>One night, a guest at the Iceberg Lounge was caught cheating at poker. The Penguin tortured this man in full view of everyone. A friend of the man grabbed a beer bottle, smashed it on a table, and attacked, driving the bottle had into the Penguin's face.

>As the Penguin screamed, the attacker and his friend were dragged away to a private torture room. Cobblepot was examined by the finest doctors in Gotham City but the prognosis was always the same; removing the bottle could be fatal.

HAHHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAAH
>>
I kinda hate modern, English, not fat, not pointy nosed Penguin

Like he could literally be a different character at this point. But I guess that's what happens when you keep trying to riff on the same premise for 50+ years.
>>
Why isn't this comic canon?
>>
I know this has always been something that splits people, but I really like the imagery of a broken bottle as a monocle. Like it's the perfect metaphor for someone who wants to be high class, but isn't. Maybe it's not right for the Penguin, but I dig it.
>>
Why couldn't it just be a monocle? A broken beer bottle is just stupid and needlessly edgy.
>>
>>85518523
Wait, they grabbed THAT end of the bottle?
>>
>>85518548
Yeah, especially since it reads like a marketing director just wrote "Doctor Who + Loki" on a white board.
>>
>>85518523
I wonder who those brave men were.
>>
>wrong end of the bottle

They just wanted to make his monocle a beer bottle so bad they didn't give a shit about what made sense or not
>>
We all know The Penguin wears a monocle, but why? Monocles look silly, why not wear glasses or contacts. We know a lot about The Joker's face, and how he got it back, but we know nothing about The Penguin's Monocle. This gives a reason as to why a man would even wear outdated eye-wear, it is very silly but so is pretending to be a penguin.
>>

Constantine stop making fun of the ugly midget.
>>
>>85518647
Again Penguin is supposed to be a parody of high class society. The monocle is just a cosmetic thing thats carried over from numerous incarnations. But I have seen Penguin in regular glasses too.
>>
>>85518671
>laughably grimdark
>laughably
Emphasis right there. Nygma's joke about the baby was funny precisely because of how edgy it was.

Hasn't English organized crime historically been a lot more tracksuit and a lot less monocles and tailored suits?

It's like they wanted to make him into an Italian stereotype but then decided against it because that's what all of the named non-supervillain criminals in Gotham are
>>
>>85518523
That's really stupid.
>>
>>85518805
those games are pretty good

except Origins, which traded in good game design for QTEs and a slightly more sensible story

At least when Knight decided to bolt on a bunch of Burnout and Battlezone shit they didn't ruin the existing stealth and fighting fun
>>
>>85518657
Penguin didn't go to a Gotham prep school in the Arkhamverse. He went to a boarding school in England and abandoned it to learn crime on the streets.
>>
>>85518898
Origins had the best story out of them and I forgive every flaw it has because of it.
>>
Arkham Penguin is cool. I like that the monocle really only comes up in the Gotham city stories, rather than the actual game.
>>
Guys youre really overthinking this
>Penguin desperately wants to prove hes high class so he dresses in expensive suits
>Rocksteady decides against the monocle because of how outdated it is
>Choose to make it a result from a bar fight to reflect Penguins criminal/low brow activities that are often hidden from the public
Its still silly but I do like the accent
>>
>>85518523
Why didnt they cut the bottom of the bottle? That way he could at least see properly.
>>
>>85518964
glass would get in his eye I guess.
>>
>>85518857
That is true of all organized crime, not just italians. Most people are tracksuit-wearing losers who aren't good for anything except beating people up. The higher ups who delude themselves into thinking they're businessmen wear suits. The best example is probably the yakuza. On the low ranks they're incredibly trashy street gangs, the higher ups are borderline corporate
>>
>>85518964
Well its glass, so perhaps altering it or fucking with it in any way would result in the bottle shattering and leading to further complications. Although now Penguin is fucked if he ever gets punched in the face
>>
>>85518986
>borderline
They are corporate at this point, most don't even bother hiding it.
>>
>>85518523
>going for the face and not his blubbery neck
Rookie mistake.
>>
>>85519009
Which he has.

Multiple times.

