Kubo and The Two Strings

Why aren't you supporting animation and watching this right now?

Its better than Coraline.

Coraline was extremely overrated. I think it gets love only because it was a story done by Gaiman.

There's no way this movie won't be successful in Japan, which is good news.

Also, what is it about antagonists going insane that really makes a scene ten times more intense?
>>
>>85632050
Because scenes are really only tense when you can't predict what is going to happen.

>>
>>85628700
I agree

I'm not watching it right now because I already saw it Thursday night, but I may go again before it's run is over in theaters

I disagree on it being better than Coraline. Or Paranorman. Better than Boxtrolls though and Laika has yet to make a film that isn't great.

>>
>>85628700
Just saw it with some friends. Pretty spectacular.

Saw the reveals about the beetle and monkey coming a mile away but part of that is due to the good, but subtle, foreshadowing beforehand. It was funnier than I expected, a bit darker than expected, and I was really surprised with how they ended the conflict.

I don't know if I'd say better than Coraline, but easily just as good. The animation is incredible - Laika really outdid themselves.

Like when Coralline was coming out.

>>
>>85639068
Burton did produce it though.
>>
You know, while they explained the three pieces, they never explained the chip Kubo used to strum his instrument, it seemed way more important than the three pieces.
>>
>>85640257
I assumed it was just Kubo's mother channeling her magical energy into the chip. After she gave Kubo wings and sent him away, she ran in to 1v1 the sisters with glowing hands.

But yeah, I'm not entirely sure what purpose the armor was supposed to serve, outside of giving Monkey a sword that she easily could have borrowed from Beetle's hideout.
>>
Sorry, OP, but it just doesn't interest me at all.

>>
I was scared for a good two minutes they were gonna bullshit something more explicit than the most-likely-symbolic ending.
>>
>>85644931
Symbolic? The ghosts were real, he did get to see his parents again. But its not like hes getting to live with them. Presumably they will go on like all the other ghosts did.
>>
>>85644994
There's a jump cut to it instead of the "relieving" action of seeing the ghosts like most movies would do. Even though ghosts are explicit in other parts of the movie, the shot is ambiguously more symbolic than anything.

Which is to say, whether ghost magic happened or not, the movie didn't pander to the audience's sensibilities and try to make you feel better about it. Whether they actually were perceptibly there or it's meant for the audience's convenience, the tone stays intact.

I just watched it today. And as a Japanese person, I say this : "Hory Shitto" that was good. Usually all y'all white folks don't do justice to oriental themed Hollywood crap, mixing Japan and Korea and China out badly. But this? This was AMAZING. The least "white people's view of Japan" I've seen in a very long time. Most favorite from Laika.

No, seriously, prove me fucking wrong. It's doing worse because it's about Asians instead of ambiguously American people or fantasy creatures. The Hollywood execs are fucking right.
>>
>>85645555
Here's a funny thing I noticed. All of them were japanese themed, except the sisters and grandaddy. He was Chinese, and the other had Korean style hats. I don't know if it's their play at the fact that China is Japan's ancestor and Korea being an equivalent of siblings with Japan. But it was nice to see them distinguishing the differences well.
>>
>>85645707
And yet Moon King is the legendary fish who swallowed the moon, which is a distinctly Japanese fable whose name I always forget.

>>
>>85645641
Right. It's not like a good number of American people actually put their flag as design on their clothing or vehicles and have guns 'cause muh rights' , right?

to be honest, I hate Japanese bias of the world, not just towards America. Japan is very... blind to non stereotypical facts. My apologies for my countrymen

>>
>>85645780
And I loved it. I was expecting they put another shitty asian dragon in the end. Nope. It's fish like. Beautiful. I believe oriental beliefs about the heavenly body saw he cosmos and the milky ways as a river or a sea, and divine creatures are typically piscine or fish like, as if to swim in the cosmos. Eastern dragons may be depicted to breathe fire too, but they are celestial/water creatures as well. Brilliant choice of design, what they did.

Beautiful film but I felt like most of Laika's films that the story was under cooked and the pace was a little strange.
They wanted it to be like a story book but it failed, especially when the only impression of that was the monologue by kubo at the beginning and end, and a few too-long fade to black.

