>There's only us
>There's only this
>Forget regret
>Or life is yours to miss

Welcome again to our daily group therapy sessions for those who are surviving through "Dumbing of Age". When we previously met, David Willis had decided to end the story on some kind of a bittersweet cliffhanger in which Amber recognized a potential rapist in a crowded crowd of conservatives and everybody else in the cast went to sleep.

While we wait for tonight's shipment of AZT from The Patreanon, let us reminisce on events past and how we can use them to better inform our decisions in the future. For example, we can learn by example that being sent to juvenile detention at thirteen has no impact on how your parents perceive you; rather, it is entirely based upon the color of your skin, even if it can be proven that your skin is the same exact color as your sibling.

If you wish to speak, please do not be afraid to make yourself heard.

>Alt title: /doag/: it's fucking nothing edition.

Since Willis loves his bookends, we're never going to get a resolution to the rally plot.

Every "book" begins with the characters waking up in the morning and ends with them going to bed at night.

The best we'll get is either flashbacks or Amber offhandedly explaining that she just ran off or something.
>>
>>85928044
So that rapist traveled back in time and told a child that looks just like him to harm Marcie? Wow, deepest lore.

But I guess it explains this preview panel.

It turns out it's the rapist's slightly older/younger brother. And the next strip will have Sal slashing this little fucks face so that he has the exact same scar as Ryan.

No context, just a rocky ditch (I think?) next to a playground, and a kid on roller-skates this-is-sparta'd into it.

Also I wish he knew how to draw. He can differentiate between girls and women, but all his boys look like midget men.

Why does she get kicked into a muddy ditch, but land on grass? Why is Walky closer to Leland when Sal was closer and would've charged in first? Why is the teacher stopping Sal and Walky instead of checking on Marcie? Why is she so focused on Sal *and* Walky anyway when the strip doesn't actually show enough of Walky's motivation to know what the hell he even did? (I know the answer to this is racism) Also, ditto to >>85928942 about the rocks and rebar.

>>
>>85930605
If he wanted a cliffhanger ending he should have had the crowd split between support for Sal and support for Amazi-Girl, skipped Amber wavering in her desire for revenge, dropped Ryan or at least have him unnoticed in the background, and made the bookend Dina waking up Ethan because she read some of what Amber wrote and is afraid she's gone off the deep end.

>I shouldn’t have gotten so excited to see Ryan’s ass get kicked…now I’m left with a feeling of emptiness for the rest of this night.

>This is way too abrupt. It’s not good storytelling. Maybe if it happened before all the Amazigirl stuff. But this is like slamming on the brakes for no reason other than freak the passenger out.
>I dunno, it’s where I would have placed a cliffhanger if it were me. With so many plot threads going on they can’t all come to a rest at once.
>That would be the same as putting a cliffhanger here. http://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-6/01-to-those-whod-ground-me/hostage-2/

>i…. okay?

>Now we buckle up for six weeks of Joe and Roz talking about fast food before coming back to these plotlines?
>Well, at least a week of Sal flashbacks because we all foolishly asked for that 3 months ago.

>Augh, no, why, I wanna see mentally ill superhero shenanigans, what is this nonsense.

>The cliffhangers and tantalising teasers would probably work better if this wasn’t a daily strip.

Here's one that Willis responded to:
>Williiiis! Why did we jump over here from Sal and Amazi-girl NOW!? … I really hope we go back there tomorrow.
>i’ll think about it
What a hack.

Also, somebody theorized that Mary is going to be Ryan's next victim.

>>
>>85939519
I can see the comments now...

>Carla rapes Mary
>Standard Commenter: Rape is forced sex + privilege, so you see Mary actually raped Carla. That fucking monster.
> Sane Person: What the fuck is wrong with you?
> Willis: No, that's accurate, Mary has always been the devil incarnate since Roomies, so literally anything that happens is due to her evil influence, just like my mom.
> Sane Person: What the fuck is wrong with you!?
>Followed by a ban and Willis tweet bragging about the ban.

