I have a feeling the writer tried way to hard to create the "I'm a dick, but audiences will love me" type of character like Ryoma from Getter Robo or Guts from Berserker.
But the writer probably didn't notice that what made those characters great for their audiences where their subtle nuances beneath this surface level personality (such as how Guts' personality is merely just him disguising his true feelings and humane behaviour).
