Welcome back Anons. Yesterday, we took a break from Jessica Jones to read about the adventures of Iron Fist and one of the various preteen girls that never get mentioned after the story is over. Today, we see what Jessica got into after finally leaving the MAX line.
Plus side? No Gaydos, so let's see if there's any repeated panels by someone else.
Is it odd that, given that it's Hell's Kitchen, I assume "Yakuza" to be the nice way of saying "fucking ninjas"?
Wow, three panels and not a single line of dialogue.
>>85910663
This is the series with the not-Lois Lane who ends up getting killed, right?
>>85910728
Bagley saved Bendis' ass time after time during their USM run. He straight out avoided his guidelines and wen't by his own pace. Same thing with Capullo and Snyder on Batman.
Whoops, spoke too soon!
>>85910770
I think that happens next issue? At least it's this arc. It's not exactly a selling point of the series.
>>85910782
That explains so much about why USM is my favorite Bendis series.
>>85910728
On the other side, it must've been so weird to see nonGaydos Jessica as the new standard for the first time for readers back then. And Bagley is so completely different from him that it's even weirder.
>>85910839
Yeah, I know, it's just that it's literally all I know this series from.
>>85910878
There's three major artists for the series, I believe. At the end, we can compare which artist was better.
I think this is the closest we get to Bendis remembering continuity. Two arcs later, and he remembers that Jessica saved JJ's sort of daughter from being used as a drug farm.
>>85910895
I checked, it's THIS arc.
This is the kind of stuff I'd expect from Ultimate JJ, and I mean that in a good way.
Does repeating "all day" as a question count as Bendis-speak? Given the next sentence, it seems more like he's genuinely surprised that the guy just LEFT a damn body in the lake for an hour.
>"You're not mad at me for not giving up Daredevil's secret identity even though I knew?"
>"I will resent you for it until the day you die."
Only in comics can someone casually go "fly-by".
No, no. Apparently Not-Lois is already dead.
There's really no reason for Spidey to be on the covers on all these books besides trying to sneak in sales.
>>85911100
Nah, it's a genuine reaction.
So yeah, I actually didn't make the Lois Lane connection until that anon mentioned it.
Because Bendis had enough self awareness to know that massive amounts of text blocking the pages were a problem at the time, he moved it all to the side.
Rather than use LESS text.
>>85911227
how is she lois lane? i dont see it
As opposed to know, where he's gotten enough people telling him he's a good writer that he'll do it anyway.
... Lady, you KNOW you work for JJ, right? The man who has basically made a living shitting on superheroes?
>>85911305
Terri (Hatcher)
(Margot) Kidder
>>85911305
At the end of this issue, it seems like someone who doesn't like Lois, decided to shit on the character, while not actually knowing anything about her.
>>85910782
i can´t believe the same immonen who drew ultimate spiderman also drew that boring ass x men run, i dunno if it was because bendis started to make his scripts differently but everything he´s done since has been a slog to read narratively speaking, just compare the first issues of ultimate peter to the first issues of miles, it got so fucking boring
>>85911379
Yeah, and that too.
Lois And Clark and the Reeve movies.
I remember around this time Jessica Jones just showed up in all sorts of comics, like that time she popped in on the Young Avengers while she was almost due and gave them a pep talk.
>>85911441
THAT was a weird cameo, since that was the only relatively major appearance she had that wasn't by Bendis.
>>85911021
ultimate J.J has one of the best character arcs in all of ultimate spiderman
... Is Vulture not one of the more well-known Spidey villains? I mean, he's been around for a while. It's not like he's the Kangaroo or something.
Oh, neat.
>>85911530
>>85911551
shit, i forgot this is 616, i was gonna say that it was because the ultimate vulture was introduced later, maybe bendis mixed them up, i´m pretty sure everybody knows 616 vulture
>"someone who we believe to be the felon known as the Vulture"
He's an old man in a green bird costume who's flying. How many other people fit that description in the Marvel Universe?
>>85910839
>My man!
Spidey, please move your right knee before making Viagra jokes.
I don't know this perfectly, but at this time, I'm pretty sure Osborn is still publicly believed to be a good guy. I haven't read much pre-JMS Spidey (once they get the constant mixing spin-off books it becomes a nightmare to keep up with), but I think Osborn being a gibbering madman doesn't become common knowledge yet.
>>85911530
Its Bendis Anon. This is the guy who made it look like Captain Britain was some upcoming amateur superhero not worth contacting when the badoons invaded London in his GoTG issue.
This is the guy who has completely shat on speedball in all his comics written by him, even tho Speedball basically started the same way spidey did and was part of a very competent team.
>>85911699
EVERYONE shits on Speedball though, and I don't get why. Fucking Quesada was shitting on him, remember? That's why he okay'd Penance.
