So what exactly killed Nickelodeon?
>>
>>85752634
The same thing that kills most entertainment industries, bad ideas by board directors that have no understanding of what children( or the consumer in general) actually want and aren't open to new ideas.

But, Nickelodeon isn't as bad as it used to be, but that's kinda of a backhanded compliment. Then again, with Disney only airing its good stuff on a premium channel and CN making horrible reboots. Nearly all of them are fucking terrible.
>>
>>85752634
The minute it went corporate and eventually airing SpongeBob SquarePants.
>>
>>85753416
What's wrong with Spongebob?
>>
>>85753446
The show is a double-edged sword.

It is a fantastic comedy for nearly all age-groups.

However, it was too successful for it's own good, and thus, Nickelodeon milked it continuously and never bothered to truly come out of their comfort zones for a while, more so since Avatar ended.
>>
>>85753446
originally nothing, but when they started shifting their schedule to 22-23 hours of Spongebob every day things started to go downhill
>>
>>85752634
Honestly? Plain bad luck.

Schneider had 2 good shows and 2 bad ones.
Cartoon Network successfully bid for and got a lot of the most popular cartoons airing today (SU, Regular Show, Gumball, etc.).
The writers of their golden age shows either gone or the shows they wrote for ended (Avatar, Rugrats, Fairly Odd Parents, Spongebob).

It's hard to pinpoint what exactly went wrong. They had great shows, then those shows died or sucked, and now here we are. That's really all there is to it.
>>
>>85752634

because pop culture is cyclical and while they used to have a ton of great cartoons, they slowly added more and more live action shows until it became nothing but Dan "get in the van" schnieder. now that they've gone too far in that direction, the kids who grew up during their golden age are starting to gain higher-up positions at Nick and making an effort to go back to more animation. Shows like Harvey Beaks and Loud House both come from guys who storyboarded and directed on old nicktoons.

if this trend continues, nick will eventually be full of good cartoons again. then the next generation will start adding more live action shows to add more variety. its the circle of life

idk im talking out my ass tho

She's the reason Nick killed themselves back in early 2006. As soon as she became president:

>90s-early 00s shows were removed, even reruns

>Shows like Avatar, Chalkzone, Catscratch, and Jenny the waifu were treated badly, moved around different timeslots and (in the latter three's case) not given a chance to develop, then cancelled

>Terrible shows like Naked brothers band, Back to the barnyard, Tak and the power of Juju, and post-movie Spongebob were spammed every day for hours on end - especially Spongebob.

>SpongeBob entered full Zombie Mode with the second half of season 4 onwards

desu most of Nickelodeon's early reputation was built on importing Canadian shows that were designed to satisfy the Canadian government. Stuff like You Can't Do That On Television (which actually invented the slime) and The Elephant Show were Canadian imports that Nick could grab regional rights to.

NickToons (Rugrats/Doug/R&S) came out before World Premiere Toons (Powerpuff/Bravo/Dexter) so Nick had an early advantage in creating their own shows but they kind of pissed it away. Some of it is that they just didn't appear have any standards for animation whatsoever. Many of their shows "looked" awful. Rugrats and R&S had okay art for what they were trying to do, but Fairly Oddparents and SpongeBob just look ugly as shit to someone who is an idle observer.

I don't watch Adventure Time or Steven Universe either, but those shows actually have charming art styles that are uniquely their own but look quality.
>>
>>85768535
It was explained because the need for live game shows diminished. It also happened about the same time Disney shut down the animation unit they were running out of Orlando as well, so the whole "Hollywood East" push of putting studio production stuff in Orlando and letting theme park audiences watch, which was such a draw for 1988-1999, was finally over.

They seem really good on paper, and I mean REEEEEALLY good, like sucking on a girl's toes before sex, lel just kidding. But i believe the reason why Nick is so in love with Dan"Don't be such a fighter" Schneider is because they are so fucking cheap, even Im amazed at how low the quality has gotten on these shows. Henry Danger is the worst example of this. With its cardboard sets and props and its cheap as fuck computer effects that any art school freshman could have made. I know its a sitcom but considering what the network used to do before its amazing. Nickelodeon used to be the leader in TV animation, shows like Ren and Stimpy played an important part in the whole Animation Renaissance of the 90s, but animation costs money, whereas this is cheaper than Indian costumers at a labor day sale.

