Reading the recent FF storytimes especially the one where The 3 go to meet Annhilus for the first time, I was wondering what issues of FF I should collect?

I have read modern Hickman's run, Fraction as well as Robinson's run. I may get the Lee and Kirby run thanks to the storytimer.

Whats next? I heard Byrne run is good as well but are there any stories worth a read in between Lee's and Byrne?

>Reading the recent FF storytimes especially the one where The 3 go to meet Annhilus for the first time, I was wondering what issues of FF I should collect?
Read all of Lee and Kirby's run, which is the first 100 issues or so. Kirby's art is to die for and it's where most of their lore (also MU lore in general) gets established. Ulti-Mate is storytiming it lately on /co/.
The '70s is where the FF title meandered a bit, there were Buscema and (Conway?) on writing duties after Leebut they weren't nothing notable. Roy Thomas had a short stint but his stories around 160-170 were lots of fun.
Marv Wolfman's run is considered classic, mostly because tons of stuff was happening in it, since FF still was a big book for Marvel.
But basically it's Byrne when the book came back on top of being great. After that in the late 80s came Engelhart, whose issues were so bad and squandered he asked the editors to put his name off the credits, and Simonson, who again played around with the toys some more.
The 90s amount to basically De Falco in the pre-Onslaught era and Claremont post-HR. In the 00s you had Pacheco, Loeb and some others for a while to tie up Claremont's loose ends until Waid/Wieringo came up with their stellar run. Then you had mediocrity again with Straczinsky around Civil War, McDuffie and then Millar/Hitch with their delays until finally Hickman refreshed the whole thing.
Long story short: Lee/Kirby's, Byrne's and Waid/Wieringo's runs are where it's at. Read De Falco or Millar if you want soap operas and dumb fun. Simonson and Thomas are quite nice too, although nothing too notable.

Oh I assumed Englehart penned some good issues. Wasn't the Defalco run with the slutty Sue costume? Is it really that worth it?

Also should I just skip Claremont till I hit Waid's run?
>>
Lee & Kirby
John Byrne and the few issues with wolfman before that
Walt Simonson
Waid
Mcduffie
Millar

Fantastic 1 2 3 4
early Ultimate ff was good
there's also some roy thomas stuff but I forget which issues

Don't fall for clickbait shit for casuals like The Ten Most Terrible Costumes In Marvel History. The costume isn't prominent, didn't last long and was tongue-in-cheek enough. DeFalco had this wonderous ability to walk the thin line between incorporating 90s shit like Wolverine cameos, BIG GUNS and X-men expy plots like Franklin as Cable and simultaneously making fun of it for not feeling right in a F4 comic book. As I said, it's dumb fun with tons of soap opera, shocking moments and overall plots slowly moving in the background (especially about Lyja and Reed's disappearance) and still has enough hearfelt moments. Also Scott Lang in the F4 originated here.
Claremont on F4 was weird because it's like middle way between the Good Claremont who gave us everything we love about the X-men and Bad Claremont reduced to writing basically fanfiction with convoluted plots. It's enjoyable, it has a great Sue I think, but I'd say it incorporates too much stuff from the Captain Britain and X-men mythos instead of digging into the F4's. Not bad but skippable, especially if you're buying this stuff and not pirating it.

Ah I might consider it then. I am a fan of just dumb fun.

Also eh I don't mind the costs, I might consider Claremont's if affordable and if you say its actually good.

So just to be sure; Lee&Kirby, then Roy Thomas, Byrne, Simonson, Defalco and then Waid?

I'd recommend Englehart's run. The reason he removed his name was because of editorial at the end of his run I think. His FF vs Time Variance Authority arc was really solid.

Ultimate FF is pretty good, It's really underrated in my opinion.

Everything Ellis/Bendis was great until year 3. Problem is people usually don't like the zombie shit, especially considering the Land art, and the tail end of the run was awful.

Whyd id they act like the Maker's id was asurprise spoiler when this page gave it away issues in advance
>>

I'd skip Waid.
It's not good.

So, you've literally read the best modern run of FF, the most uneven run, and the worst.

Try the Perez issues in between Lee's and Byrne.

Essential FF Reading list

Kirby/Lee WGM
Byrne's run is veryyyyy Byrne. I'd say read it, but go in knowing you might not like it.

Modern runs
Pacheo/Loeb/Kessel 39-54 +Annual
Waid 60-624
Millar/Hitch 554/569

one offs
Morrison/lee 1234
Jim Lee's Reborn FF 1-6
Slott's Thing #8

I would rank Ultimate FF as superior to Millar's and Hitch's run. Bendis was co-writing the first six with Millar + Millar wrote the annual with Jae Lee. Year three is great and even with Porn faces Land is still better than the tumblr tier art on some modern titles.
>>
>>85856737
Yes, skip Claremont's run like the plague. Read Lodell's first issue or two because Alan Davis does the art. Go as far as issue four then skip to Pacheo, who really was pretty good.

>>85856878
No, Defalco's run was worse for a number of reasons. I'd give it a pass, not the least because most of it gets thrown out. If you want something that doesn't take itself too seriously read Simonson's run.
>>
>>85855667
I like Robinson's run aside from main villain reveal I thought it was REALLY good.

Not saying it's the greatest run ever, but DeFalco's run is definitely underrated. If for no other reason than it's the last time Johnny was written as an adult before Heroes Reborn reverted his personality to childish fuckup.

Plus, leader Sue, qt Lyja, and bearded Reed.

my only knowledge of 90s FF comes from that time they had a teamup with ben reilly and i was like woah, bearded reed