I admit, I don't know much about office politics, but why would an NDO keep you from mentioning unrelated people to you vanishing? It's not like YOUR the one making them vanish, they already work for Osborn.
... Oh no, she's talking to Stormin' Norman personally.
Good news, she wasn't, just his receptionist. Bad news? Now she has a face-to-face meeting.
>>85911730
Well not everyone dude, tons of marvel writers have tried to revive the new warriors with speedball included. I think Slott (back when he was good), Yost, Ewing and Gage probably love the new warriors. In my experience only Millar or Bendis shat on him a lot and those were the biggest mainstream writers of Marvel.
I never liked the warriors or speedball but even for me their treatment of those guys was down right atrocious.
Wow, I would not have guessed that BENDIS would know about the time Osborn tried to take over the Bugle.
Yeah, I could see some versions of Lois trying this.
All right Anons, I want you to look at the first panel in the last page, and then the 7th panel of THIS page. See if you see anything odd.
And I just realized Osborn doesn't have his cornrows.
>>85911855
Bendis is a continuity whore when it suits him Anon. He genuinely doesn't care if he contradicts old stuff in the name of the story HE is wanting to tell. He is insufferable twat like that.
A lot of his early haters hated him because he was so smug about it. Now its cool to hate him but for entirely different reasons.
I mean this is the guy who kept tons of notes of how marvel universe would be fundamentally altered if Hank Pym was removed from the equation. Of course those notes became worthless because he didn't do jack shit in age of ultron but whatever, Bendis does what he pleases.
Okay Anons, can you see what I was referring to? Right here you can see what I was referring to as well.
>>85911989
oh he got goblin eyes
>>85911989
Bendis has issues.
>>85911965
Anon, there's people who can point out that examples of Bendis forgetting HIS OWN continuity.
>>85912031
Well YES, but I was referring to >>85912027 where his eyes briefly go Green.
I like to think JJ genuinely feels bad for the last thing he said to her basically being chewing her out for something HE didn't like.
>>85912040
But thats the thing, he contradicts them because he wants to tell the story HIS way. Which includes contradicting his own shit multiple times.
I swear there was an interview where someone called him out on it and Bendis just answered the point is he is writing comics as entertainment. If you were entertained then does it matter?
Yeah, I'm not a fan of how Bagley draws Luke.
>>85912064
yea that's what i meant
Remember, they've BOTH had issues with JJ.
And then Bendis spent the better part of a decade TRYING to make him famous anyway.
And now you know the source of the most famous panels in The Pulse.
And unlike his X-Men, there's literally NO reason for Luke to refer to Danny by his full name.
I need to read more stuff with the cops are the main characters, because I've seen way too much stuff where the cops are just over-aggressive assholes.
How would you be able to tell it's a guy if there's no DNA? Just size? It can't be strength, since you live in a setting where plenty of women have super strength.
>>85912426
Gotham Central?
I forget, when did Tony reveal his secret identity the second time? I know he did it before, but then he forced the entire world to forget it, and we're still supposed to think he's the good guy.
>"You fly?"
>"Badly."
Given the flashbacks we got in Alias, I can only assume she's just out of practice. We have no idea how strong she could be if she actually, you know, worked out.
So what's Stiltman been up to, lately? I haven't seen him since Waid's Daredevil.
>>85912552
I mean at least before Civil War.
>>85912518
I'll probably read that once I can afford the Omni.
>>85912552
I thought he just made Iron Man and Tony appear together at the same time or something to ward of suspicion.
The entire world to forget thing is a recent thing started by Peter and continued by Daredevil I guess.
Also he revealed his identity to the president in Civil War. It was part of the package deal for the registration act.
>>85912727
He used to just tell people that Iron Man was his bodyguard. At one point, he publically revealed who he was, but then he did a OMD on his own.
When I mentioned that Osborn's identity as the Goblin wasn't common knowledge? Urich knows. Wrote a book on it once, but Osborn sued him for it.
Welp, at least there's THAT mystery.
This was in the middle of JMS's run, so Peter didn't work for JJ at the time, and hasn't for a long time.
>>85912771
>The identity of Iron Man was publicly revealed when Tony donned his suit to save a dog from being run over. This was then later covered up by Stark claiming to have given up the suit with someone else now inside. He then proceeded to re-reveal his identity as part of his support towards the Superhuman Registration Act.
Not a mindwipe like OMD but close enough I'd say.
>>85911389
>it seems like someone who doesn't like Lois, decided to shit on the character, while not actually knowing anything about her
That's my Bendis!
>>85912908
All I can find to bring up what I'm referring to is something Mentallo was using.
And now we see what early Bendis has in mind about their kid.
