Did you mean to type "past its prime"?
>>
>>85943726
Because the early 2000s ended and most of these old Flash sites are dead and gone, and the ones that aren't are on their way out. Nu-Internet has no place for sites like that anymore
>>
>>85943898
The only reason it can be considered "past it's prime" is because of all the people that left it for youtube. There are still a lot of quality artists coming to the site, and the site itself is still great.
>>
>>85943726
The flash games went to steam. The flash videos to youtube. Nothing is left. The site is dead.
>>
it's weird to think kids and teenagers used to spend so much time working on animations just for the hell of it, even though most of it looked like shit.
does a community like that still exist in that age group? or is it all lets play videos?
>>
>>85943982
>youtube
Flash animators aren't going to youtube anymore ever since they changed the monetization model. People still frequently upload to Newgrounds. Some even make it a thing to upload to Newgrounds only. It's by no means a dead site.
>>
>>85943898
Make NewGrounds great again.

Didn't they recently hide all the porn to attract advertisers?

this is true
NG may not be as active as it used to be, but it's by no means a barren wasteland.
loads of old folks that used to populate it, like oscar johannson and whichever demon that made foamy, are heading back to it, or are at least planning to. the group that made there she is!!, the guy that made bitey, and probably a couple more in a few weeks or months
rob denblyker pls come back
i need joe zombie 7 to be real
>>
>>85944059
Funny thing. I've been making more money streaming my animation work on youtube then ALL my videos combined (and my animations have 200k to 20 million views a piece).

I expect once i finish the animation im working on and upload it, it wont make 1/10th what the streaming revenue has. Blows my god damn mind.

I dont know if I should be sad or upset that this flash animation era started and also died with us.

I remember losing my shit when I discovered this website and finding the porn games too. What's it gonna be like for kids now?
>>
>>85947213
are you kidding? most kids watch people play games or watch surprise egg videos.
there's nothing wrong with watching let's plays, but i feel like it heavily discourages younger kids finding more entertainment besides it

>>
>>85948193
It's not even viable today. Anyone with a decent amount of charisma is gonna do something far more productive for money than playing video games, and even if you do get popular you have shitfaces like PDP who have legions of fans that will downvote/flag your video because fuck you.

It's an ugly field and it's best nobody bothered getting into it.
>>
>>85948193
Google is actually LOSING money from Youtube. Makes you wonder why they bought it in the first place.
>>
>>85943726

imagine if newgrounds becomes super popular due to youtube going to complete shit
>>
>>85948565
That would require them switching the site to html 5 and it would also require them to allow non animated content. Although iirc they already do have that as cameraboii's Harry Potter abridged were uploaded on there.
>>
>using Newgrounds for cartoons

No way. Newgrounds was always for gaming, it's /v/ territory. Even then other sites have better games. Newgrounds is mainly good for nostalgic games like that one where you torture the doll or that burger making simulator starring Bush iirc (and even then Papa's Arcadia is superior).
>>
>>85948443
Youtubers are making money off of sponsors so both parties benefit by cutting out the middle-man. I think Crunchyroll pays $5.00 per new subscriber. Audible probably pays more.

YouTube's been doing the same thing that it's been doing for a while. That "advertiser-friendly" shit has been in their ToS for a while now and it's been enforced all this time. It's just that now they're being more transparent about demonetizing things by sending creators notifications and adding an appeals process. This has brought along with it the revelation of yet another YouTube automated system that fucks up and sees false-positives all over the place.

The idea that YouTube is going to demonetize everybody's shit for cussing or discussing sensitive topics is fucking stupid. The site's biggest creators should be talking about the facts and asking YouTube to do better and improve their systems, especially their appeal systems, but instead they're capitalizing on it and riling up their retarded communities into yet another "YouTube is ruined!" shit-show and raking in all those sweet views and subs.

It really makes me upset that they moved to a html 5 based player. I absolutely understand why they did it, but so many interactive elements of many flash films are lost now. Loading minigames as the swf loaded up, random shit being clickable in the background or Easter eggs that could only be seen if you zoomed in really close.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers who Rtil is, but he was a really talented animator who was pretty critical of newgrounds and egoraptor back in the day. A while bacl someone sent a message to his tumblr regarding Newgrounds and he replied.

http://rtilrtil.tumblr.com/post/148908847721/was-watching-your-old-stuff-on-newgrounds-and-i

>iā€™m not exactly heartbroken over it, the only way i coped with being part of such a horrible community was by constantly satirizing it. and when that got old i decided to leave, and i was much happier having done so. that was back in 2011.

>Newgrounds was a great place for animators before people got spoiled by instantly buffering video and the rise of YouTube. and even though itā€™s adapted now, itā€™s too dated and they waited too long to do it.

>nowadays if youā€™re a new animator itā€™s easy to get overwhelmed looking at how much content there is now, but itā€™s still possible to break out. the only difference is that back then, content sites did the promotional work for the creator - now itā€™s the other way around. even if your work is incredible, if youā€™re not going the extra mile to target the right audience, nobody will find it. Youtubeā€™s cold, unforgiving algorithms are actively working against the underdog, which Newgrounds always tried to circumvent with hand-picked, curated content (even if it didnā€™t work so well). I guess thatā€™s one thing about NG i might actually miss.

>and no, Ego and i never got along for good reasons, and i have no interest in pretending that i could.

Not to mention how shitty the html5 player is. It seems like any time I skip to a specific section there's a 20% chance that the video will permanently lock into a 'buffering' loop and I'll have to refresh the page, which is really fucking frustrating when I'm trying to find a specific part in a video or replay something.

