Moore had complete freedom to write the last silver age superman story and he chose to put superman to his greatest challenges, fail, and in the end, he finally got to live a normal life with lois. What's so bad about that? Sure, its bittersweet but that's exactly why it was so moving. The whole story showed how the silly yet morally admirable silver age superman would react to such modern-era crimes like bizzaro's homicide and suicide, brainiac's mind control and he completely regretted his killing of myzptlyk. The whole idea was that if superman represents hope and truth and justice, can his views be changed? The answer is no. Silver age superman would rather die than give up his morals. The whole story built up to the wink at the end and to me, it was a perfectly satisfying both as an end of an era and the beginning of another

It's not just about angry. The killing joke is a gigantic cry for help. Joker is trying to prove it's not his fault that he ended up the way he did. He's trying to say he's not weak, that anyone who suffers will go mad like he did. He wants Batman to see this and accept that the world really is a dark sick joke but Batman still has some shred of hope and sanity in him.

It's about how both men see the world and how their relationship is heading to them destroying each other.

I haven't seen the movie. I just saw the joke scene on youtube.
Did I misinterpret something? I was under the impression that Batman was laughing because he was it his wits end. After everything that happened, Barbara, Jim... The Joker was still able to make a joke. He wasn't angry at him as such, so much as he was laughing basically in lieu of crying or beating the absolute shit out of him. This endless cycle, and this is where he's at. It's basically the bad day the joker was talking about.
And yet the scene seems to make it look like bats is avin a giggle with an old m8.

There are moments that I really like in the story, but when I think about it, a lot of them have to do with Swan's art than any of the story or dialogue. But then again the Gaiman version for Bruce was really no better, either.

They cut a lot of out ASS - not just Jonathan death, but also Jimmy's hero moment, and Bizarro world (which was essentially cutting out two issues); however, what I find unforgivable was giving Luthor the voice-over that starts the film AND tagging on the scene at the end where he claims he's been redeemed and spends his last days decoding Clark's genes. And yes, I've read the theories about Dr. Whathisname being Lex, and call BULLSHIT on those as well.

This was an adaptation that they easily could have done as a two-parter, since they've done that crap with Batman twice now.