Yeah, she ended up quite a bit darker than that in the end.
>>85913153
>mfw Jessica and Danielle have the exact same face
>"WHAT'S MY NAME?!"
In a few months, we'll see a much more awesome version of this scene.
>>85913188
Given that Luke even notices he's not in the dream, it's entirely possible that Danielle is just supposed to be "little Jessica" in her dream.
Or Bagley just has a sameface problem. Take your pick.
When he says that Peter told Ben he knows who Daredevil is, he's referencing something from Bendis's Daredevil. When JJ chewed everyone out for not getting the story of who Daredevil is, Ben tried to defend Matt by saying that the story's wrong and Matt ISN'T Daredevil, because he knows who Daredevil is, and it isn't Murdock, Peter just HAPPENS to be nearby, and says the same thing.
>"He ruined my professional life!"
>"You want to play the game of who's life Osborn has fucked up? Let's start with the girlfriend he threw off a bridge in front of me, and don't even get started on the fucking clones!"
And now Ben asks the obvious question.
>"Week after I found out about Matt, his crazy ex-girlfriend stabbed me through the heart."
If you haven't read Miller's Daredevil, you deserve to.
Have you ever gone a few days without talking to a friend, and realized that you genuinely wouldn't know if they died?
So how often does Robbie appear in Spidey adaptations? I know JJ appears in almost every one except Amazing, but I can't remember Robbie getting many appearances.
>"You smell smoke?"
Oh, time for shit to get wacky!
>>85911897
Osborn's eyes going green? They're brown earlier on the same page so it must be intentional.
Welp, they're all dead.
>>85913597
Oh it's DEFINITELY intentional. I just didn't want to say anything, and see if someone else could spot it.
Dun dun dun!
All right Anons, last issue for today!
>>85913527
He is JJ's right hand man in most appearances. So just as many if not the same amount but usually in the background with no speaking role.
>>85912158
He's got a point.
>>85913692
It's a bummer that's ALL he's relegated to, since most adaptations rarely have him as good of a person in the Ultimate Universe, so he kind of needs Robbie to show off his better nature.
Uh, where'd Ben go?
This first arc is basically the only memorable part of this series, and the only two bits I remember about the series take place in THIS issue.
>>85913730
He would, if the stories WERE entertaining most of the time. I nitpick for the sake of something to say, but that's because I'm lucky and I don't have to post the REALLY bad Bendis shit.
Remember when the Goblin could shoot electricity from his hands?
That's not nitpicking by the way, he actually COULD do that in the earlier comics, although most of the time it's just from his fingers. Even Spectacular Spider-Man let him do it.
Now, he's just ALL pumpkin bombs.
Yeah, this is basically the most badass Jessica Jones has ever been in the decade she's been. Like actually badass, not just threatening.
I mean, it didn't last long, but she fucking smacked the Green Goblin with his own glider, after flying fast enough to catch him on the damn thing. Imagine what she could do if she actually, you know, worked out a bit.
Wow, that pregnancy didn't last long.
>"This attack happened at Oscorp?"
>"Yes."
>"I own stock in Oscorp..."
>"Well, not to be technical, but you have the insides to match. You're one tough broad."
Wow, that'd be handy to know ahead of time.
>>85913780
>Aaagghh!! My baby!! My baby!! I'm PREGNANT!! HE KILLED MY BABY!! Oh God!!! He killed my baby!!
http://www.i-mockery.com/comics/longbox6/
>that last panel face
>>85914040
What the fuck kind of doctor calls his patient a "broad"
>>85914084
Based on how he writes Ben Grimm, I feel like that's a thing people genuinely say.
For some reason, Bendis writes Osborn as especially crazy.
And this is the OTHER bit from this series I remember.
>>85913816
I'm imagining Norman Osborn beating off to the fantasy of choking Urich.
>sees Spider-Man
>immediately goes for the bombs and green suit
Ben-diss?
Qui est ce Bendis?
>"Unbreakable skin."
>"You need unbreakable pants."
Remember, we discovered in the 90's Cage series that Luke CAN make clothes unbreakable.
>>85914190
He can't always jerk it to murdering Peter.
Plus side, post OMD, now that he doesn't know who Spider-Man is, he can fantasize murdering Peter Parker AND Spider-Man.
This isn't even the first time that the Norman Osborn is beaten while Spider-Man just stands to the side.
>>85914041
You can tell that was made ten years ago, because Miles isn't on that list of characters Bendis loves, but HAWKEYE is.
You know who I just noticed hasn't shown up yet?
The "I'm not a faggot dad!" Anon.
And that's it for today Anons. See you tomorrow, where we read the Bendis Secret War event!
Thanks, OP. This was fun.
>>85914508
Any time, Anon.
