So, as a father, I can't help but notice the difference in how the media views Suicide Squad and how my teen kids and their friends see it

After they all saw it, they were talking about it around the house and how they absolutely loved it, being a nerdy dad myself I tried to join the conversation and especially since being a regular on this board and paying attention to things like critics and industry crap, I asked what they thought about how people are bashing it so hard and comparing it to the MCU flicks

First thing they said was "what the fuck is the MCU?", which I explained, they then said "oh those movies are gay" and went on to talk about how they haven't heard about anyone hating Suicide Squad and that everyone at school loves it and looked at me like a crazy old man, point being, do you think there is any correlation between what critics and old people think is cool and the younger generation liking the opposite or what's different than it? The MCU is pretty old at this point, my kids were young as shit when Iron Man came out, and to them it seems the MCU is old hat and the DCEU flicks are the cool thing

Does this mean in the future, despite the critics being well...very critical, these films will be held in high esteem? Cult classics if you will

>Meet the Spartans

Don't remind me of that thing. I just looked at the critics scores of it though. 2% on RT and 9% on metacritic? Though for some reason the 9% is only based on 11 critics. That's so weird though, because I thought it was a successful movie for some reason. Did it make money? This and the other one. Epic Movie. Were those kinds of movies actually popular?

I know when I was a kid I like SpyKids3D. looking back though, wow... it was just so bad.

Other movies I watched religiously include, Conan: the one with Arnold in it, some disney movie about a baseball player going to King Arthur's land through a hole in the ground, Star Wars Prequels, more shitty Disney original movies, and The Mummy 2.
>>
>>85570781
Which Conan? Barbarian wasn't that bad.

I honestly don't remember. Which is strange because I used to watch it so much that my mom would actually have to hide it from me. I just remember something about a maiden being sacrificed to a monster, and a lake with a crystal castle.

I work at a high school. Kids there wouldn't shut up about SS, most of them also liked BvS because it was "different" and more "brutal". I asked them about Civil War and the mcu, the answer was "lol the people who likes those movies are in their thirties at least and go see them with their kids"

But teenagers have shit taste and like being contrarian.

Yeah Episode 1 really isn't as bad as people say. It has some abominable things in it, and it was never ever going to live up to the sky-high expectations that people had going into it, which wasn't helped at all be the remastered cinematic rereleases that had just happened but it's really the thinnest end of the wedge.

Physical sets and costumes, careful use of CGI and the Podracing and Darth Maul fight are genuine iconic highlights not just of the film but of the Star Wars franchise on the whole.

That said, there are some godawful things in it. Watto, Jar Jar and the Nemoidians being horrendous racist stereotypes being the most egregious. They also needed to make sure new audiances KNEW that Palpatine and Sidious where one and the same or else it was going to seem like an asspull later on.

That said, all of this pales compared to just how bad Attack of the Clones was.
>Reliance on CGI when the technology is still uncanny valley as fuck
>Next to no character direction from George
>That dialogue
>The main A side plot of Obi-Wan Noir Detectiving it up makes NO SENSE from start to finish.
>It also has no fucking denoument at the end
>Misuse of Christopher Lee.
>Seriously that man has killed people George what are you doing.
>Seriously George Stahp

Not even John Williams could generate fucks to give for that film.

At least Episode 3 had that much, at least by Episode 3 the CGI was coming out of the uncanny valley, although nobody on earth wouldn't say the whole thing was a mess as they try to sync it up with ANH in the last 10 minutes.
You know things are bad when the big fight that has been foreshadowed for three films and multiple decades is overshone by a green muppet fighting Ian McDiarmid.
>>
>>85571475
I let me kids say fuck since I say it around them and yeah they're in their late teens, censoring them from swearing would be about as effective as trying to keep them from viewing porn or listening to "devil music", I just tell them not to use it at school or in front of other parents
>>
>>85569491
My 14yo sister doesn't really like what the DCEU is doing, and she says some of her friends agree (she said that right after watching BvS one of them said "please don't tell me you liked it!")

