To be fair, the episode was non-canon, and even if it was, it seems to be set in the middle of Season 1 where everything was pretty tame and Steven didn't show any outward mommy issues.

I wasn't mad. I was a bit confused as to why it was happening when first announced. I feel like SU is trying to be too many genres at once. It wants to have the emotional weight of a really serious anime but still have episodes dedicated to be Looney Tune homages. Then it wants to have a musical episode about Pearl's PTSD and then be a silly romcom in another.

I don't know if I'm saying it's a bad thing, but it does feel like Sugar wants to cram in as many ideas as possible. Like, she thinks this might be her only show ever so she should input every single source of inspiration she can.

I liked the UG because I like UG, but the show does feel wildly tonally inconsistent. Kind of like the show is one big experiment to see what sticks.