You can guess by who.
>>
>>85518980
They could have him lie down with his face facing the floor, then carefully break the glass
>>
Really wished they had Nolan North try out that penguin laugh more often.

He's in Knight, Origins and City and the only time he does it is when he's freezing the cop in Arkham City.
>>
>>85518805
No one is shitting on your games anon, but these games deserve to be called on for being a bit too dark, as in, it's actually pretty funny and not dark at all sometimes.
>>
Seriously, who the fuck smashes the TOP of a bottle to use as a weapon? Shit makes no sense. At least have him trip after getting punched by Batman, landing face-first on a broken bottle standing up in the alley.
>>
>>85519049
Or they could fuck his ass until it pops out.
>>
>>85519049
Except the bottle is embedded deep in his skull, so any cracks risk broken shards in his head.
>>
>>85518592
>>85518548
The only one thats appeared in is the telltale Batman game tho
Gotham Penguin has a pointed, birdy nose, waddles, is starting to fatten up and isnt english
>>
>>85518557
You know what else, nowadays, is something likely to be worn by a lower class pleb in a clumsy attempt to emulate high society? A regular monocle.
>>
>>85518922
This. The Joker thing was obvious as fuck(really, Black Mask is planting present-shaped bombs under the police department?), but it still managed to have a better story than all the ones after Asylum. Not to mention the voice-acting/script was better as well.

Arkham Knight had a shit story AND you couldn't really enjoy the other stuff when you had to use the tank for 60% of the game. Mad Max was more fun for that shit.
>>
>>85519148
Gotham has never been a "modern" city though. Metropolis is modern, it's new and bright. Gotham is ancient, old money to the core.
>>
it's a nice touch you can see the embedded bottle in detective mode

it clearly is stuck in part of his brain. Maybe that's why he talks like that.

>>
>>85519183

Monocles are so dated that you don't exactly have to be "modern" for them to come across as a clumsy faux pas

Do any of the Gotham businessmen or old money we see in any of the modern materials still wear monocles?
>>
>>85518572

Right?

What a dumb fucking idea.
>>
>>85519266
Maybe the friend of the man was just that dumb.
>>

In Arkham Knight there are Thugs that say Penguin is putting on a fake accent.
>>
>>85519375
Pfft. There's thugs who say they've seen an actual bat man flying around as well! They're bloody loonies!
>>
>>85519240
>Do any of the Gotham businessmen or old money we see in any of the modern materials still wear monocles?
No, but it's one of those things that's been grandfathered in for Penguin. In 1941 monocles weren't in style anymore, but it was still possible (though uncommon) to see the super upper-crust old money types wearing them. Monocles had become stereotypical by then but if you saw a rich guy wearing one you wouldn't think "what the fuck is with this guy."

For a more modern example, think of the mohawk. It's not really a common thing to see anymore even among punks, but a couple of decades ago it was common enough that it's become a visual shorthand for "punk." If you created a character now and wanted him to look punk, a mohawk would make the visual connection even if it's not something you see often anymore.

>>
>>85519945
I think you mean twice as classy
>>
>>85519883

Well I'm just saying, it's kind of fortuitous. When the penguin first appeared with the monocle and the suits and everything, it came across as a criminal emulating high society. You could keep the regular monocle nowadays, and have it come across as a criminal trying to emulate high society, except being inept and clumsy at it. My original point was replying to the poster that said that the beer bottle served as a good symbol for someone incredibly low-class trying and failing to present themselves as high-class. A regular monocle comes off that way now, too. If you see someone with a monocle, your first thought isn't "Oh, they must be rich" it's "Oh, it's a joke or a gag", and then if they act serious about it, you think "Who is this guy trying to scam?"
>>

Is this game as disappointing as anons make it out to be?

I'm playing this series now and I really liked the first two outside of some of the corny edgelord shit that's being brought up in this thread.
>>
>>85520381
The only real reason that I can think of for why people give it a lot of shit is because of the kinda botched PC port, but that got fixed, so it's all good

you what
>>
>>85520381
it's disappointing because they advertised the game as about batman vs a bunch of assassins hired by black mask, but it's just another batman vs the joker snorefest.

