This is the first Nova issue I've read in a while. I started with Annihilation and pulled out during either Duggan or the guy who preceded (succeeded?) him.

I got to say I liked it, especially in comparison to Bendis Guardians, although it does seem to have a few gaps in continuity (didn't Sam know Richard Rider was Nova Prime?). Should have read Abnett's book before it was canceled, feelsbadman.

As a massive Nextwave fan, I'm fairly certain nobody had any illusions about there being another iteration of Nextwave. Hell, back in the day we'd come to terms with the fact that Marvel editorial would never make it canon. Everything that's happened afterwards (the resurgence of Elsa, Monica wearing the duster and remembering Broccoli Men, the Beyond Corporation in Ultimates, The Captain popping up in Nova #9 just to shit on Civil War II) is just icing on the cake. Frankly, we're lucky to have seen what we have so far and I don't doubt that whatever's coming down the line will be great. My fingers are crossed for The Captain reconnecting with Nova to discover the origins of his powers since he accidentally killed the aliens who gave them to him.

Seriously, I love Nextwave. I'm cosplaying as The Captain at DragonCon this weekend. I'm going to get drunk and walk around carrying a sign that says "BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS LICKS GOATS"

I actually found Loeb's stuff bearable, but the two authors who came after him really did catch my interest. I found Sam's story to be reminiscent of an 80's kid-action/adventure story, kind of like Strange Tales now that I think about it.

I did like how they characterized Sam's relationship with Nova's legacy and the watcher, but my experience is limited from right before Thanos Imperative.

Maybe the book just needs to grow on you, for the longest time Sam wasn't clicking with me because I just wanted to read more follow up with Dick Rider. I came around, but not everybody may, and it sounds like you don't even dislike the character in other books (or maybe he just clicked for you in a team setting?).

Honestly, I generally agree. Ellis's writing is so distinct, especially in Nextwave. I won't lie that a part of me is hopeful that there's a writer who can capture that same style while also making it fresh and unique.

I'm curious about what members people would like to see in a new Nextwave team. The only thing I know for sure is that I'd want The Captain as the new team leader and he'd spend most of his time bitching about how Monica hit the big leagues.

I'm no industry insider, but I'm guessing that not only counts mainline books distributed under the 616 Marvel IP but also reprints, collections, and other books put out which do not fall under the Marvel brand of comic book.

This is more of an example from DC, but from the 40's through 60's DC put out a ton of romance books which were not branded as being "DC" because they were not superhero stories. They were still published by them and overseen by the same editorial personnel.

DM Sales are irrelevant to a publisher. All that matters is retailer orders, because they're going to get the money regardless. If a LCS orders 10 copies of Civil War II, but only actually sell 5 of them, then Marvel would still be getting 10 issues worth of sales even if the LCS is stuck with 5 unsold issues. That's why incentive variant covers exist. "You must order 20 copies of this comic, to get 1 variant cover of this other comic" means that if a LCS wants that 1 variant cover, Marvel would essentially be getting 21 issues worth of sales even if the LCS ends up just throwing those 20 copies in the dollar bin immediately and only wanted the variant cover (which most LCS will then proceed to sell for a few hundred bucks to offset the sunk cost of all those issues of other comics they had to order.)

Also, publishers get non-DM sales directly even if that info isn't publicly available.