>Comic reactions:
>Panel 1: Look at Carla's expression of pleasure and malice! She's been so opressed that she has now become complicit in her own rape!
>Panel 2: Only a complete monster like Mary would be able to take it so deep! I'm getting triggered having to read and jack off to this.
>Panel 3: Why do they keep making stupid faces? It's probably the patriarchy.
>Panel 4: That's really not what dicks look like...
etc.
>>
>>85939519
Like they rationalized her being assaulted by Ruth.
>>
>>85941087
Ruth at that point had started dating Billie so there were still a vast majority of the shippers trying to do damage control for her.

If that had happened further down the line but right before the whole "You belong in the boys dorm" scandal, more people would've been pissed.
>>
>>85941087
What suck is that you guys are right.

Willis's fans are basically saying that violence is okay, as long as it happens to the correct people.

If any of the "likable" characters got assaulted, they'd be upset. But it would be Mary's fault in their eyes.

That actually makes me kind of sad.
>>
>>85941312
It's why we should've known he wasn't going to show the Amber/Sal fight. Too many people feel bad about Amber for him to have Sal curb stomp her like he was originally planning.
>>
>>85939880
Oh god, now I can see Willis making a porn comic off of Mary's rape.

>>85941369
Did Willis say he had plans to show the full fight?
The only recent change of heart I know that Willis has had was changing around the whole thing with Billie and Ruth being revealed as lovers and Walky and Dorothy coming in to comfort them. Or whatever that shit was.
>>
>>85928677
>>85928691
>>85928722
Is this awful on purpose, or is the author just delirious?
>>
>>85942658
both.
>>
>>85941369
I think he'll give us her tragic backstory for ages, then we come back and see Amber beating her up and we're supposed to feel super-bad for Sal because she's so oppressed. Sal smirks the whole time and psyches Amber out until Amber runs off and cries in her room because revenge isn't what she wanted it to be. It shouldn't have been that easy.
>>
>>85941902
But I thought he doesn't edit them??? I mean, he has a three-month buffer. It's just NOT possible.

(Also, he recently admitted to going back and editing some strips where he wanted to have Sal's hands covered with gloves all the time because he originally didn't always have her wearing them.)
>>
>>85943789
No, he'll give us the week long backstory, and when we cut back to real time it'll just be continuing on from where Amber sees Ryan and she tries to chase after him.
>>
>>85930571
>>85930713
I got it, anon.
>>
>>85939880
That would be a Cerberus essay I would love to read.
>>
Ok, I was going through the archives recently (I read the comic with my friends on skype, we read it in silly voices and make fun of it.)

But I noticed while going through it that there was this one strip in the parents day arc that was missing.

It was one where Mikes parents hug Walky while he's in his boxers covering up his dick.

Does Willis just lowkey delete strips too?
>>
>>85945727
I don't think so. Wouldn't exactly put it past him, but I don't think so.

It would be stupid to get rid of that strip anyways. IIRC, the book it appeared in was actually named after it.
>>
>>85945727
It may have only been a bonus strip.
That's actually something you might want to ask Willis about directly via Twitter or Tumblr. See what he has to say.

Somewhere in the middle of Shortpacked is where I noticed it the most. There was that whole storyline about Leslie's bigot parents. Whiiiiiich I realize sounds a lot like Willis's situation.

But that was the first time I noticed a "my mom sucks" storyline of his.
>>
>>85951415
It's funny, I knew somewhere in the middle of Shortpacked, everything suddenly became Willis on his social justice soapbox, but I didn't think it had anything to do with his parents until I read some criticism of DoA.

Seriously though, Shortpacked fell fucking hard. By the end, Willis' complete lack of a grasp of the world around him was so fucking obvious it was ridiculous. The comic's ending wasn't even a fucking ending. He did the same shit there as he did here with the Amazi-Girl/Sal plot. Fucking nothing.

>>
>>85952593
Yes, it's a good hate-read, because it has tiny scraps of potential. It could be a million times worse than what it is, but it's still a trainwreck.

DoA is the kind of comic that has something about it that makes you curious but just tends to fall flat in execution.
>>
>>85953180

I'll admit, I think the maddest I've ever been over a piece of fiction was at a DoA strip.

>>
>>85953313

>>
>>85953590
>>85953774

The one where Becky and Dina hook up.

Dina was my favorite character at the time, and probably the only one left who was in any way tolerable.
Becky is one of the single most obnoxious characters I've ever seen in anything ever. I was so sick of her by that point that her mere presence was enough to irritate me,

Willis pairing them up was like he had literally set out to ruin the one last good thing he had going for the comic.

