Foolkiller was actually so much better than I thought it would be. There was almost nothing in it that didn't work.
>>
>that brings us back to the original point of all this, which is the idea that it's your job, as a reader, to save comics from cancellation. That if you don't buy a Previews catalog, research all of the comics coming out two months from now, and tell your retailer you want to buy one so that your retailer can purchase an extra copy from Marvel that month and Marvel can brag about it in a press release

>I propose a different hypothesis: it's Marvel's fucking fault when Marvel doesn't sell enough comics. It's Marvel's fault they didn't promote Nighthawk well enough to get retailers to buy enough copies of it. It's Marvel's fucking fault specialty shops are the only stores that buy Nighthawk comics in the first place. It's Marvel's fucking fault that instead of millions of people reading comics, there are less than 100,000. All of this is Marvel's fault, not yours or mine, and the propensity of comic book creators to guilt trip fans about preordering has to be classified as some kind of weird version of Stockholm syndrome.

>The same thing applies sometimes to fans, who are constantly pressured by the industry to feel responsible for sales numbers and pass along that attitude to their peers. Don't want to see your favorite character's book canceled? Well, you better preorder and tell all your friends to preorder too. Want to see more diversity in comics? You'd better buy whatever half-hearted attempt at cashing in on diversity Marvel is promoting this month whether you enjoy reading it or not, or else they might get the idea that comic book readers don't like diversity, and that would be your fault, you see. Don't want to see your favorite artist die alone in poverty after creating some of the most successful intellectual properties in the history of American pop culture? Well, you'd better keep shelling out $4.99 for those comics Marvel is giving them a 1% cut of.

That whole thing is worth reading this is a fraction that i agree with i had to edit

>>
>>85894639
They said that and yet that came after they mentioned grocery stores as an inroad half a dozen times

>What comics needs to grow is a fresh idea, something new, and something affordable and attractive to a wider audience, and as soon as we all stop enabling publishers to live greedily in the past, they might be forced to start looking for those new ideas instead of blaming you for their failures. Then, and only then, will comics evolve into the 21st century.
and they also don't actually suggest what these fresh brilliant new ideas should be, just that OBVIOUSLY something is out there but Marvel just won't do whatever it is for some reason!

I mean digital seems the obvious route but Didio said a while ago that digital was stagnating and DC's biggest growth was in bookstores

Oh, I see. Didio's not just a raging moron, he's just old.

Yeah, I know that sounds like some "Eat It, Grandpa!" shit, but real talk, this is the information age, where everyone has a smartphone, and books are getting popular again because everyone can read them on said smartphones. Which in turn is causing a lot of bookstores to shut down because readers would rather download books than get up and walk around for hours looking for titles the store may not even have available.

http://comicsbulletin.com/phil-hester-emerging-worst-year-life-professionally/

>“As a result it took me a year to complete that Beyond Belief four-issue miniseries,” Hester clearly felt frustrated as he shared this story. “I feel terrible about that. Right when I was diagnosed I went to the editor and the publisher and Acker and Blacker [the hosts of Thrilling Adventure Hour] and said, look, if you guys want to move on from me, go ahead, because I have no idea if I’ll even be able to draw comics in two or three months.

“Thankfully they stuck with me, they were like, you know what, we started with you, we’re going to finish with you. They took a hit from that because Image is not happy with that. Image is on a ‘no more late books’ pogrom, you know. They really don’t want more late books. They weren’t happy with that. But Acker and Blacker and my editor Nate Cosby stuck with me and I have to publicly thank them for that.” The relief in Hester’s voice is almost palpable as he relates this story.

Yeah I never really understood that complaint. When I started reading comics I just picked up whatever looked cool and started reading. Aside from occasional name drops and back info you need is usually presented at some point. And these days I feel like that complaint is even more pointless with all the movies and shit making these characters and their backstories such common knowledge in pop culture.

The only thing I ever had trouble getting into was Green Lantern but that was because it was right in the middle of Johns' massive run. Although after reading his run from the start and catching up to Blackest Night I ended up going back and just reading every GL book from the beginning. That was a fun summer and probably why the Legion storytime got me itching to do it more with other characters.
