Because anime has been really big here since the late 80's. Every kid grew up watching a lot of anime on public tv. Then a few years later the book industry started selling manga... Like crazy. I believe we're the 2nd country (behind Japan) where manga sells the most. Basically if you talk to young french person (at least below 35), chances are they like anime/manga.