That and by giving Becky a girlfriend, this only meant MORE of her spouting lesbian jokes now that she has an outlet for it.
>>
>>85953313
was it the trigger warning?
>>
>>85953876
Wait, Becky's a lesbian?
Gosh, I had no idea. How recently was this revealed? It must have taken her ages to come to the self-realization that she's a lesbian.

The joke is that I'm aware that she never shuts up about her lesbianism.
>>
>>85953876
>That and by giving Becky a girlfriend, this only meant MORE of her spouting lesbian jokes now that she has an outlet for it.
Honestly, I thought she was just thirsty as fuck at the start and was hoping Dina would quench her infinite lezlust. I was sorely mistaken.
>>
>>85953939
to be fair, her coming onto Joyce was fairly well-done, IMO.
>>
>>85953990
Agreed. She was fine even when she first began announcing she was a lesbian. She wanted to come out of the closet with a bang, and she got it.

But when she kept pushing it after her initial "yay!" was when it was too much, and literally everything she did was annoying.

Wow, that's subtle.

Also, if Marcie isn't even a student, then yeah, it's kind of her fault for trespassing.

Also also, the implication here is that Leeland (who is now Leland) is White Privilege Incarnate.

Basically, what >>85954143 said. "We get it, Willis; the odds are against Sal."

Also also also, my new headcanon is that Leland is pre-transition Carla. And you can't make me change it, despite that one Patron-only bonus strip with young Car.
>>

>LOLRACISM

Willis is starting to sound like a broken record at this point. Is there ANYTHING in this comic that isn't linked to some sort of social issue?

>>85953990
>>85954054
I honestly liked her when she first came in and even a bit after she came out. But then she kept going on and on and on and on about it. Then suddenly the whole comic was about her. Every character arc and subplot changed gears so that Becky would be involved in some way.

Becky is nothing more than a one-joke gag character, and yet Willis is absolutely determined to make her the most important. And it's not. Fucking. Working.

>Has Willis ever talked to an adult?

One that's not from the 1950s.

I mean if the comic is set in modern day, then that means little Sal would have been a kid in like the early to mid 2000s. No way that wouldn't have ended in a gigantic legal kerfuffle

Worst of all, the more we hate her, the more he includes her.

Because, you know, I guess that's how you get people to like something.
>>
>>85954511
He's mocking people who were on Mary's side of the Carla/Mary conflict.
Mary was literally trying to study when Carla started pestering her, and when people pointed this out to Willis, he got butthurt.
>>
>>85954376
He is SO MAD about that, isn't he? He is so damned insistent that Mary can never have a point about ANYTHING, no matter what she's saying or doing, because Mary is a Bad Person and Bad Persons are never right about anything.

Christ, someone should just buy ad space on DoA with a banner that reads "JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE A VICTIM DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE NOT AN ASSHOLE".
>>
>>85954511
It's a reference to the catalyst of the Mary/Carla conflict from a while back. Mary was trying to study in her room, but Carla was distracting her due to her skating up and down the hallways. Saying that Mary was only trying to study was a point of defense that was ridiculed by those who took Carla's side.

So this is basically Willis' way of plugging his ears and going "La la la, I'm right and you're wrong, shut up shut up shut up". Anticipate "_____ was only trying to study" to become a meme in the future.

This seems to be a semi-decent explanation of why Sal distrusts authority, but not a good one about racism. I guess her parents probably don't have her back, but that's not necessarily a race thing.

The strip itself is pretty retarded considering we're talking about an extremely shitty looking elementary school. It's not like it's a private school or a level of higher learning where concepts like "being a good student" and "having a good future" or a "good family" would actually mean something because of monetary pressure or actual talent. Also, kids that young get in scraps all the time, it doesn't mean they go to jail or anything, right? You just get detention, or something like that. The lady's framing it like this would jeopardize his scholarship or place on a promising team, like it would if it were, say, high school.

I didn't realize Marcie's parents were there illegally. I thought that previous strip where they talk about deportation was more about her race than her actual status, cause Indiana is fairly northern, and I suspect has a low population of illegals?