Big name animators and quality series aren't even half the fun of Newgrounds, though. NG used to be good because it was an unmoderated cesspit of the internet not unlike 4chan. Turd of the Week, shitpost flashes, amateur hentai games and sprite animations were what made NG so fascinating. Then Tom just kinda went "we web 2.0 now" and tried to turn it into this big serious artist networking thing except the career artists would now rather be earning money through Patreon and everyone else got alienated. Casual Flash also pretty much died everywhere in the process. All this isn't likely to be fixed by any amount of money.

Newgrounds as a site is great. The "higher ups" or big names like Stamper, Spazkid and Johnnyutah nowadays are nice enough to help people get a boost here and there

The majority of the community is garbage. I used to love newgrounds, i still animate to this day, i even attended picoday.

As i said the big names were great, accommodating, friendly. Made ya feel nice when they weren't swarmed by everyone trying to befriend them

There were a few gems here and there outside that circle of content creators. But for the most part it was people that have made 1 or 2 cartoons that did well, thought they were gods and only wanted to shit on other cartoons. Most of the people i interacted with led with jokes at others expense or just "hey do you guys hate this toon cuz i do, lets mock the creator who isnt here"

Plus everyone looks up to all the sleepycast people who mock each other because they're already good friends, and think "hey if i treat people like shit, ill be funny and popular". Fair assumption nowadays but its just birthed so many content creators that would rather trash an artists reputation rather than build up their own

Tldr; the site is still great, the community is garbage

the latter isn't an excuse for the former, they're two independent situations.

mostly because i'm not really committed to the idea of being an animator of any sort, it's just a novel "hey it'd be cool if i could do that", which i'd hoped would've been indicated by a relatively passive "oh well" instead of a more hyperbolic complaint.
the second part is a problem i actually do face when it comes to producing nearly any kind of content whatsoever: the audience won't find you until you're big. before you're big, you've got to go hunt down the audience. it's often just too much effort to purposefully seek out people who'll be amused by the kind of things you want to make. (Because ultimately that's what I enjoy: entertaining people.) particularly when you consider that they're plenty entertained already.

It's thread relevant because it's an awkward lamentation of how things are now that things online are relatively established (and Newgrounds has wained in favour of YouTube LPers):You've gotta pour more and more energy into being heard over the background noise and eventually it's easier to just be quiet and give up than it is to try and claw yourself to the top of the pile.
>>
>>85974679
I am curious how long LPs will continue to be so god damn popular instead of actual content. Once millennials grow out of the teens?
>>
>>85974707
I'm going to wager quite a while. If we wanted to draw pedantic lines, they might be pushed aside by live streams (which allow for interactivity and surprises while excusing lower production values) but I can't see them being displaced by any high-effort content.

The video-game gives you a jump start on attracting an audience in a way you can't really get with more high-effort original content. Games as a whole are always coming out and giving you something new to play over as well. You can't really get that with more high-effort content creation (You do get things like Prequel, which benefit from an established audience for TES, but it works in different ways.)

I used to love NG, signed up in 2003 but I had been visiting the site before that. I had over 12,000 forum posts even. I grew out of it when I got older, but man did I have some good times watching flash cartoons for years and years.

I visited NG just a couple days ago and took a look around- it feels very different, and it seems like it's definitely struggling. The site's life cycle mirrored that of Flash- it used to be the next big thing, now it's obsolete.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there.
I used NewGrounds just as much to watch animations as I did playing games.
>>
>>85953376
I've probably listened to this song more in the past 72 hours then I have since I first played the Meet n Fuck games.

If any of you remember this you had a true NewGrounds experience.

>he doesn't casually shill himself by inserting his animation every time somebody makes an animator thread
>he doesn't try to derail threads towards his animations so he can shill himself.

fuck shame, animators got to eat.

were flash games ever really a "scene" or did they just feel like they were because I was 12 and playing them at school?
>>
>>85989560
The latter.

the animation community on the other hand went deep.

all of those are the worst kinds of platforms for art and animation, get ready for a big post
>tumblr
even though there's a lot of great artists on there that make good fan content and original content, you'll be lucky to find it unless you already know their blog name, or they drew a piece of fanart for a popular show.
like this one japanese guy i like, that draws a bunch of really well made anthro art. there's a piece he did of a cat ballerina that has 15,000-ish reblogs, but the rest of his blog is pretty underlooked.
actually, most japanese artists that post onto tumblr are pretty much ignored or not given much recognition, unless they know english. you gotta be fuckin excellent right off the bat or use popular Tumblr Methods to get up in the thousands, like using a skin disease to be Progressiveā„¢.
or draw all of your characters a set ethnicity, especially with humanizations, even if they HAVE no ethnicity. absolutely no white allowed, that's not Progressiveā„¢ enough.
>youtube
>implying
they just sent out a policy that fucked over animators and general content creators even MORE, so that one's a big ole' no. vimeo is usually where college animators post their short films and work, save for back in the earlier days of youtube (like maybe around 2006-2012) when a lot of experimental animations were put up onto it. best examples being chainsaw maid, we are the strange and bobby yeah
>twitter
more like the best place to keep up WITH artists.
i follow artists on twitter, but they mostly talk about their own life instead of posting their art, like how they just finished the scans for their comic pages, or their kids' comics.
i can't understand how twitter would even be a good art platform, they're master class at censorship
>>
>>85946069
>self reliant

I cannot believe someone who made this actually thought gen meme who start having Facebook at age 9 aren't dependent

the delusion is real
>>
>>85945510
I'm trying that too. If you don't mind me asking, Is it YouTube ad revenue you're earning or is it donations? If it's the former, do you listen to music while you animate and if so, how do you bypass the copyright bots when doing so?
