Canon can be great or terrible. Weak shitlords like to say "It chains the best writer to the work of the worst" but that's a complete fucking misunderstanding of art. Art thrives on restriction. It thrives on form. And then, when it breaks that mold, that means something. The fucking renaissance happened under crazy ass artistic censorship for christ's fucking sake. The Divine Comedy and Paradise Fucking Lost work with a canon that people killed over. Don't fucking tell me that Brian Michael Bendis or Jed Fucking Whendon is being fucking held back by canon.

Yeah? I mean, it's not as though discussions of canonity are worthless. If an event or story is considered to have officially taken place in the universe of a story it can add a context to whatever moment you're currently watching, which can affect how much you enjoy it. Canon discussions are a slippery slope into autism, but there are plenty of other things that get discussed that are far more pointless.