>>85954376
Lol, what a fucking baby. The situations are not equivalent at all, and I can't think of anyone who would defend a boy punching a girl smaller than them for no reason. Unlike the other situation which was 100% presented as an escalating dispute with both sides being kinda shitty.
>>

>the fuck are they playing next to an open ravine anyway
>Indiana schools must not keep their playgrounds clear of hazards or else recess has gone in some werid direction I hadn’t heard of
>I’m less concerned about the drop and more concerned about what looks like random pieces of sharp jagged metal sticking out of random bits of broken concrete. Marcie’s lucky she wasn’t just impaled.

>Is that random exposed rebar?
>it’s a school so… probably?
>I’m not sure I want to know what kinda crappy-ass school has chunks of random concrete lying around and exposed rebar.

>You know, people complain that kids today are too safe, but a playground with a lack of concrete blocks and exposed reinforcing steel would probably have been a better choice.

>Well, THAT’S one inattentive teacher. Looking right at the kid with the leer and fist, the phrasing of his version of events, Walky’s phrasing of his “confirmation”, and she’s probably gonna end up letting Leland off the hook to add to Sal’s trauma.

>Is it me, or is “charisma” a pretty advanced word for an eight year old?

>If I stare at Panel 1 long enough, it eventually becomes clear that the way Marcie’s drawn *is* actually anatomically possible and not weird at all. But upon first glance, she looks like a human pretzel. It’s weird, and I don’t know why my mind is processing it that way. Possibly it’s all the blue, making it look like a Picasso painting?

Here's a theory someone posited that I'm sure won't be close to the truth:
>So Marcie likely got her throat crushed at some point And my theory’s been that Sal tried to rob places to pay for an operation or something.

What I've learned about how Willis does fiction by anonymous age xx:

1, If people think an aspect is shitty, double down on it, if they continue, triple down. Never back down.

2. Make sure you put in lots of lgbt characters, because people eat that shit up. Only ever put straight or lesbian stuff in the strip proper, though, cause that's what people really want to see, lets be serious.

3. Cling to the past desperately and contradictorily. Deny that past works are necessary, but take pretty much the entirety of your characterization for rarely occurring cast members from previous works. If someone thinks you didn't present a villain well enough, remind them they were villains in the other universe before crying yourself to sleep.

4. Parents are mostly terrible. Use this liberally, but make sure you have a couple of stand out good ones so you can deny the trend.

5. If you have a decent emotional moment, make sure you fix it to put in your wacky one-note characters in! People can't stand emotions without incessant, shitty, out-of-place jokes!

6. When all else fails, just ask what people want and then put it in regardless of pacing or relevance!

Appendix A
After you're done making your work, make sure you go to social media to explain exactly what you meant with the moments in your strip. People could be reading into ambiguous moments or concepts and coming to their own conclusions, and we can't have that! Eliminate all possibilities except for the one you know to be right!

Appendix B: Correction
Entry 4 should read "Parents are all terrible especially dads."
>>
>>85955787

you could even construe it simply as her acting like a rowdy dude
>>
>>85956004
Yeah, some people brought that up in these threads. Mary's remark is so vague she could just be saying "youre acting like a boy" or something.

But I'm serious, I can't wrap my head around it.

We are shown Carla instigating. Mary is literally minding her own business and only says her remark after she's already exhausted all other, more peaceful options. And yet even before the remark, we have to hate her despite her not even fucking doing anything?

What, was she studying up on how to be a bigot? Was she only telling her to stop being loud because she hates trannies? It makes no sense. I'm actually having trouble articulating how bad this writing is.
>>
Maybe you guys should make a thread about Willis on the kiwifarms.
>>
>>85956091
Someone in an earlier /doag/ thread suggested that Willis is trying to depict bigotry and intolerance in his strip without showing anything that would make his readers too uncomfortable...which makes his antagonists seem Jack Chick-esque and his protagonists hypersensitive and aggressive as a result.

At this point, I think the plot of DoA is literally just "whatever Willis thinks the fans want to see".
>>
>>85956091
I don't think Willis likes studying. Walky can't study for shit, Dorothy is supposed to study all the time but never does, Sal tries to fuck her way into good grades, and pretty much the only character who tries to religiously study is Marie in those strips, and she can't. Does he have something against that too ?

