Feel free to discuss any of the comic or cartoon iterations of them here.
>>
>>85892940
well I guess the original comics were pretty neat, especially for back then
but all I really wanna talk aboot is the old show and the 90s movies. what else matters?

I'm partial to the cartoon, despite growing up with the movies.
>>
I remember Wednesday was always a favorite character of mine regardless of iteration.
Thought it was kinda weird that live action versions usually depicted her with a perpetual frown, whereas cartoon versions tended to make her smile a whole lot.
>>
>>85893913
It was just the 90s edge of that era
>>
>>85893913

I do find it interesting how Wednesday has always been the most different between adaptions.

The comic's either had her with a gloomy expression(most common) or a big smile, never a frown.

Pugsley differs a bit too, but it's mostly just him being more of a follower and and quite a bit dumber in the adaptions where Wednesday is more dominant.
So, essentially any time Wednesday has been depicted as the older sister. In the original comic, the old sitcom and the cartoons(both the 70s and 90s), she was the youngest child.

I honestly think movie Pugsley was pretty bad due to this. He's less his own character and more Wednesday dumb lackey.

I like all versions of Wednesday pretty evenly, but I do very much favor the cartoon and the old series on the Addam kids overall due to Pugsley.

>>85893988
But the cartoon came out in 1992, one year after the movie with Christina Ricci's Wednesday.

I like the shit they say some times, it's long over due for another addams family but would it work now in this day of age cell phones and bullshit we see now?

God I would love to see them rip into tumbler people.
>>
>>85894239

There was the Broadway Musical(and the translated swedish version I went to).

Didn't much care for that specific version of Wednesday and Pugsley, but everyone else did a fantastic job.

And in my case, the actress doing Wednesday made up for it by being the best singer of all of them.
>>
>>85894178
I doubt the two were really that closely related to one-another when in production

They were probably two separate adaptions rather than one unified attempt at a single continuity

I actually really liked the third movie, which most people seem to hate.

The new Wednesday actress did great.
>>
>>85894500
I remember really enjoying it. Someone brought up that there aren't any serious stakes, since they get threatened with death at the end--which isn't something that would faze them, but it's definitely Wednesday's camp escapades that steal the show.

I personally think the cartoon is brilliant.

It has some of the standard speedbumps that comes with being marketed to a younger demographic, but it's mostly great.

They also managed to get John Astin to voice Gomez.

iunno, 90s movie pugsley was funny enough, in a quieter kinda Curly kinda way. the only bad pugsley is the one that grew up into the fedora guy
>>
>>85894500
I loved her relationship with the nerdy jewish kid
I can't really pick between the first and second though. They were both great and kinda function as a unit. only grandmama was recast
>>
>>85895213
i wish there was more weird random nudity in movies today the way there was back then.
>>
>>85895601
>>85893913
There's a fantastic solution for this, and that is to do like the 60s-show reunion movie in which they got wednesday and pugsley back AND also recast them, just saying gomez and morticia had two new kids who were just like the old ones. And then named them wednesday jr and pugsley jr. like as if the addamses have babies in litters.
That way you get double the wednesday, double the fun!
>>
>>85895925
>the one that grew up into the fedora guy

I've been having hard time remembering y first childhood waifu but I actually think it may be Wednesday from the movies. >>
>>85896092
isnt that just bizarre?
i mean everyone is someone, and it's not as if he's really famous since that version of pugsley didnt do anything and wasnt well-received or even well-known, but still..
>>
>>85896109
This.
though I still prefer the more modern-styled Lydia Deetz variety to the ironic oldfashioned clothes and hairstyle type
>>
I'm not a big fan of the redo on Wednesday Addams personality. I appreciate that's more interesting but in the original show, she was a kind little girl despite her gloomy and dark physical look. It was a contrast. Here and now, she's just dark dark gloom dark. That's fine I guess but it takes some of the charm away.
>>
>>85895377
>Featured Tim Curry as Gomez

Haven't seen it yet,but Curry as Gomez? On paper sounds great
>>
>>85896177
Imagine Chrstina Ricci as Lydia Deetz...
>>
>>85896356
Well the problem is that "gloomy and dark" look doesn't come off as anything but quaint, oldfashioned, and sweet since.. honestly since even the time when it aired. They were supposed to look kinda dark and gothic like what you'd expect a vampire's family to look like. Now if anything she just looks amish. you don't expect anything dark out of a girl like that, except ironically in the Shining sense.
If they were to seriously reimagine the original spirit of the addamses for the post-80s period, Wednesday would look like a scary goth with heavy piercings and black makeup, but then be a super sweet perky little thing

