In the book, the protagonist bluffs the Mutant by claiming to be the Colossal Elastic Boy, who can only be destroyed by acid. The shapeshifting Mutant changes into a wave of acid which the protagonist dodges. The Mutant can't reform himself when he changes into a liquid, and thus he's gone forever and the protagonist returns home. He sees his latest comic delivery sitting on the table, but after everything he's just been through, he ignores it in favor of getting a slice of cake. However, he cuts his hand slicing the cake, sees he's bleeding four-color ink, and realizes it might be a good idea to look at that new comic anyway...

The fact that the Mutant was hounding him at every moment and could be anything was fear-inducing. If the concept was handled by a more mature writer, I'd imagine the villian would slowly invade every aspect of the protagonist' life. Leaving hints of something being off and the vague feeling of being watched before more drastic moves were made.