>We are shown Carla instigating. Mary is literally minding her own business and only says her remark after she's already exhausted all other, more peaceful options.
What I think is hilarious is that it goes even beyond that. Mary literally left her room just to try to get away from Carla--she even left her door wide open!

She storms down the hallway, which you would assume is her going to the bathroom or somewhere else to get respite.

And Carla follows. She asks where they're going. Mary doesn't want to say anything.

She doesn't say anything until Carla asks a second time.

So we have:
-Carla: is noisy in the hallway
-Mary: asks her to stop and points out that it's against the rules
-Carla: says no and continues
-Mary: lies in the floor hallway to prevent the rule-breaking
-Carla: hops over her, not an easy feat for most people, so it could have been dangerous
-Mary: puts out glue
-Carla: breaking the rules, rolls over glue
-Carla: gets noisier
-Mary: points out that it's against the rules
-Carla: continues to be noisy and tries to tell Mary that she can't yell in the hallway
-Mary: tells her it's against the rules and asks her again to stop
-Carla: says no and continues to be noisy
-Mary: leaves her room in frustration
-Carla: follows her
-Carla: asks where they're going
-Mary: says she'll see
-Carla: pushes the issue
-Mary: makes the vaguely transphobic remark

It is far beyond my powers of comprehension how we should be rooting for Carla.

That was the comic that pushed me over the edge too. The most interesting thing about Dina was that she really wanted to be treated as an adult, but she kept getting treated as a child because of her...condition (let's be frank, it's probably autism, but Willis won't admit it, probably because of the whole 'hates doctors' thing). It was something rather unique in DoA, and it just killed me to see it get truncated because Becky needed a rebound.

>>85955218

>>
>>85961934
I think it's confirmed that Dina has autism.
But it's the weirdest, least realistic kind of autism I've ever seen at least. Autism isn't just retaining a childlike innocence into your later years.

>Seriously, what kind of artist just refuses to take any criticism ever?
A narcissist. We've been seeing them a lot over the past few years thanks to the Internet. Interestingly, it may be linked to the rise in numbers of SJW-types as well; it's only a theory, though.

>eternal and timeless.
That doesn't excuse the changing timeframe of the webcomic.
The comic started in 2010, which we're supposed to assume is the year it takes place, and yet throughout the story, 'topical' references are made to things like the Chick-fil-A homophobia scandal (happened in 2012) and a character is seen playing a 2DS (introduced in 2013).
>>
>>85962876
Well, the strip began in 2010 and left the gate immediately with a sliding timescale; it is 2010 in real-time and 2016 as well.

The flashback is supposedly set ten years ago or so, meaning that it is both 2000 and 2006. The Twin Towers are in a state of limbo, simultaneously existing and not existing at the same time.

according to willis:

>Dumbing of Age is not set in any particular year. I only say this because every time some pop culture reference shows up, someone is all “OH HEY HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE AREN’T WE STILL IN 2010???” Nope, sorry, we ain’t! The comic moves slow, but it operates on comic book time. This webcomic is not gradually going to become a period piece. Just assume the strip is always set in whatever year it is right now.

in other words: 'I'm a lazy fuck who can't be bothered to keep it set in a certain time so I'm going to throw in all of the current references I want and get away with it.'

>with both sides being kinda shitty

I don't think Mary was being shitty at all, at least not until she--sigh--misgendered Carla. First she asked Carla to be quiet. Then she said what Carla was doing was against the rules. Then she laid down in the hallway, at risk to herself, in order to stop Carla. Then, FINALLY, she retaliated in a "wacky" way with the glue (which, mind you, is no more cartoonishly annoying than what Carla got up to). THEN Carla started stomping outside of her room and taunting her some more. THEN, finally, Mary snapped and actually lobbed an insult she knew would hurt Carla terribly.

It still drives me insane that I'm supposed to sympathize with Carla, Carla only, and not criticize the bitch for antagonizing Mary so much in the first place. Trans people get enough shit just for being trans, it's astonishingly poor writing to make a wildly unsympathetic character and then use "but they're trans!" as a get out of jail free card.

God I hate Carla so fucking much. At least Becky's got an obligatory tragic past. Carla had rich parents who had no problem with her transition and made her the toys she couldn't buy.
>>
>>85956202

Another commenter, after I pointed out this string of strips makes Carla look completely unsympathetic, not more, said that trans people are always expected to act like perfect angels or else they deserve to be humiliated.