Arguably i might've influenced her, i showed her and my brothers the first 2 Donner movies and she loves them and husbando'd Reeve, but we also disagree on things since she loved how quirky and apparently cute Lex was despite being disappointed in the overall movie

My 10yo brother on the other hand doesn't care because he just hates Superman, he's in the 2boyscout4me phase, said he was glad Batman could beat the shit out of him and assemble the JL in his place

But they love the MCU, except my brother often mocks characters like Loki and Thor because i guess they're too beloved by girls. Some kids have shit taste, but i don't think it's much different from adults. Some will like X, some won't. Can't speak for Suicide Squad since we haven't seen it yet
>>
>>85569576
NO ONE liked those movies. They were like Man of Steel. TONS of people saw them, but EVERYONE left the theater knowing they were garbage.

In contrast people actually do enjoy Suicide Squad.
>>
>>85572001
>NO ONE liked those movies
Pic related

>EVERYONE left the theater knowing they were garbage
A lot of children saw those movies. I doubt anyone thinks they're high art, but plenty of people like them well enough and just get on with their lives. Years ago, maybe even a decade ago, there were jokes being made about how people liked the trilogy most that they grew up with, with the punchline being children of the PT liking Jar Jar.

I'm not saying they weren't bad films. They were pretty bad. Definitely worse than the OT, though it's not like those don't have similar problems that get glossed over and point to the worse ones the PT would have once Lucas was doing everything himself. But it's incredibly foolish to believe no one liked them. They liked them well enough to make prequel era EU fiction incredibly proliferated for over a decade once the setting was established.
>>
>>85569491
It's because of the inherent desire kids have to look more grown up which seems to have only gotten worse in the age of social media. It's the same reason kids move from Nintendo to Call of Duty much more quickly now. MCU is for the most part bright, colorful and funny while the DCU is dark, brooding and gloomy. It seems more adult to them despite it still just being comic book superheros so they gravitate towards it because they think liking it makes them seem more mature. That and kids usually have bad taste in media that changes from week to week. Some adults in the future will likely have nostalgia for these films because they watched them as kids but I doubt they be considered good ten years from now just because of that.
>>
>>85570781

None of this is anything new, nor does it mean something is automatically bad. I grew up near the end of the lifespan of the SNES and Genesis war, but even then Genesis was seen as cool while SNES was seen as kid stuff...despite arguably having a better collection of games in retrospect.

The same thing happened once PSX and N64 were out, PSX was for cool kids and N64 was kiddy stuff, in this case I think the PSX prevailed over the two....then there is something like Batman media vs Superman, Batman TAS was cool and dark and X-Men which featured the then most popular anti-hero of Wolverine and seemed to deal with more "mature" themes compared to Superman or the Fantastic Four which as far as most kids I knew considered to be pretty boring in comparison, and I can't say looking back that this was wrong either

This. The adventures that my Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan toys (usually accompanied by my bionicles) had were where all the affection I still hold for the prequels comes from.
If these kids are in their teens and genuinely love these movies, that's different. I still have a lot of genuine respect for much of the stuff I liked as a teenager. The DCEU must be tapping into the youth zeitgeist in a way that older people can't perceive.

Its genuinely the Transformers crowd that made Bay loads of money. Kids thought it was some amazing shit. I was young enough to like the first 2 Transformers movies thinking they were the shit.

Ofcourse growing up I realized they were shit by the time 3 and 4 rolled out but my cousins who were entering the same age I was when 1 and 2 came out loved it.

Most of their movies have budgets of 20 or 30 million and they fairly reliably got 80 million back. They're not popular, that's playing to a very specific crowd which is just big enough to get some return on investment if they spend next to nothing to make the films. Any other movie would consider '80 million' to be a dismal embarrassing failure.