Same with Arkham Knight. Too much Joker shit
>>
>>85518523

That's so edgey it's comedic.

Actually I think it's just going overboard with that 'ghetto' aesthetic in the Arkham games.

But it was a "bar fight" in full view of everyone in a casino that he owns. It doesn't tell us anything about the character we didn't already know, namely that he's a vicious bastard who owns & operates a casino. Also, kinda hard to hide something JAMMED INTO YOUR FUCKING EYESOCKET from the public.
>>
>>85520605
>>85518523

I like how there is no mention of the thugs actually helping Penguin. Imagine him rolling on the ground while the thugs beat up the other guy.

Good job guys, not like the boss needs help there.
>>
>>85518657

There was an incredibly contrived and stupid explanation about him being sent to school in England and him running away and joining Cockney gangs.

It was a pretty obvious case of someone wanting their "spin" on the Penguin to be a Guy Ritchie ripoff but not wanting to sacrifice the Cobblepot / Wayne feud because that's the only thing interesting about modern Penguin so they just did both because no one will notice because vidya games are for children and manchildren.

Still disappointed in Dini for being involved with this trash desu
>>
>>85520475
The gameplay is more varied than the previous installations, without forcing you to enter a tank every other minute. You can't ask for more, really.
>>
>>85520999
>forcing you to enter a tank every other minute

???
>>
>>85521036
Anon is still bitter over Knight.
and so am I
>>
>>85520475
It's not. They Fucking ruined it in origins with one simple fuck up. Your counters no longer cancel animations, meaning if you start to throw a punch, then some goon decides to hit you from behind, you can't do shit about It. It makes any move, ie most of the fun techniques, too slow and drawn out to use in a fight without getting hit and having your free flow ruined. Some fags say it just means you have to play more defensively but that completely defeats the design and purpose of the whole combat system.

Also the boss fights suck.

Also the map sucks.
>>
>>85521036
Pretty much every addition in Arkham Knight was bat-tank related. I don't actually remember anything about the fighting that was new, except the Riddler-bots and multi-takedowns. And the multi-takedowns were lame. Maybe I'm just forgetting the improvements because of all the time spent in the tank.

>>85521124
Git gud fagit.
>>
>>85518572
I always thought of it as the guy swung the neck-end of the bottle as a weapon, failed, and then slammed Penguin's face into a table with the bottom-end of the bottle laying on it so it got stuck like it did.

>>85518647
>>85518647
>why not wear glasses or contacts
Maybe I'm mistaken, but wasn't a monocle meant specifically for people who needed correction in only one eye? If that's the case, I suppose he could just use a single contact these days, but not glasses.
>>
>>85521278
On the subject of not needing a monocle for corrective purposes:

>The antiquarian Philipp von Stosch wore a monocle in Rome in the 1720s, in order to closely examine engravings and antique engraved gems, but the monocle did not become an article of gentlemen's apparel until the nineteenth century.

I suppose it has a double purpose for Penguin then, both as part of his gentleman's facade and as a means to inspect fine details of the materials he moves illegally through Gotham.

I'd like to point out the festering mess than the penguins face would be in these circumstances.

Think about it: it can't have been a clean bottle, so there was still some traces of beer in there. Yeast and shit, now trapped in a bubble with a source of water and flesh that regularly gets exposed to sunlight and is constantly kept warm by body heat.

This is the sort of shit that results in an absolute nightmare infection that turns half his face into necrotic mush.

I know I'm gonna get called /co/mblr SJW etc. etc. so I'm braced for the (Yous)s but I just finished Arkham City and it is noticeable and stupid how literally every character in the game with a vagina has to be called a bitch or a whore or a slut at least once every time they appear on camera.

I probably wouldn't have noticed except my gf and my female roommate are both TAS fans and it was sold to me as having writing as strong as TAS but every time we played it was as embarrassingly juvenile as any other manchild EPIK VIDYA made by /v/irgins for /v/irgins.

If network censorship is what forced Dini & co. to craft actually strong well written villains with arcs and motivations instead of just showing how EEEEVIIIILLL they are by calling Selina or Ivy a skank in every scene then I guess I'm glad for network censorship.
>>
>>85523129
I never heard whore or slut

Just lots and lots of Bitch.