It's kind of a weird dichotomy, yknow? and not just the obvious shit like "seemingly snobby upperclass but actually nice vs seemingly down to earth working-class but actually secretly bigoted jerks who think everyone is below them", but really if you think about it, they're almost backwards.. the munsters scare everyone by how they look because they're straight up CREATURES, and they do weird versions of everyday shit, like practicing your writing in blood.. whereas the addamses seem pretty normal until you realize they do everyday versions of weird shit, like playing fake violent games except the violence is real. it's almost the inverse.

That would actually work. The munsters would be too proud to accept charity so they'd be all polite about it and insist on helping out, earning their keep.. but herman and lily would quickly grow bitter over how cavalier these rich folk are with their fortune while they had to work hard
meanwhile grampa and fester just settle in thick as thieves.
lily watches the kids, they give her the usual substitute-teacher treatment addams style, and she's seen everything and a half so they actually like her. and i guess eddie would .. play with them too, i dunno what his thing ever was besides 'is a kid'

Wasn't that the one where the first episode had Wednesday berating some guys about "not offending females" or some shit? That video was called Adult Wednesday Addams and got taken off Youtube... I don't know, I think making her a feminist seriously kills the character, even more than the musical did.
>>
>>85907550
Speaking of the musicial. How did they portray her in that?
>>
>>85907583
Pretty much still dark and edgy, but currently in love and her edgyness is breaking down due to love.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo44tiDTEVU

She she tries to force her family to be "normal". She's feels pretty bland and is mostly just there to serve as a catalyst for the plot.
(which despite seeming like a "Wednesday Wedding Story is really more of a Gomez-centered story about letting go)

I think that the whole normal vs crazy thing was the biggest misstep in the musical. The Addams Family never really considered themselves crazy as such.

The issue I think is that they decided to go with a Wednesday almost entirely based on the movies- and then decided on the plot and remolded her to fit it, rather than really make their own Wednesday. As such she just feels off.
>>
>>85907502
>>85907550
Not the first episode, that's episode 3 from season 2.

It's available on youtube on another channel.

It was actually not THAT bad outside:
A. The actor didn't realize that edgy Wednesday works the best with Gomez and the others lightening the mood inbetween.

B. Doing an older Wednesday focusing entirely on the dark and gritty is a mistake- especially when you consider that even Ricci's Wednesday had moments of excitement and innocent laughter, and she's not really as frigid as she seems(She's an Addams they are all passionate at heart). This series completely missed that and makes her a mostly unemotional bitch.

C. They complicate things too much at times. The catcall episode could have worked if you removed her little rant about "how they treat women" and just had the turnabout is fair play thing done any way. Gets your message across without making it seem you are making Wednesday a political pawn for you to use.

I honestly don't think it was weak outside Wednesday. Most of the other characters get to shine in their own way and Gomez is pretty great.

I honestly really like all of the Beinekes as well. A bit sad that nobody drew concept art of them.

You could say they sacrificed Wednesday to be a plot device so the rest of the characters could bounce of eachother well.

But I do agree that Addams Family might be harder to translate to modern times. Back in ye olden days, everybody was a normie and if you weren't you were a loser. I don't gonna lie, in fact see a lot of potential in this factor. Seeing the Addams crash with more than one kind of culture and not only the "White bread high middle class" seems very funny for a creative setup. Like that episode where a "bad boy" biker crash into the mansion.

Well the initial formula for the show was how they accepted outsiders but outsiders rarely accepted them. They tolerated pretty much anyone and were friendly with folks that didn't fit into their molds. They just didn't really get that people might not understand or enjoy their lifestyle.

I remember watching the 90s cartoon as a kid a lot and loved it. Then I heard about the original live action show, I already liked the munsters so I wanted to check it out.
First episode I watched had a gag with Fester holding a bomb for Gomez and he had to throw it away before it exploded, only narrowly avoiding the explosion. He got really mad at Gomez for putting his life in danger afterwards. I was so upset he wasn't anything like the Fester I saw in the cartoon and it was many years before I gave the original series another chance.