I don't think it's a generation thing. I think they're just pandering towards a specific group of teenagers. The kind that don't really read the suicide squad comics or any comics of any kind. They don't really pay attention to the quality of the movies because they have absolutely no expectations and only go to purely hang out with their friends. I do know a few teens who shared most of the same views with the critics on the movie though
>>
>>85572075
I was dragged to episodes 1 and 2 as a child and I fucking hated them, not because of the poor characterization or nonsensical writing or any of the multitude of 'adult' things to hate, but because it was so fucking boring. Unbelievably boring. So much of the film is just two dudes looking at each other and talking in front of a green screen, talking about shit like the taxes on fucking trade federations that I neither understood nor gave a fuck about. I find it difficult to believe children enjoyed films with such emphasis on shit like trade federations and senate deliberations and standing around talking at each other.

Suicide Squad was clearly made for a younger crowd, who don't know any better and have no taste. It's smart marketing because you can trick them out of their money easier.
>>
>>85573353
I think we should also separate teen boys and teen girls here, because lots of the MCU flicks are clearly made for teen girls, and a large amount of girls have migrated to this board from /tv/, reddit, and tumblr

Yeah, Barbarian is actually a really strong film. I just rewatched it recently and actually enjoyed it more as an adult than I did as a kid because I actually understood some of the nuance.

Bitch, I've forgotten more about Transformers than you'll ever know, and *I* can tell you that Bayformers is edgelord as fuck. Remember the last movie, where every other line out of the Autobots' mouths is either about killing someone or something, or calling someone or something their "bitch"?

>do you think there is any correlation between what critics and old people think is cool and the younger generation liking the opposite or what's different than it?

You can't possibly be this naive and/or myopic?

Oh, who am I kidding, of course you can.

Yeah, there is a difference between what kids like and what adults like. It happens with every generation.

And just like you have a fondness for the shitty music, movies, shows, and fashion from your childhood (that your parents always hated), such will be the case for your kids.

Seeing kids under age 10 still like MCU I doubt it's a generation thing, I just think your kids and their mates are a bunch of faggots with no taste.

You obviously don't remember being a little kid seeing the original movie, thinking it was fucking awesome how a ton of bots got murdered while heavy metal music played and characters used curse words.

So, no, I don't believe you are a Transformers fan if you think Bayformers is "edgy", tasteless and ill conceived sure, but not "edgy" in the least.

Read my post again, its not a generation thing if kids younger than your kids like MCU. I never said your kids are under 10, I just said they're faggots with shit taste.
>>
>>85574399
And I'm saying the MCU is appealing to little kids, it's Batman and Robin
>>
>>85569491
>companyfags try and read the minds of the teenage audience, stealthily pretending to not be teenagers themselves, in order to justify their taste in capeshit.

You're a moron if you don't think that shit like MCU and The Force Awakens is popular among youth audiences. But SS directly appeals to a particular part of the teen audience that enjoys contrarianism and edge in contrast to the brightness of the MCU, which has started to show cracks with shit like Age of Ultron.

Imagine my surprise when i realized they were basically Star Wars in middle earth. The first one at least. I've read the sequel Eldest and bought Brisingr, but i never finished the latter because i was getting bored already after 2-3 chapters. I still have it sitting on my shelf doing nothing, i feel like it's a waste but at the same time i suspect reading it will be a waste of time. Was it particularly dark or something? I vaguely remember the book opening with a description of some evil ritual that involved cutting off limbs

Your children swear to you? Do they have to respect to you as an authority figure? You are raising your kids wrong.
>>
The first time is always special. Kids haven't seen all the earlier stuff that you have seen so they don't have the same perspective. Even if they then later go back and watch older stuff, it's not going to wow them the same way.

Also you probably like a bunch of stuff that your parents didn't like.

in the future these films will be forgotten or mocked to the same degree as things like the schumacher batman films, or the 90s Flash TV show. It's pop culture, none of it matters and none of it will "last."

I just rewatched the movie a couple days ago and all that stands out is Optimus ripping Megatron's head and spine out

These movies are sensory overload, and it's tiring trying to keep track of everything happening on screen. The 4th one in particular felt mind-numbingly bloated

>>
>>85574573
You're wrong, you dumbass. The figures these films pull in and the critical response to them show pretty clearly that they're enjoyed across several generations.

Your kids just have terrible taste. They're probably in that awkward upper teen area where they think shit like 300 is good.