It was noticably absent in Knight.

Her kiss takedown is still the stupidest.
>>
>>85523129
>Implying Dini's at fault

The only game 100% Dini is Asylum, from City onwards it was Dini (main story) plus Rocksteady own writers (rest of the game)
>>
>>85518922
This. People shit on origins only because they expected a second coming of Christ after City, and expect they got a game that's quite similar in quality. It has become a meme at this point, but Origins has the best story, soundtrack, gameplay and atmosphere in my opinion. And personally I had no issues with any serious bugs.
>>
>>85523129
>If network censorship is what forced Dini & co. to craft actually strong well written villains with arcs and motivations
TwoFace is the only main antagonist that calls them bitches. The rest are just nameless murdering/raping goons. No one gives a shit about them and I don't think I ever seen nameless goons have arcs or motivations. They literally there to be bad and get their ass kick by the protagonist.

>I've always loved it and it made me appreciate Nolan North's range a smidge more

Does the fact that I'm not a native English speaker have to do anything with this?

It's far from my favorite version of Oswald but I like how no-nonsense and ruthless he is in these games. It makes sense for him to act composed and dignified when he has business to attend to, that's his whole character, I know. But in these games, because of how dire everything is, you only see the "bad" side of him. And I think this is a pretty good representation of that.

But yes, that broken bottle business is stupid.
>>
Everything about Arkham Penguin is so needlessly edgy. It's so ridiculous, you can't take it seriously.
>>
>>85520475
It's pretty much identical to City. So it's good, but completely lacks originality. Also, there are fewer playable characters for challenge mode, and the electric glove things make combat even easier than normal.

>being a contrarian who embraces something just because another board opposes it

Arkham Knight had the most boring addition to gameplay because you had to keep switching to the car(and you couldn't even use the skins outside of racing because of the guns and retarde grapnel bullshit) and the story was so obvious(despite coming from nowhere if you follow the games)that there was never a shadow of doubt over the "twist". Not to mention how on PC it was an utter fiasco with how shit the port was to begin with, how they then decided to handle that problem, and how they finally tried to appease the people who'd pre-ordered it by giving away free non-giftable copies of the other Arkham games on Steam... As if someone who pre-ordered Arkham Knight wouldn't already have played the other games. Especially with how they made it into a sales-trick by telling everyone else that they'd also get the other games if they bought Arkham Knight before Christmas, at a reduced price from what the pre-orderers paid.

Arkham Knight was an abject failure compared to the other games, and it deserves to be the most disliked even if it did have parts that were better than parts from the other games. I'm still going to rebuy it the next time I feel like playing 100%ing it. For a fraction of the cost I spent the first time around.

10/10 - I took the bait.
>>
>>85524196
Knight gets most shit because Batmobile. Which really isn't a fair complaint because there's nothing really wrong with it on a technical level. It's not like the gameplay is broken or something. It's just most people don't want to use a Batank when they can be a Batninja. I can understand if people don't like the gameplay on a personal level, but when I see people say it's shit because the Batmobile, is when I feel they are being unfair. I spent a lot of time in Knight and at first I didn't like the tank but after awhile I found it fine and even appreciate that gave me more things to do, so I didn't feel like I was just walking from one freeflow combat/predator segment to the next.
>>
>>85524616
>appreciate that gave me more things to do

All it did was give you the same copy-pasted tank-battles, though. The races were all Riddler challenges as I remember it. Except for the parts where you were driving on roof-tops and rappelling with the damn thing, which was just terrible from a writing point of view and would have been more enjoyable/made more sense with a batbike or batjet.

My problem was never the addition of the batmobile. It was how much space it took in the gameplay. Too many riddler challenges were car-based padding instead of riddle-based, and there were too damn many tank-fights and challenges. They even made the Deathstroke boss-fight into another tank battle instead of making it unique! The parts where you were hanging off of walls to rotate cylinders to gain access was an unbelievably forced way to make the batmobile have a bigger part. Making it a jumping/gliding challenge with a gadget taking the place of the car would have been much less clunky in execution.
>>
Penguin is one of the most underrated Bat rogues.