Final Fantasy 7 when you look at it with no previous biases was a pretty light hearted, fun, adventure game about teenage heroes saving the world

Then when western autists and hambeasts got hold of it they created an alternate universe (rooted in spergy teenage angst) about it being this hot topic tier, super dramatic, edgy, emo game

FFS they turned Cloud's perception from "shounen hero" to a whiny depressing "CRAAAAWWWLIIIIIIIIIN IN MY SKIIIIIIIIIIIN" caricature that never existed

This may sound insane considering i'm posting on a Japanese image board, but i actually hate anime because of all the pandering. If i wanted to see a tan girl with massive tits and a super wedgie covered in 'sweat' moan for five minutes i would watch porn. I watch the show because i am interested in the characters and the plot, not the tits. Even anime that is normal by western standards will have at least one character who was made just to flash their tits. It just seems so retarded and unnecessary when the show grinds to a halt because they just had to have some girl wearing a white shirt fall into a puddle, or something equally retarded.

Also i don't know how people actually fall for the 'semen demon' meme because Japanese anime is a one trick pony with this shit. All the girls will have the same E-cup bust size, and they will all be wearing the same basic short skirt with a too-tight shirt. And they will have have the same ear-piercing moan.

It's a toss up for me. I feel that the art style is amazing; it has life and uniqueness to it most shows tend to lack. It's alot like El Tigere, in that it's so stylized but without being an eyesore, yet the writing is lackluster and the characters are more archetypes instead of people because the main characters are the nerd, idiot, asshole, and tomboy without really making them deeper. I'm not saying they need to be fully fleshed out with >DEEPEST LORE but can use some personality to stand out

They threw their personality and long term plan out the window to maximize their individual spongebob profits. Then when they lost all their allies and ambition, they could do nothing but spongebob to keep them afloat. TMNT also worked out pretty well for them on the side.

Thankfully, they finally realized they had to do something about this. It was a rocky road what with shit like Sanjay and Craig, but Nickelodeon finally got a good show again with Harvey Beaks and then Loud House. Lets hope they keep them both.

A few things:

>They let Schnider over stay his welcome after Drake and Josh
>pic related is (now all canceled) the nicktoons line up post 2004 and pre 2011. It's either promotional shows, CGI pandering, or both. The only outlier is Mighty B which got canned after 2 seasons. Pre School days was abysmal.
>the current nicktoons line up is post movie Spongebob, Fairly Odd Corpse, something called Pig Goat Banana Cricket, and Harvey Beaks. The only good outlier is Loud House.
>They've put all their money into hoping their live action line up sticks. There's nothing running now that is past season 3.

Basically they gave up trying to be an animation network after they failed in the mid 2000s after Avatar ended and they had nothing else to back up their ratings in the cartoon department. They did, however, break even with the help of the ending season of Drake and Josh and the launch of iCarly. After Korra failed to land correctly, that they figured that Cartoon Network had won.

They are looking to change that. One of the reasons they built the new complex. More room and giving the production teams more freedom.

If they can master a quicker time table and aren't as sluggish as Disney with putting out shows. Then they could have a solid comeback.

I keep watch on the job boards for possible employment and they've got a few animated shows they are staffing for right now along with the revivals.

One thing that worries me is the continued shakeup at Viacom.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-dooley-viacom-redstone-20160824-snap-story.html

>Many expect Dooley to make changes, including possibly retooling Viacom’s television networks group, which includes MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, BET and Comedy Central, which have seen a steep ratings fall. The TV networks are vital, producing virtually all of Viacom’s profits.

While Loud House is doing well its nowhere near the apex of The Sponge from a few years ago.