I pointed out in response that you don't need to make a trans character relentlessly taunt and torment someone to make them step out of line enough to get misgendered and in fact by doing so for an entire series of strips you give the audience license to wonder if doing so was maybe a liiiittle bit justified.

I was banned shortly thereafter.

I was more talking about them both being implicit in escalating the situation, but you're right. Although confrontation is often considered bad, there's absolutely nothing wrong with confronting someone who is breaking the rules and genuinely disrupting you. And the way the comic presents things, she is genuinely disrupted by the noise. The only thing I would consider wrong from an objective point is Mary damaging Carla's property, and that's like the 4th thing she does and like 1 of 7 things she tries before the trans comment. The first 3 are not only right, because she's standing up for herself and the rules, they're also really restrained for Mary.

Willis basically did a bait and switch with the trans comment by making Mary more civil than she usually is. This ended up making her genuinely sympathetic. And rather than admit that he fucked up he's just gonna whine about it forever.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

There's also the fact that making an Asian character who's short, socially awkward and knows basically nothing about sex is kind of racist.

Willis relies more on stereotypes than you'd think, and you'd think that more people would call him out on that
>>
>>85969891
I'm just trying to figure out of that's a big-headed dude or a big-headed ugly woman?
>>
>>85970717
Yeah, you'd think someone would have noticed the huge stereotype there.

The main black guy is tall and broad-shouldered.

The Gender Studies teacher is a lesbian.

The math TA wears a bow tie.

The black girl is sassy and independent.

The primary lesbian is loud and verging on butch.

And that's to say nothing of the stereotypes surrounding Sal.

Btw, has anyone actually (recently) met someone under the age of 30 named Sally?
>>
>>85971523
Yea, I went to school with a girl who's about 26 named Sally. Names tend to follow a cycle of popularity based on people naming children after grandparents/great-grandparents.

>>
>>85971523
Eh, Sarah's more 'intrinsically cynical' than sassy and independent, but yeah, you get the drift.

There's also the fact that, despite his support of gay characters, he's pretty bad at writing them as human beings rather than 'my whole character is my sexuality'. You have Leslie, who's in gender studies and only plotline concerns fucking a hot Republican woman; Becky, who's Becky; Daisy, who's thirsty; and Ethan, whose whole plotline is based around how comfortable he is with his gayness. And when you get to the bi characters, Billie and Ruth have been tied up in their relationship for most of the comic, Danny hasn't done much after realizing he's bi besides coming out to Ethan, and Dina's plotline got shafted as soon as she became Becky's rebound

Apparently, only straight people can have plotlines that don't revolve around who they want to fuck
>>
>>85971973
>Dina's plotline got shafted as soon as she became Becky's rebound
Her chapter could have been good if it didn't revolve around Becky.
>>
>>85972650
A lot of plots got shafted in favor of Becky.

Joyce's plot in particular now basically revolves around being Becky's yes-man and keeping her happy.
>>
>>85973096
It's sad that so much of Joyce's plot is focused through Becky's eyes. I'm honestly surprised he's still pretending Joyce is the main character.

A little under an hour left to go.
Since Willis implied that this series of flashbacks will last at least a week, we can assume that we won't be snapping back to reality any time soon.

I predict the next strip involves Sal leaving the principal's office only to run into Leland who is outside. Aware of his White Privilege™ and his invincibility in the eyes of the principal, he laughs at Sal's misfortune. Sal responds by punching Leland in the face, possibly knocking out a tooth. I'm sure Sal also delivers a stinging one-liner, since Willis needs to include a punchline in his strips lest he literally become "Funky Winkerbean".

Willis usually just draws Sal with her clothes showing off parts of her body in exchange for really drawing her with that much of a figure. And then Sal takes her top off and it's like whoa, is that even the same character? It makes me think that he leans on short stacks, because the sexy curves are exaggerated and easy to depict compared to thinner sexy curves.

Does Willis just want to throttle someone anytime he gets insulted IRL? I know we're all thin-skinned assholes on the internet, but...this dude has made a serialized webcomic where his "good" characters use brutal violence to get back at his "bad" characters all the time.

Willis draws kids as small adults. Or he just draws adults as large children.
And yeah, it's supposed to be Ten Years Ago, I think.