When he showed up in Valentine's Catwoman I was like "oh shit".
>>
>>85523341
That doesn't absolve Dini from how shitty the overall story in Arkham City was.

Timm and Dini are pretty weak on their own unless they're working together.
>>
>>85525099
That's fine but but there's nothing really wrong with them technically, it's more of a personal thing. I liked using the Batmobile. I didn't have a problem with the Tank fights, Chases, Riddles and using the Batmobile as a gadget. But face it after Origins the game mechanics were starting to get stale. If we removed the Batmobile gameplay it's would suffer from the same problems Origins had. The lack of innovation. The only way to keep Batman fresh after Knight is to do a compete overhaul of the game mechanics. I will admit that they wasted the boss fights on the Tank tho. The DLC gives you more normal ones at least.
>>
>>85525560
That because Rocksteady kept asking Dini to rewrite the script. Dini by himself is pretty good, the thing with Arkham is that Rocksteady had many ideas that were against what Dini had in mind
>>
>>85520226
It's not even comic book canon. Only in the Arkham games.
>>
>>85525671

>>
>>85525763
He said during one of Kevin Smith Fatman on Batman episodes (I guess the one before he talked about Dark Night book)

I'd say that his main forte is DC characters, but that just me, if they sucked they sucked
>>
>>85525637
Spending the time to add more gadgets and enemies with special moves would have kept the game a whole lot less stale than spending the time working the batmobile into so many parts of the game, though. They fighting-stuff and sneaking-stuff they did add were pretty much all better additions than the drone battles where you just side-stepped things while shooting at other things.

You don't revitalise a stale fighting-system by adding another fighting-system that's got less variation than the last one on-top of the old one.

>Spending the time to add more gadgets and enemies with special moves
You have at least 5 new enemies on top the preexisting ones from past games.I don't even know what other type of enemies they could have put in. They cover everything now that they also got guys that can heal fallen comrades.
>You don't revitalise a stale fighting-system by adding another fighting-system that's got less variation than the last one on-top of the old one.
Knight pretty much Refined the gameplay to as much as they could. The only way to revitalize it truly would to change it's mechanics. And doing some would make the game feel much different. So tank combat is not really "revitalize" the preexisting Freeflow combat as it is mixing things up.

Former Arkham City inmate here. Cobblepot can be a bit of a pain at times, but he's the best boss once you've proven yourself. The tricky part was surviving his tournament. >>
>>85518805
You do. Arkham City is one of the worst of the "let's make every game Open World but not put anything in that world" genre. The level design is bad. The combat doesn't suit the open world since its based around stealth takedowns and the open world forces you into fistfights. Individual gadgets are useless in combat. There's an entire section that's a Legend of Zelda ice platform puzzle.

It's terrible.
>>

My opinion of the like two hours I played of Asylum is a less exaggerated version of this.

I liked the stealth I guess. The cutscenes were nice too. And so was the voice acting.

Rest of the game bored me Especially the fighting and the bosses. It just felt like a way, way souped down 3D Zelda with ok stealth thrown in from time to time and really well directed and put together but ultimately gimmicky and boring villain encounters. Killer Croc was mind numbing, and I remember getting sick of the spammy thug fights FAST. I guess the Asylum was nice looking too but the illusion of openness was created by adding those pointless Riddler collectables. The game was still a linear romp like a 3D Zelda, and I'm not terribly fond of those to begin with.

But I guess my opinion doesn't count much, I just can't get into modern games. That said I watched most of City's cut scenes and every game over screen in the series and I can't help but be glad these games exist nonetheless.

Anybody picked up the Batman: Arkham trades that are essentially "[insert Batman villain]'s greatest hits"? I've got Riddler's and it's great, so I'm looking forward to grabbing some of the others. Amazon's got a Man-Bat collection listed for pre-order, but this is the description:

>One of Batman's oldest enemies, Man-Bat is the epitome of Gotham's seedy underbelly, with his shady business deals and deadly mobster crimes. This new anthology collection features some of Penguin's greatest stories throughout the decades as a leading Batman super-villain!