>>85914355
it seems like the thesis is predicated on usage = love and not what happens to them. which Bendis sells but i dont totally but from him.
anyway he clearly hates hawkeye cause dude wasn't hawkeye again until like fraction
>>85914396
>Bugle cover references the classic "half Parker/half Spider-Man" thing
neat.
I really enjoyed this OP. Top points old chap!
>>85911989
Bendis is a sick fuck who gets off on women suffering. He's literally a /co/mrade who made it into Marvel.
>>85911285
He did this sometimes in Alias too.
>>85911897
It's intentional, like a flash of the Green Goblin personality.
>>85910663
>feet
who thought this was a good idea?
>>85912611
I think it's mental. She was still pretty down through most of Alias, and all of the scenes shown in flashbacks where she flew, it was a completely joyous, freeing experience. Later once she's doing better personally and she starts wearing the Jewel costume and working with the Avengers, she can fly ok again.
Like POTTERY.
>>85916669
Oh, wait until New Avengers and Tigra.
>>85913816
*RUMP*
>>85918138
That's what I'm talking about, yeah. Like I said, Bendis is sick in the head.
>>85910663
>Today, we see what Jessica got into after finally leaving the MAX line.
Is it "become a pointless hanger on to the Avengers?"
>>85910982
Who the fuck formatted that first framed paper? That thing is a fucking disaster.
I actually really like Pulse, more than Alias, even though I have copies of both. Watching Luke beat the shit out of Osborn was a cathartic experience. I hate that smug fuck.
Technically, the Pulse trade goes all the way up to the birth, but I suppose it makes sense to show what got Luke into trouble in the first place.
Danny is such a dick to Jessica though, to the point of going against what Luke would want. I have no idea why the writers thought that was a good idea. He's usually pretty likable.
>>85911041
Not having Ben Urich at the Bugle in a MCU was a suboptimal.
>>85911389
>Bendis doesn't read comic books
Yeah, that tracks.
>>85911687
I miss when Norman Osborn was a mostly chestless corpse.
>>85919222
No, that's what she became after this. Around now, they're still trying to convince people she'll stick around.
>>85919702
She will, if only because of the MCU.
She was already 'popular' enough for Bendis to justify keeping her around and in some prominent books, even if it was as a side character. Alias and Pulse did well. Now? She's in the top twenty most recognizable MCU heroes thanks to how well received her Netflix show was. She's one of, what, five prominent female heroines? And has the biggest role of all of them, with her own show? (Widow, Wanda, Jessica or Skye are probably equally known, and then Wasp and maybe Carter.) We'll have to wait for Captain Marvel and see if Carol can pull off her own solo as to whether she stays the only female hero in a solid solo MCU product.
Her ongoing will be here to stay, I imagine.
>>85911963
Bagley was too used to drawing normal ass hair Ultimate Norman.
>>85912064
Wait, is Bob Hope one of New York's most powerful people?
>>85912158
>If you were entertained then does it matter?
And if I'm not entertained, as I almost always am not with Bendis writing, but his sloppy continuity craps up something I was enjoying?
What then?
>>85912179
Don't worry, we'll get worse, as Luke degenerates into Generic Black Man.
>>85912643
>So what's Stiltman been up to, lately?
Hopefully, getting ready to save the day by fighting Captain Hydra's Evilvengers next year.
>>85913259
>Peter, Spider-Man was Germany when Ned Leeds was murdered. He's never around when you aren't around, except for that time your cousin, who I'm pretty sure was your clone, stayed here when you moved to Portland.
>>85913527
90s cartoon and Raimi-Man both have him.
>>85913662
Can I just take a second here and complain about Ultimate Goblin and the fact that it's not at all goblin-y in any way?
616 Green Goblin is a goofy Silver Age design... but it fits the name well, and has seen some good adaptations to the times to make it a bit less outwardly silly without making it a fire barfing Hulk.
>>85920808
So, thoughts on the more armored Goblin costumes?
>>85913875
Pfft. He did actually kill Peter's baby, though.
>>85914222
Well, at least he's losing shirts again, even if they aren't bulk bought golden silk.
>>85919357
hey spiderman hasnt happened yet
they can contradict netflix shit allday and it will be cannon as mons meg
>>85912158
Yeah, remember that time Pete had two 16th birthdays?
>>85914210
"Myy Nayme Is Joey Jojo, who iys thyis bendydyis? Sounds lyke a handsome fellow dont you think? Thats what I think! That this bendydidios has such a cool name and is very strong and powerful, as a comic creator"
>>85922060
90's shit, didn't happen because Pete and MJ weren't married. Though they stayed together through all of Kraven's Last Hunt, Venom, The Clone Saga, and John Bryne and a fat man trying to kill MJ is the straw that breaks the camel's back.
