Who else got their rejection letters today?
>OP was the only who got rejected
>>85897760
What did you apply for?
Show us what you got, OP. Some of us would be interested in reading it.
>>85900539
Its write there in the text.
Basically DC had open applications for writers and artists
>>85897760
Good on you for trying, hope you have more success in future. Don't give up!
>tfw you can't write
>tfw you can't draw
I thought one of the requirements was having already published work. So what have you written before, OP?
I bet Wil Wheaton got in before you
>>85897760
DC's development workshop required writers with pre-published work. Have you had any published work before?
>>85901364
>>tfw you can't write
anyone can write, just make a list of things that you like in stories, find out why you like them, then learn about writting structure and all that shit and then just try to write a story that you think you would like while also not making the whole thing wankfest
>>85901689
I just reread the thing and it doesn't say published work is required, but that you may include up to two published samples. You still need to submit your resume though and if you don't have at least one published thing on there I highly doubt they'd bother reading the rest of the application.
>>85901364
>tfw you can write
>tfw you can't draw
I've got stories upon stories with no real way to put them out there.
>>85901319
>write there in the text.
No wonder you got rejected.
>>85901426
Not OP but their "published" qualification was pretty weak. Basically posting on your own blog counted.
>>85901988
They won't hire some shmuck who's never worked in the publishing industry though.
>>85902020
Yeah but he asked as if it had to be something known to even submit. Or at least that's how I read it.
Based on the first spotlight on the new creators it definitely seems like they mostly skew with already famous people:
NEW TALENT SHOWCASE #1
Written by VITA AYALA, EMMA BEEBY, JOELLE JONES, HENA KHAN, MICHAL MCMILLIAN, MICHAEL MORECI, ERICA SCHULTZ, CHRIS SEBELA and ADAM SMITH
Art by BARNABY BAGENDA, JUAN FERREYRA, SONNY LIEW, DAVID MESSINA, KHARY RANDOLPH and more
I had a letter of recommendation from a person who's worked on DC books for decades, and I still got rejected. Bummer. I wish it hadn't been a form letter so I could know what to do better next time.
... well, only he who does not try is exempt from failure. Back to work on the webcomic and stuff. Good luck out there, anons!
>>85902096
I don't know who any of those people are. Except for Randolph I guess.
>>85902096
The thing hasn't even happened yet, I don't think those are people who were accepted.
>>85901938
I'm halfway decent at art and I can't write worth a shit so I'm stuck worrying about putting stories together and never actually finish anything and I want to kill myself for being a shit failure so iktf

How do you think new people get a start in the industry?

Nepotism and cronyism.

>>85902339
"A letter of recommendation from a person who's worked on DC books for decades" could refer to the guy who presses print for all we know.
If it were truly a big name trying to get anon a job, they would bypass this application bullshit altogether.
>>85902339
The thing is, if there's even one schlub in the industry who has more of an "in" than Anon, that's out of his control.

Nigga, everything is derivative. Yet there are as many interpretations of something as there are people to see it. You know the path to creativity? Doing shit nobody's put together before.
Take your favorite genre, or plot. Now: what is a story element/direction you've always wanted to see from those stories, yet never gotten?
Write that. Write specifically to entertain you. If you enjoy derivative shit, then tons of people will enjoy your shit.

>>85903466
I hate myself sometimes too, chief. But that's all the more reason to improve yourself. So you don't have to spend all your time with someone you hate.
>Anyone on 4chan going big
>Even more as a writer
Just publish your own book instead.
>>85903485
I've been working on creating amateur comic books, maybe eventually getting something published on my own and then working my way up to working at DC and getting to do my dream projects, among other things.
But becoming a comic book writer, a well-known one even, just seems so ludicrously unlikely, to the extent that it's utterly impossible. Dreams only hurt you and crush you with disappointment when they don't happen in the end. Why hope and try to get my spirits up when I know it's not going to be something that will happen?
>>85903544
Honestly I think it's because we are so lazy that we spend so much time on this site instead of working.
When I wasn't browsing so often I was working harder.
>>85903553
All I'll say is that if you're doing this hoping to get rich and famous, you're in the wrong line of work.
Success in this field is measured in creating good work and finding artistic fulfillment. That's what you've gotta hope for. Plans, not dreams.
>>85903704
>All I'll say is that if you're doing this hoping to get rich and famous, you're in the wrong line of work.
It's not like it's all I've ever wanted. I've had stories in my head that I've been tossing around since I was in high school. It's something that I really want to do.
I mean, just because you want something doesn't mean you'll get it. I have to laugh at the narrative that says that if you really wanted something, it would be yours. Because that's not true. There's always going to be a loser. For anyone whose application DC actually accepts, there's going to be hundreds, if not thousands more that they'll reject. That's just the way the cookie crumbles and that's how it is anywhere you go. Some people just never 'win' is all.

Guys creativity is not a innate talent, it's a skill you can learn and practice to get better. Look up some creativity excercices and tips, and actually sit the fuck down to do something. Start small, not every story you come up with has to be your ultimate epic, but actually finish it, even if it sucks, you'll be becoming better just by doing it. I'd say also try different genres and keep in mind what your target demo is, you'll be fine.