Dauman was a damn idiot, during his ten year reign as CEO of Viacom he never really grew the company, he just kept its existing properties under a tight leash, never tried to expand digitally with him reaching out to YouTube or Hulu and instead tried to sue and/or quit negotiations with them. His bullshit with carrier disputes is also another reason why Viacom lost subscribers as well, that DirecTV dispute made them lose many customers.

> I'd love to see more investment into Nick but you can never tell with executives
The execs there have a rough road to follow, but if they do actually commit to making quality programs and make GOOD reboots of old shows, they might make Nickelodeon a stronger channel.
>>
>>85777554
Yea his tantrums with providers nuked many of the channels strong ratings from just a few years back. Accelerated some of the cord cutting as well.

Would like to see the new guy cut a deal with Netflix again. The Nick stuff was always a solid performer for them.
>>
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2016/03/28/netflix-is-coming-for-your-kids/

Saw this article from a few months back.

>Modern kids' media saturation has given them far more nuanced tastes, said Bronwen O'Keefe, Nickelodeon’s senior vice president of development and production. Her cable network is trying to follow, by moving away from the traditional kid sitcom and further into both "happy reality" series, with the same faces and sensibilities of viral YouTube videos, as well as serialized scripted shows with “more genre-bending, more complex storytelling, more drama, mystery and suspense.”

>“Kids want everything," O’Keefe said. "They want more, more, more, and they want different, different, different, and so we’re exploring every genre, every style

Second part is true from what I've seen in the job listings. A few Internet Tuber sounding shows.

From what I can tell, I think Nick is realizing that they're dealing with a quality VS quantity debate. There's a big outcry for quality control happening that goes against everything the network stood for originally, which was a really large diverse line up. The problem with that today is that kids have access to ANY show they want at ANY time. So the fight becomes about getting heads turned toward the screen.
The only post 2009 TV show to even touch early 2000s Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents in ratings was Korra, and even that didn't make enough of a splash to warrant channel time. Everything else was a movie tie in or didn't make it for a second season.

I think we're looking at a turn around of Nick trying to prove they have the chops to make a Steven Universe or a Gravity Falls. That is to say a show where there is a plot that ties everything together and it's not all fart and booger jokes. They had done so before with Hey! Arnold and As Told by Ginger, and if you're willing to count Doug as such then so be it. Kids need a reason to tune in every week. The serial status of cartoons has long since been dead and Nick needs to realize that the internet provides us with all of the brainless "so random" humor we can handle. They need to step it up if they want to prove they're a viable network that takes their demographic seriously enough to show some quality programing.

Now all that's left to do is tell CN to shut Go! down for good.
>>
>>85777862
>Bronwen O'Keefe
Wow, is she the only smart person on that team? Those are actually some good ideas.
>>
>>85778025
They are reacing key parts of their demographic, but what they needed to do, as well as make quality programming on par with the old Avatar series, is that they needed to expand to the internet and have a stronger presence there too. That's what's hurting them, cord cutting and moving to the Internet is what most people are doing now .

They're having a quality vs. quantity debate as well as having a conversation about modernizing the approach to content distribution.

Plus either keeping tighter control of Paramount or selling part of it. Because that movie studio is what's hurting them.

>>85775511

>>85755986
But the issue is that the guy who made Loud House is the grim reaper of cartoons as he killed Dexter's Lab & PPG, also the girls are just flat hollow tropes.

As for Harvey Brakes, the less said about that the better because after that "Anime Episode" that was so offensive that it made All This And Rabbit Stew look like modern day progressing it's just best to stay away from it.

All we want from Nick is to air the old Paul Terry shorts, that's it.

Regardless what one thinks of Korra the entire clusterfuck over its later seasons is part of their difficulty in figuring out what path to take.

We had some pulling it from iTunes and all digital sources even though it had been a big seller for the first two books because someone wanted to focus on Network Exclusivity even running commercials proclaiming that.

Then they shifted it to online only about halfway through before finally just carting the whole thing off to their website. Which wasn't as good with streaming it as it had been back when they did that with Book 2.