The same way it always did, the joke about the adams is that they were always antiquated from the way they dress, the way they talk, their house, their lifestyle. That coupled with the fact that they think in an entirely alien way.

Quite literally the most successful relationship in all of live television media I think.
>>
>>85942889
>i dont think the adams were racist or homophobic, i doubt theyd be transphobic or make fun of people who say theyre nonbinary or whatever.
Them being remarkably tolerant of peoples differences has been a hallmark of them, however they are also somewhat psychotic and completely unforgiving of people screwing with them in a unfriendly manner so somebody trying to hurt and or screw them based on some kind of warped moral code would probably end up either terrified out of their minds by the Adams antics or dead.

Bit of a moral dilemma for me as well, I mean just because I know I CAN, does that mean I should?

I mean...I see other online artists (who went whole hog) get all sorts of shit for it when they fail to feed the fanbase's insatiable hunger or pander to them.

I like artists like Yeagle, Cho, Hughes, Budd, Barbucci, DePins, Timm or Sanders, who'll give you a tease here and there to keep you coming back for more. Like comic tantra.

That's why.

To be fair though...I'll whip up something tame. And on topic.

All of them have done straight up porn before.

To be fair if you do decide to make porn comics I will shamelessly pirate and distribute them but others will inevitably pay for them and stroke your ego such is the way of things.

Another answer could be the use of the pseudonym. If people get rabid, dump the name, adjust your style a bit and hack at it again.

>>
>>85894239

>>
>>85960864

>>85960974
One thing about the Addams Family is that it wasn't obvious if they were supposed to be based off of famous monsters or just a family of high-functioning sociopaths for the time in their TV incarnation. But I always felt very comfy watching them. The Munsters gave me too many cringe moments, and I just couldn't settle in with them in the same way. Plus, although I loved the character of Grandpa, most of the Munsters felt like they were just too corny. Adding the sex appeal of the ugly 'normal' one also took me out of the fantasy as they shoehorned her antics into the show. That both shows premiered six days apart from each other in the same week was pretty interesting, though.

Could be fun. But it wacky slapstick corny dialogue mostly.

The Addams had a macabre, dark sense of humor. schadenfreude usually gets the bigger laugh.

Work that into a Munsters reboot, you might have something.

That they embrace that people fear them because they are different, and relish in the fact.

>>86005713
Pugsley (pericles) actually had one episode in the cartoon when he fell in lovew ith a girl and the girl was surprisingly normal, which is interesting comparing it with another episode in which Wednesday (Merlina) fell in love with a guy from a horror show on tv, wich is more of what you expect from the Addam's kind of taste in people, which would make Pugsley kind of a deviant for the family, though they still were quite supportive when they tried to help Pugsley anyway.
>>
>>86005713
their parents are pretty damn passionate, we know that much
>>86007236
what country is this where they had different names? and why?
>>
>>86007281
Latino America (basically any country in America that speak spanish) had their own names thanks to the mexican dub of the Addams family, the only character that kept her name unchanges or translated was Morticia, the rest were changed due a trend of the time of making the names more common to spanish speakers (kind alike how old anime dubs did the same to japanese named characters)

so in the latam dubs of the Addams the names are like this:
Gomez to Homero
Fester to Lucas
Pugsley to Pericles
Wednesday to Merlina
Thing to Dedos
Large to Largo (basically the same word but translated)
Cousin itt to Tio Cosa
>>
>>86007436
homero is a real name? I thought that was just what they called homer in the latin simpsons dub. Also, isn't GOMEZ a hispanic name?
Making pugsley GREEK is just weird. and you'd think they'd have made Wednesday named Miércoles
>Large
it's Lurch actually. Google translate says that word in espanol is "Estacada"

so basically that's fucking weird.
>>
>>86007436
>Fester to Lucas

Also Daffy Duck is called Lucas in latino, something must be up with that name
>>
>>86007540
>homero is a real name?