And they'd get anon's work on fuck I don't know Dan DiDio's desk and it would be good, or as good as DC ever is, and they'd use anon.
Or
Anon would be so terrible that his friend would refuse to pass along anon's terrible work, because anon's friend doesn't want to fuck himself and have Dan DiDio or whoever stop taking him seriously.
I know the "everything is who you know" thing sounds like it must be the case - the writers you see "getting their start" haven't really just started, they've been around five, ten years getting published in shitter things, they've done competitions and placed first, they've blah blah whatever.
But it's simply not the case that most people get their jobs regardless of the quality of their work. You can't run a business that way. People have to want to buy what you're selling - that means you have to hire people who can write, who can hit deadlines, who can take criticism of their work and so on. Your buddy's buddy doesn't fill those criteria if he's really just looking to make some easy money.
Or to put it another way: DC Comics is part of DC Entertainment. DC Entertainment co-produces movies with Warner Bros. based on DC Comics characters. If nepotism and cronyism were all it took to get a writing gig, all DC movies would be written by DC writers, because the same figures are involved at all levels there. But what we're seeing is that in the majority of cases they're using people who've never written a comic book in their lives, because the studio doesn't want comic book writers - they want people who understand how to write for the screen, which is a different set of skills.
There may very well be a networking element to a lot of high-end jobs, but at that stage the candidate field is so small and the stakes so high that it's not really screwing anybody if they hire someone they know they can work with. The truth is, 99% of people who think they can write and enter these open sub things are just terrible.
>>85901364
>p. good at drawing

I'm still banking on "lost in the mail."
>>85901364
>love to draw
>suck at it
>want to make cool art people will enjoy
>keep trying
>it's still shit
Sometimes I wonder if I'm just wasting my time.
Have you guys tried not making comics?
>>85915727
>>85917535
I hope I don't sound like a fucking idiot, but where did you guys apply? DC's website? I would like to know for next year.
From now on, anyone who attacks DC will be accused of being a rejected loser.

Look Im no racist, i have a black friend, but...
>>85918550
You're not. It just takes a long, long time, man or grill. So long that by the time stuff starts to click you don't really having any feeling of a connection between all that practice you've done and the improvement on the page.
>>85901364
>be in school
>"I'd love to be in the comic industry"
>kinda busy with school
>"Tomorrow I'll start learning how to draw"
I'm 31 now and on a job I hate and consumes all my time/energy, is not too late for you who is reading this, if you wanna start learning how to draw, start NOW.
>>85901364
>Tfw can draw for good
>Tfw start writing just becuase
>Turns out I'm good
>Share some of what I write to my friends
>They like it even though I think is shit
>Decide to start writing something for my OC's
>Decide to check over how I am going
>Fuck! it's mostly shit. Feels like a fanfic on steroids about my fucking life
>Start to read again in general
>Turns out I'm still good
>Restructure a lot of things so my stories aren't so shitty now, yet I am still having the problem of the same main characters being mostly assholes or fucked up somehow
>Get a lot of interesting stuff but most of my stories have a lot of plotholes
>Get stuck so I'm unable to think or draw anything new because I feel done and I haven't done fucking nothing
I am 22, nearly half the point of sutfy on College and yet haven't done anything I dreamed would've achieved at this point in my life.
The only thing I have achieved in my life were two poems I wrote were published on some college book. And I cannot feel happy about it because I almost have no friends because I am a fucking asshole so a lot of people isn't so close anymore and those who I ended in good terms ar on other careers or I am just to pussyfied to actually talk to them.
Go ahead anons, tell me to drink bleach, I deserve it.
Huh, I might try this next year. What sucks for me is that people tell me that Im a decent writer yet I always hate my work. That and after college I've lost all enthusiasm to write creatively. How do I get my mojo back anons?
>>85919549
It's not too late for you either.
So they will throw out any submissions using their characters?
>>85921152
Well, I had a brief period of creavity because
1) I started to read or get interested on new things for me like Pre Vertigo/first years of Vertigo stories (Sandman's Dream Theater and Milligan's Shade) and a lot from Morrison, but in general, to read a lot again and
2) Choose to live a happy life, to be a better person so I feel better about myself and my life in general, wich worked fine for almost half year.
Hey, if shit like THIS can get published, who says your own shit can't?
>>85920924
Honestly, considering the entire industry is 30 and over in age, just keep going and you'll do great.
>>85921152
1 page a day every day.
>>85920924
You sound, honestly, like an unpleasant person. But you're still very young.
>>85921394
I am. I used to be an extremist and to overreact. Now I'm just cynical.
>tfw too disgusted with your own work to ever finish it
ITT: Self-pity
You people are pathetic.
>Tfw wanna make cartoons and can write but cant draw
what do i do
>>85921855
Hire someone who can draw and get financial support.
>>85921721
It's a writer thread. Not even /co/ respects them. What did you expect?
>>85921658
i had this issue making a short film screenplay for my first movie writing class and just butchered it and turned it from something serious to just absolute fucking madness and i barely wrote it correctly
I was high when I wrote it and handed it in so im pretty sure that's why I went from an A to a B
>>85902413
>>85921872
thanks
>>85902413
Oh god my sides, you really are stupid, huh?
>>85921721
There is NOTHING wrong with a bit of self-pitying. In complete honesty.
>>85922218
A bit?? You call that a BIT??
People here are acting like the fucking world just ended, it's astonishingly pitiful.
>>85921658
FUCK same here.
I almost just want to barrel through and finish something, even if it's going to be complete shit. I mean, I'm probably going to hate my work a year or two from now anyway, might as well complete a project now, even if it's going to come out like shit, right?
>>85903298
Sounds like you would be perfect for rebooting a cherished franchise of a few decades ago. Maybe Powerpuff Girls remake remake would be a good idea.
>>85921993
>>85922278

