I've seen a lot of people compare Lance to Sokka, but I think the Pidge-Toph comparison is a little more strained. They don't have much in common other than being short tomboys. Pidge is hypersmart, while Toph had more of a brutish way of thinking. Pidge desperately wants to find her family, while Toph wanted to run away from them.

Forget whatever parallels to worse pairings there are, Lance is just kind of a shit character.
He gets so much screen time but it's almost always wasted on him acting like a twat.
Even when they tried to develop him, weekly mind you, since his worries about not going home were shared more or less by everyone, it got sidetracked by him getting injured for an episode. And then when he got better he completely forgot all his woes and went back to being a massive twat. If it's their way of implying he's fine like he is the writers are kidding themselves.