Hova you heard about The odyssey by Homero?
>>
>>86007540
>Lurch

Well in spanish he is Largo/long.
>>
>>86007540
Gomez is a hispanic surname not a proper name, Homero is actually a hispanic name, very common in Europe.
The name Pericles in spanish has connotations of a high social status name in the old days, is not used anymore but it made sense for a high society family in the past.
As for Wedensday, agains is not common in sapnish to name kids after days, which is weird because we are perfectly fine with naming kid after concepts like Esperanza or something like that.
The kast thing was actually ny nistake, i have only heard the name Lurch never saw it written so to my ears it always sounded like Large, but yeah in that case then i guess they changed Lurch name too.
>>
>>86007540

I think that they change the names in a way that they would mean something in spanish.

Gomez is a latin last name so its not funny. Homer is not funny either put sound strange compared with other names.

Merlina is also greek.

>>
>>86007692
>The kast thing was actually ny nistake
fuck i can't type for shit tonight
i meant "the last thing was actually my mistake"
>>
>>86007601
I think is because Lucas sounds like Loco which is Crazy in spanish.
>>
>>86007692
>>86007708
yeah well wednesday isn't supposed to sound normal. It's supposed to be a reference to a nursery rhyme
basically if these guys wanted to 'translate' but keep the same feel, they would have given gomez a foreign-sounding name (maybe a french one), morticia something that sounds like death (i guess they left her alone. fine), translate wednesday and lurch (and maybe Fester, since that's a word), pugsley something that sounds ugly, Itt would logically be 'Esso'. It sounds like they called him 'Cosa' which DOES mean thing, so they fucked that should have been Thing's name.. whatever.

it's like, cmon guys, people in other countries deserve to be in on the jokes too.
>>
>>86007854
is funny that you say that because i have seen it in English tranlations too, If you have ever read Asterix in its original languages or any language close to french and then read the english translation, a lot of jokes cannot be translated, so they chose to make their own jokes instead. Is not the ideal solution but you must understand as a translator you are not just translating something for the sake of the original material, you are also basically making new material that tries to be as faithful to the original as possible in the new language but sometimes stuff doesn't work as well.
An as i said before it was more or less a common compromise at the time, we are talking about the same people who dubbed the muppets and instead of using Kermit which means nothing in spanish they went with Rene which sounds like rana (spanish for frog)
>>
>>86007971
yeah kermit is just an obscure as fuck name*. I feel like the best thing to do if you change things (which you shouldnt) is to preserve the feel. if the original made a pun, make a pun. if it did something else, probably best to do something else.
*in fact it's a variant of a variant of a variant of MacDermott from an obscure british island, and the only reason it's known in america is because one of our best presidents had a son named kermit. seems like a lot of well-loved long-lasting media characters have names like that. garfield, heathcliff, homer..
>>
>>86007854
>to be a reference to a nursery rhyme
A nursery rhyme that is not known in spanish speaking countries, naming her Miercoles wouldn't had meant anything and worse of all it doesn't even sound like a female name.
Fester translate as Pudrirse which is an insult in a lot of spanish speaking countries. Is easy to see them problematic from another language perspective but from a spanish speaker perspective they make more sense.
>>
>>86007971
>as a translator you are not just translating something for the sake of the original material, you are also basically making new material that tries to be as faithful to the original as possible in the new language but sometimes stuff doesn't work as well.
Fucking this, so much.

Having done a few translations to help out some people/just for fun, jokes and puns can be ghastly to work with.

Some are just fine, or if you're smart enough, you can come up with an entirely different joke that shares the same spirit of the original one, but eventually you'll run across that dreaded cultural and linguistic barrier that prevents any joke without having to explain it outright.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of lazy translators out there who'll just run the script through some computer program, and put it out there for mass consumption while getting paid for it.

Is fucking amazing how much cinema in general sexually sploids children.

I remember seeing young fake Jean Grey in x-2 and one shot in which clearly you could see her underwear throught her pijama and I was all '' hey know what they are doing!''

Same goes for young child Mystique, Catwoman in Gotham, even that girl that was into Carl in TWD got a couple of ass shots

I'd want another cartoon series, honestly.

I'm fully aware they'd probably go with a Ricci-esque Wednesday, but I'd hope they take some pointers from the 92 cartoon both for her and Pugsley(who has been pretty bad in anything that stars a Ricci-esque Wednesday).

yeah right, because when you create a character that screams SEX like Mystique did in the X-men films there is nothing strange to give that exact same ''nude'' design to a little girl

So giving the little girl a tight suit with leather and having her spread her legs and show her ass even in promotional material is not producers sploiding children