Also, if anybody cares to know, we appear to be at least one to one-and-one-half weeks deep into flashbacks; the preview panels that Willis posts to Tumblr don't show a return to the current time until September 14th.

>>
How is Marcie able to trespass on school grounds without her and her parents getting arrested for truancy and child endangerment?
>>
>>85979101
Man the school administrators are mostly right on this. If a stray kid wanders onto a different school's playground, what happens afterwards is on her. The school won't take responsibility for unknown children. They can maybe punish Leland for violence if, but not if they don't witness it.
>>

>>
>>85980067
Depends how many kids are on the playground. If all of your students are accounted for, you pretty much just assume everyone else is from different classes.

Once there's a problem, like in the strip, you can remember their face and keep them out.
>>
>>85980178
You're right, it is probably more difficult to mind all the kids in most places. My HS class was about 100 people and was the biggest in the school's history.
>>
>>85980142
Yeah. This makes sense to me but it does remind me of the fucking scary tumblr mentality that "some people deserve to be attacked and harmed". For a place that pretends it's all peace and love I've never seen such a group of people quite as willing to justify violence and horrible acts as tumblr.

>>85980693

lemme just write this down before i forget because it's almost 1am where i am, but i think i have an idea for how to salvage the whole sal/leland thing that i'm certain is going to be ruined within a month since willis can't write a competent plot to save his skin

but the thing about the current flashback is that i'm sure that leland will never return to the story and that his only role in the course of DOA is to serve as a temporary antagonist and White Privilege Incarnate and all that shit

Anyways, what I'm thinking is that Leland has to return, and that Sal has to run into him. The scenario I pictured involves perhaps the two running into each other in the laundry room of the dorm, since not only would it be an easy place for people to meet up randomly, but it serves as world-building in that people do their laundry AND that there are more people than just the main cast in the dorm building.

So Sal and Leland run into each other, and one recognizes the other somehow. "Hey, didn't we go to elementary school? Yeah, I think you tried to choke me out once. Man, I must have been a dick" or something like that. The idea will be that Sal will remember Leland and the shit he pulled, but Leland will have almost forgotten the event, an for the most part have changed for the better. Make him join some kind of civil rights club or become a homosexual, since there's clearly not enough in the building.

You can add in a sob story for Leland about having divorced and/or neglectful and/or abusive parents that shaped his schoolyard ways that he further overcame over the years outside of Sal's knowledge, but ultimately what Leland would serve as is a parallel to how Amber views Sal. If you want, maybe add in a short point where Leland asks Sal about the gloves that Sal wears all the time, and Amber could be down in the laundry room overhearing Sal's side of the events and how she's forgotten how it went down herself.

This sounded a lot better in my head. I'm try sleep again.

From what I've seen of Joyce, I think it was really out of character for her to punch Joe. Even in my most upset abusiveness (I'm a lot better now), I didn't go that far.

I'm a lot like Joyce. Honestly. I think the most I would have done is reprimand him, slap him if he continued after I asked him to stop, and then walk out after slapping him.

He's trying to make it about race, but I don't think anyone ever thought Marcy was anything but Robotnik-American, and even if she was and this kid kicked her fucking teeth in, the school isn't in the wrong protecting it's student in a fight and questioning why the fuck someone who wasn't a student was even there. If Marcy seriously had an issue with it her parents should've involved the police, and if Sal had an issue with that not happening she should've gone after Marcy's parents and told them to do so. Fucking illegal immigrants don't not call the police when important shit happens, that's not a thing. I feel like Willis might be a little too white bread to be stepping into this deep as fuck ocean of racism he thinks he can wade into. I really hope he drowns doing this and has to apologize.
Also, I really hate that saying someone is "illegal" has become some kind of fucking slur. I grew up in a predominately Mexican area and was fucking raised by Mexicans. Most illegals refer to themselves as illegals. And it isn't wrong, if they immigrated illegally, they are illegal aliens. You could maybe argue that calling them straight up "illegals" isn't really correct, but saying illegal alien sure as fucking shit shouldn't be a slur, it's a real ass legal term.

We all know we're about to get a near identical comic to the one where Sal is sitting in the office and it's just someone protecting the boy again, yeah? And there's going to be some kind of implied racism, but Sal attacked this kid out of left fucking field. She was in the wrong.