Then after book for was over they let go of a good amount of executives in the spring of '15. We've yet to see how that will shape up going forward though as any plans made then are just now starting to come into play.

Besides Korra I haven't watched anything on Nick that wasn't old SpongeBob after Back at the Barnyard and Victorious. Even then I have didn't watch anything animated thay premiered between Avatar and Barnyard or anything live action between Ned's Declassified and Victorious.

So I don't really know how Nick's doing today. I know that there isn't anything (maybe, heard good things about Loud House) thay appeals to both kids and adults and isn't just spastic kid shit.

>>85753446
It was a great show, but sadly Nick was beyond corporate after that point and pretty much sunk all their money on it, to the point of not giving other shows that much of a chance and flooding the schedule with Spongebob reruns. Spongebob is just going on forever and not stopping, and that's pretty shit for most shows, you can either end good or go on to the point where all the luster rubs off. Yes, Rugrats was pretty much a similar situation, and it really wasn't much better with introducing a new character every so often, it pretty much went from good to okay at best after the first movie, and then pretty much shit after the second movie (Second movie was good though), it was clear that by the end of the Rugrats run that the crew was exhausted and the writers couldn't really come up with anything that interesting in the 2000's like they did in 1993 when they were fresh with ideas. The only thing they could really do was just move on to All Grown up, which is a pretty mixed bag, I thought it was decent enough, but it did have it's good share of bad episodes and specials... also 6th graders acting like highschoolers was fucking stupid.

Spongebob doesn't really have too much longer to last, eventually ideas for new episodes will run out and something might eventually come to steal it's thunder, this might happen in 5 years for all I know, but I do predict that eventually it will just end on a rather blank note like the whole rugrats franchise did.

So what would improve Nick? They should try to stand out more than trying to get the "Meme kids" crowd, go back to slime and also give shows that aren't Spongebob or Fairly odd parents more support, so that the eventual cancellation of both series won't be such a big blow for the network.

Similar to Victoria Justice, all her co-stars (barring Drake Bell) have hit a certain level of stardom she just can't seem to get to (part of that probably due to taking time off for college). Since she's returned to acting, she's been in one failed pilot and one sitcom that only lasted a single 13-episode season.

Yeah, I used to hate it as a kid too. But looking back I can appreciate what they were trying to do. I'd rather have more child-oriented news programs than those lame attempts at appealing to sports fans they're doing now.

It had good intentions, but unless you were literally Lisa Simpson incarnate, you probably never wanted to bother, not to mention it usually dealed with issues that many kids couldn't really do anything about, like terrorism. You might as well just hand them a news paper. Not to mention no commercial breaks was absolute torture when one can easily change the channel to something else.

Not only that, but it really was quite different from the other programming Nick had, it's weird to have shows like Ren and Stimpy, and Rocko, and then suddenly some serious show about how to be charitable.

Right now though, people still have to deal with the dreaded "World wide day of play", which does nothing when one can just change to Cartoon Network or just play video games.

He who shall not be named.
There's a reason they changed that logo, OP/

>Networking branding is basically dead
>both CN and Nick have basically given up trying to make anything unique for their networks other than the shows themselves
>Nick just uses memes and smart phone talk for ads now
Boomerang has better presentation at this point.

>Boomerang
Boomerang is literally just Cartoon Network 2 after the whole rebranding, nothing more than Teen Titans go reruns, a few meh shows and reruns of Garfield show and that one canadian show that sounds like Johnny Quest but shalt not be named.

Nick News was great. The fact that it didn't shy away from things like terrorism is just a sign of how much respect they gave kids to tackle tough topics. It was informative and probably gave a lot of kids some good knowledge that influenced their interests going forward.

Yeah, but again, no one liked it unless they were Lisa Simpson incarnate, especially when they did the "No commercials will be aired during this broadcast"

I liked it.
I probably have some Lisa Simpson-esque qualities though.

I liked FF7 because it was this weird balance of horrible shit was going on in the world, and your main characters are terrorists, but as a group they were kind of goofy. It was a nice offset to balance out the messed up themes in the game.