I chuckled.

>>85531643
I never got around to picking that up, though I grabbed most of the others. The Freeze and Riddler ones were pretty good.
>>
>>85532524

>>
>>85531427
>Embedded in the brain
So exactly like this case?
>>
>>85532704
Those cases don't involve the person having a living where he regularly gets punched in the face by other crime bosses, cops or a roided guy in a bat suit.

Any chance of removing it would be better than leaving it in and waiting for someone to tap it.
>>
>>85532704

No not like this at all.

As in a little sliver somehow getting in the brain with the wound closing around in (see how fucking rare this is?), not a gigantic bottle sticking out of someone's eye socket. I liked the whole bottle monocle thing for when Penguin was in Arkham City, it could easily be handwaved that he got it when stuck in there and that there aren't any doctors there to remove it. Kind of like how Deadshot has a ramshackle look to him since he disguised himself as a prisoner and had to smuggle his stuff into Arkham City. Him still having the bottle monocle by the time of Knight is absolutely retarded, especially with the way they try to explain it.

>>
>>85523637

I didn't hate Orgins at all, but when it dropped the ball it dropped it hard. I was so hyped for Lady Shiva and it's one of the laziest battles in the game. Electrocutioner gets an update and a setup for a great fight and it's over in seconds. And for once Black Mask gets a moment of not looking like a chump only to get punked out of the spotlight as badly as Hugo did, which I'm still mad about.

Other than that it was a lot of fun. I still need to play Knight, holding off till I get a console since the pc version sounded like a trainwreck.
>>
>>85520381

It really lacks the polish of other games. When it first came out it was buggy, and i couldn't finish the Mr. Freeze DLC because of a bug.

By now the major bugs have been fixed but you can tell the game wasn't as polished as Asylum or city. Which doesn't mean it's not a fun game, it's just not great.
>>
>>85520428
I'll give you that, but a reason why I liked AO's plot so much is that you get to play in the actual Gotham City. Not even an evacuated Gotham, but Gotham during any other Christmas. That's as close as we'll ever get to playing as Batman during an average night in the Arkham Games.
>>
>>85531401

>>
I'd like to point out that the Arkham games are 10x better on hard. On normal they're the most boring casual shit imaginable.

The fist fights require actual reflexes and the ability to mixup gadgets for crowd control, rather than just button mashing. Stealth sections are require you to think quickly, although the contextual takedowns do make things frustrating at times.
>>
>>85520428
The joker shit is the best part of Arkham Knight though. Jason Todd and his tacticool crew are kinda boring.

The idea of Joker splitting into 5 beings resembling different aspects of his personality is a cool idea. Game should've started with the AK/Scarecrow shit, but I would've liked more of a story to develop about the 5 Jokers. Maybe a turf war between them and the other villains with Batman intervening and AK manipulating the situation?
>>
>>85537680
Come on, it's going to take an extreme amount of crippling and scarring to make that ugly. Not to mention, it kind of ruins the "Penguin was mocked for his appearance as a child" origin. He doesn't have to be Tim Burton levels of deformed, but the Penguin should at the very least be homely to look at.
>>
>>85537879
I fucking hate this shit. I mean, we've got three games centered around the Joker as the main villain and when he's finally dead you want him to be in the spotlight yet again? That, and the idea of a "Joker virus" that turns the infected into Joker is fucking retarded. Seriously, how the fuck is a disease supposed to turn a person's skin white and hair green when that shit was the result of chemicals?
>>
>>85518898
>Orgins

>>
>>85538060
Not in the spotlight, but there. Arkham City had both Joker and Strange competing for the main villain spot with Joker getting the last laugh. I wasn't a big fan of City's plot since the ending felt kinda retarded and written for shock value, but the twin threat dynamic was compelling.

AK should of been the main villain overall, but he was kinda dull and needed something to contrast him. I dunno, maybe fighting military dudes the whole game left a bad taste in my mouth. Every other Arkham game has subplots fighting various members of Batman's rogue gallery.

Since we've beaten all the famous villains so far, they could've used the Joker spawn as replacements for the likes of Two Face, Penguin, Bane etc.
