and trying it on again to see how it fits
>>
>>86018374
The Beano kids (Dennis, Roger, and Minnie especially) are a bit like Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Their pranks and schemes escalate quickly, but the pay-off is usually them getting their commupence, be through it back-firing, an adult punishing them, or public humiliation that ruined their "tough guy image". When they win, their targets usually deserved it.

Only flat out mean spirited one was Calamity James.

You might have a point. To >>86018518 as well I feel like Bongland Dennis, and the Dandy and Beano in general, have much more in common with early 20th Century US comics - Think of the ones where Mickey and Donald actually beat people up and stuff. They're just generally more irreverent towards authorities whether they're parents, teachers or even the law. America seemed to go through a phase in the mid-20th Century that the UK never really did, with concern for public morality and things which were borne out in stuff like the Hays Code and the CCA. I think this took the teeth out of US kids comics for quite a long time and still leaves a legacy today.