lets see if i can get something done tonightpray for me bros
>>85923244
Open your notebook or program of choice RIGHT NOW and draw or write something RIGHT NOW! GO, ANON! DO IT! DO IT, YOU FOOL!
>>85923293

If Bendis and Henderson can make it into mainstream comics, so can you.
>>85907167
Make some damn friends anon
>>85913419
I don't think you understand how to bait...
But I'll bite, the problem isn't that I can't read, it's that I can read.
But I mean... If you right as bad as you reed your probably really stoopid. And if it's all bait, that's real sad, and I just want you to know, you made me laugh... at you, like a douche laughs at a retard kinda way.
>sent pic related to Marvel
>now an artist on Hellcat
Living the dream, boys
>>85913419
Hahah, this guycan't tell if trolling or just retardedprobably both
>>85926403
Watch out, he might "correct " you're riting grammar.
>>85926403
>>85926516
Are there words in that picture OP posted, yes or no?
Of course you want answer because this is how trolling on this shit board works now. None of you dumb fucks answer basic questions to prove you're not just shitposting.
You completely lose track of what the original argument was even about, because you ignore it on purpose just you can keep spamming "autist, retard, bait, LOLOLOL"
It's fucking stupid.
>But I mean... If you right as bad as you reed your probably really stoopid.
Soooo... am I supposed to correct these mistakes or what? I don't get the newfags form of trolling.
Yep, got mine. Didn't really think I'd make it in anyway. Still, was fun putting it all together.
>>85927069
it just went over your head...completely
>>85927069
Anon, you can't be this dense...
>>85912863
>That spoiler
I remember wanting to learn drawing just because there are multiple anons out there who want something done but never get it. I wanna be their hero,And draw all the porn they could ever want.
This thread is a rollercoaster, it's great, thanks.

>tfw you can write and can draw and it's pretty good but it's been 5 years since stopped and you have a panic attack the moment the pencil touches paper and you spent years thinking of this awsome story in your head slowly building this lore around it but you're such a coward that you rather leave it in your head because you're so used to the comfort of doing nothing but deep down you know it's eating you away
Fuck man, literally me too. I have a cartoon in my head that's so huge, so detailed, and probably hilarious and yet I continue to sit around, eat like a land whale, and fap. End my cycle of suffering /co/.
>>85927069
>>85901319
They're laughing at your spelling mistake. It's 'right' not 'write.'
>>85929589

Oh no, that other anon made a typo. It still doesn't change the fact that their text in that fucking post.
>>85927411
>>85927697
It's a "/co/ doesn't explain something but acts all smug like it gets something you don't even though it won't just say what the fuck it is and is doing this little shit act just to shit post" episode.
We have this episode every day.
Looks like I'm not even the person you guys even think you're replying too. Who's dense now? Who still insists there are no words in OPs fucking picture?
>>85930283

>>85907340
That is an ugly, UGLY baby.
Jesus Christ that kid's gonna grow up to be the fugliest motherfucker alive.
>>85930283
Anon, it's already been explained. We're making fun of that guy because he complained about being rejected for writing, and can't tell the difference between "write" and "right". That's all we're laughing about, good lord, man.
>>85930283
"It's write there in the text" is improper. Anon should have wrote "it's right there in the text". Were he a good writer he would know the difference. Also, I assume you mean "that *there's* text in that fucking post".
>>85903298
>>you can't write

Go eat some cereal, Geoff.
Just start and make something
Don't let your dreams be dreams.
That's what I'm doing and I think I'm making pretty OK progress

>>85901780
If you want to write, chances are you can. You've just gotta work at it and accept you're gonna be at it for a long time.
Seeing these threads always make me feel down.
I've been stuck in editor mode for too long helping other writers, it's been so long since I put in actual time/effort into my own writing. And now classes just started up again, so I have even less time.
Are there any other upcoming publisher submission contests out there?
>>85930283
>It's a "/co/ doesn't explain something but acts all smug like it gets something you don't even though it won't just say what the fuck it is and is doing this little shit act just to shit post" episode.

You deserve to be made fun of. A writer you are not.

We're gonna make it. Just apply your talents as you can.
did anyone who applied that "did not" get a message yesterday, get one today?
>>85907768
I suppose every hobby is a form of masturbation if you look at it from certain angles.