Just gonna interject here and say: I'm married to a Filipino woman. If anything I'm kind of relying on her for cash right now and it's absolutely killing me. They are not, in my experience, ever after your money as a race. People of any race can scam money off of people who're too loose with it.
Did you maybe go to the actual Philippines where everyone is poor and expect to fall in love and not get scam? Because that's just dumb.

yeah...anon?

philipino hate is a meme, same with jew/mexican/any racial hate on 4chan ever

She should have just followed him home to kick his ass instead of doing it on school property.

They probably won't be outspoken about it if they even care in the first place. Maybe the seeds of discontent would be sown with a few and make them leave after a few months of seeing it happening over and over again, but I doubt anyone would actually say anything about it in fear of being banned.
>>
>>85984032
Willis is probably afraid of showing a minority using underhandedness or cunning to fuck over a bad guy without suffering consequences.

That would remove her victim status.
>>
>>85981422
>I like it. That would be a really great addition to the comic since it would round out the issues nicely. Good idea. I wish Willis were smart enough to do something like that.
Thanks.

It ultimately ties into one of my larger gripes about DOA: The lack of a fleshed out world. For the most part, all we've ever seen are the lives of a certain subsection of students living in a single wing of one dormitory floor... on a campus of 48,000-plus students. The comic feels empty for this reason.

Like, there was a gunman sighted on a 48k-person campus, and yet it wasn't reported to the cops until the first gunshot had been fired? An attempted rapist was beaten with a baseball bat at a crowded party and managed to get away silently? And I'm pretty sure that Amazi-Girl is (or was) treated as a myth for the longest time as well because she operated at night, since nobody is out at night on a college campus.

The world of DoA is so goddamn small, and Willis has gone about the wrong way trying to make it seem bigger. More locations isn't what you need. IF you want to develop a world, develop its people. Even if there's a minor character we never meet again, and even if you don't actually touch upon the following when they're featured, give them more than two character traits, or at least some form of a backstory and/or origin.

It's the little things, goddammit.

Of all the bullshit Sal has pulled, this is probably the most forgivable, considering Marcie could have gotten seriously injured on the rebar or concrete

Two more comics.

Also Annabeth and Jack will have there own plot that isn't a parody of anything from DoA, just a neat idea I have. So yeah, seperating this comic a liiiiittle bit more from DoA.

That's kind of fucked, innit?

I'm glad you're okay with my impromptu proofreading, but you do need to start doing it yourself because, let's face it, part of being a creator is making sure you're doing it right.

I kind of feel like what I did, rambling on about a storyline that's sure not to happen, is how we can prove that DoA is chock full of lost potential. It could almost be a writing exercise: Take a storyline in DoA, and expand upon how it could have gone in a different direction that would have served to better develop the world, its characters, and their relationships.

Why the fuck is there a giant pit full of exposed rebar just lying around a school playground?

And I mean the in-universe reason, not the "Willis realized that shoving a girl wasn't a good enough reason to warrant Sal putting a boy in a sleeper hold so he upped the danger factor" reason.

It makes it seem like they are at a shitty public school in a bad neighborhood and makes the principal's reaction even less believable.
>>
>>85991736
Yeah, that seems to be a problem that Willis has. If a character is irredeemable once, they become irredeemable forever.

It's as if Willis hates change. I dunno, I could easily be wrong.

Ugh. You're probably right.

I understand that racism and stuff are important topics, but Willis's fans just don't get it. It's kind of sad.
>>
>>85995632
Willis himself barely, if at, all gets it either. That's the problem. He's breeding ignorance with his own ignorance.
>>
>>85996714

Luckily, ideology such as this follows similar lines as genetics, in which incestuous and insular thinking is ultimately unstable and doomed to degeneration.

Unluckily, it creates malformed nuts who cause their own sort of damage before they eventually break down.
>>
>>85996714
And he's actually breeding. He has twins.
>>
>>85956836
>>85959077

Not only that, I'm 95% sure his characters have used "retarded" MULTIPLE times in an "ableist" manner before.
>>
>>85997509
And they'll most likely hate him unless he learns to mellow out.

Imagine if they were fraternal.
Oh, the things that Willis would have told them about incest.
