Lot of cultures have arbitrary limits on what you can and can't eat. Religions tend to pick up on this and codify it by saying "it's actually God who commands it".

It's also why there are all these weird rules about clothes or whatever. From our perspective it seems weird that God would give two shits about details like that, but a lot of holy texts have how-to instructions on how to live correctly, and they were of course written in ancient cultures that enforced conformity a lot more than we do.