I just got through seeing it, it was fantastic. Kubo wasn't kidding with that warning at the start, there were so many details that foreshadowed what was about to happen. There was so much symbolism in every part of the movie; it was like I was always one step ahead of the movie and knew what was about to happen up until the final battle, but it was clearly intentional. It's rare to see this much TLC in a single movie.

It's definitely one of the best movies that came out this year.

Bitch probably has smokers breath so that kills any potential hotness.
>>
Out of all of the animated films that I've seen this year,Kubo is definitely at the top of the list

>1.Kubo
>2.Zootopia
>3.Sausage Party

Bar none, the absolute most impressive display of animation by a million fucking miles out of any animated film.Coupled with an impressive score featuring the Shamisen as proof that even the most retarded looking instrument was made to give joy, display beauty, and emit abstract thoughts and concepts that can only be harnessed through music.

Charismatic characters, lush and vibrant world, wondrous soundtrack

The worst part?
The story was definitely rushed, but for a children's movie that's to be expected

Solid 9.5/10

Also, went to a rather late screening, but there were still roughly 40 adults, and only a few kids.So the 9:10 showing did pretty well compared to shit like Suicide Squad which was still sold out
>>
>>85648483
Man, this is animations biggest downfall; they can't be too long, because the kids will lose interest. If only that was different.

After watching Kubo last night, I decided to watch Coraline and Paranorman.
Wow, I didn't realize they all shared similarities, like Kubo and Coraline had the thing with the eyes, and Kubo and Paranorman about stories.
Overall I'd say Coraline > Kubo > Paranorman. Paranorman was kinda mediocre until the reveal, then the climax.
>>
>Hanzo
>>
>>85649282
Also rewatched Coraline after gettin home from Kubo. Agree with your overall rankings for the movies (assuming Boxtrolls is last, though I still enjoyed it).

It's been years since I've seen Coraline, and it's actually better than I remembered. There are a lot of details I never picked up on, and the structure of how the story plays out is perfect. Other anons should rewatch that and Paranorman.

Yea! I loved Coraline, her cast, everything. It must've been a bitch to animate all those mice when they were performing.
I also did like how even when she's beat the other mother, her story wasn't finished, and when she was crawling through the tunnel while it was closing. Basically, my favorite Laika movie.
>>
Also I want to add, Kubo seemed shorted than the rest of the movies, are there any reasons why?
>>
>>85649563
It's all in your head, every Laika movie hits 1h 40m almost exactly.
>>
>>85649563
Kubo needed to move very fast to cover everything and I think the other films had more time to breath, so that may be it.
>>
>>85649596
>>85649600
Oh alright. It just seemed weird comparing it with other movies because Paranorman dragged into the climax while Kubo kinda ran full speed into it. But yea, a story about a journey based on finding things, that needs time to tell, and with just an hour and 40 minutes, I can see why it's kinda compressed.
>>
>>85647933
>there were so many details that foreshadowed what was about to happen

This is a good movie to rewatch over again. I wish I could afford to go see it a couple of times while its still in theaters.
>>

At the very end of the credits they thank a couple of Japanese culture societies they collaborated with.

Ah, I was wondering where that design came from. My friend and I actually didn't like it and weren't sure why it was chosen. I'm going to have to apologize for assuming it wasn't attached to an existing myth, I thought they just thought it looked cool.

It seems like Kubo lives in an earlier period of Japan than most are familiar with. I would venture to speculate it might be the Nara period.

Dude no they're not.

He straight up made up a happier ending. He says "This ending is happy, I wish it were happier", and then he looks up.

It cuts to a completely different angle with no context, the lanterns turn into Herons, and he's there with his parents.

The entire movie is framed as him telling the story to us. It begins with him giving the same "If you must blink" monologue as he did the townspeople, and ended with him finally learning how to finish a story. He made the ending up for the audience.

Paranorman is shit and its chicken little rehashed shit, at least chicken little tried to have some charm instead of just giving me attitude
I didn't connect with a single character in that movie, development and emotions are pushed so far back that yeah it resembles the kind of interaction that I have with my dad but you don't make a movie about me telling my dad he is a piece of shit and him drinking alone for hours until I move out and we never speak again.
I liked the zombies, I didn't care about the jock being gay, wathever the movie didn't try why should I?

This. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. If it can stop people from watching garbage movies like SS and Sausage Party, maybe it can have the opposite effect here.

serious question, does Travis have an Oedipus complex? every interview is him talking about his mom and how that relates to this movie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGBi9HjUBZs

regardless, the man is fucking brilliant when it comes to the craft of animation. I love how he shoots down this interviewer on a lot of his leading questions and talks about animation as an artist. Nike money was put to good use under this man.
>>
>>85650323

good he brings some variety after disney, pixar and dreamworks.

What's their next big project?

A 2D movie, perhaps?
>>
Saw the movie today. I thought it was sort of underwhelming.
The actions scenes were good, but the story was really predictable.

>Kubo made a ton of dumb decisions just to drag out the movie.
>All the fights were won with luck or arbitrary magic instead of skill or planning (with the exception of the fight with the first sister).
>Kubo never used his ability to control paper for anything useful.
>The sword and armor didn't really do anything.

And why was the instrument magical? Did they ever explain that?

I will admit I liked some parts of the movie. There were funny moments and I liked the ending well enough, but I wouldn't consider it better than average.
The whole thing just seems like a missed opportunity to do something more imaginative with the premise.
>>
>>85649787
I always forget that Laika's based in Portland and less than an hour's drive from where I live, so it was really weird seeing the Portland Japanese Gardens in the credits.
>>
Just saw it and I liked it a lot, but I felt the first half was much stronger than the second. The ending felt cheesy and unnatural compared to the rest of the film. What prompted the villagers to behave like that? And why was it so important to collect all the pieces of armor when they didn't play any part in actually defeating his grandfather?

Before seeing this I saw reviewers talking about how they walked away feeling like they had just watched a Miyazaki movie, but I barely say any of his influence at all. Is Miyazaki's name just short hand for anime that isn't terrible?
>>
>>85650504
>and why was the instrument magical?
It wasn't, and it never was. His mom does plenty of magic without it, Kubo didn't actually need it. It's just how he learned to use his magic and the best way he knows how to focus it.
>>
>>85628700
I did, I watched it alone, didn't get why that other anon got the social anxieties over it. Oh my it was good, very good. I was really enjoying every bit of it from the visual storytelling to the technical aspects of the animated from animatronics to green screen miniatures and alot more. Sorry I'm just glad to, after having the last half dozen films be of Adam Sandler and other z grade drivel, and suffer through so many cringe worthy kids cartoons, this movie made it all worth it.
>>
>>85650269
Samisens sound fucking magical.
>>
>>85638137
Reminder that not only did they have to build it, and ensure it doesn't get broken, they also had to animated it painstakingly to ensure it doesn't look like shite.
>>
>>85650290
Look, /co/, I know you only watch mainstream garbage, but try not to assume that covers all of anime.
>>
>>85638791
Yeah I wished that too, on one hand I understand they are horror monsters like the terminator, so using them often will lessen their threat. On the other hand I'd like to see alot more straight up fights and cat and mouse chases.

It's sentimentally Japanesey and reviewers are stupid

It had the exact same drop BvsS had, which was from the awful word of mouth it had during opening weekend. WoM in general has made recent DC movies front-loaded as fuck.
>>
>>85651026
SS got to stay at no. 1 for its third week unlike BvS.
>>
>>85650504
>Kubo made a ton of dumb decisions just to drag out the movie.

Wait, what exactly did he do wrong?

>All the fights were won with luck or arbitrary magic instead of skill or planning (with the exception of the fight with the first sister).

Not really, none of the sister fights had anything to do with luck. The boat fight was all skill, while nobody except Kubo even survived the last sister fight

>Kubo never used his ability to control paper for anything useful.

He used it to build the boat.

>The sword and armor didn't really do anything

That was kind of the point. The armor was never the answer, if it was then Hanzo would've destroyed the Moon King beforehand. The Moon King just needed to see the light of humanity. He's a creature that exclusively sees the dark side of humans, and became cynical and jaded because of it. Maybe now he can see that humans are also good, and he'll see that even when he returns as the Moon King when he dies.
>>
>>85651040
That is not saying much considering the competition. SS had literally nothing to compete with the whole month, the summer is over. But it still dropped heavily after the first week even despite that.
>>
>>85650269
I actually found out that the shamisen player for the soundtrack is actually from the US, and a couple years ago I had actually seen him perform live at a convention. His whole channel pretty neat and has some of his Kubo performances. https://youtube.com/user/shamikami
