The only part of the design that unsettles me is the double-forearm, but most fusions have something like that- Sardonyx has the crazy rotating torso, Malachite has all kinds of limbs, Alexandrite(? the Amethyst + Pearl + Garnet) has the horrifying face. I always thought fusions were supposed to be a mix between unsettling and cool and awe-inspiring. So in that light, I think Smoky Quartz is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from Steven + Amethyst.

SQ looked alright in certain frames of her debut, and by her second appearance I wasn't even bothered. Then again, the second appearance was significantly more round and overall more pleasant to look at.

I feel like the only person who likes the one double arm. It works so well with her yo-yo, which has been established as her "thing".

The face is cute, and I don't mind the overly rounded body type that everyone else is BAWWWing over, but I would like to see more "fantasy" features like different color skin (where did they get brown from peach + lavender?) or hair. Also, I really don't like the three-arm thing, I think it looks like lazy bullshit and doesn't make any sense given that literally all other fusions have multiple fully-jointed arms.

At first I didn't really like Smoky's appearance - it wasn't anything like I expected steven and amethyst to look like, but from the very beginning Smoky's personality and voice were even better than my expectations.

Now I find the visual design growing on me, probably because the other 2 things I mentioned make the character feel "real", and the visuals are associated with that.

Smoky's got jokes.

Regardless, we almost only ever see him when he's completely geared up, and it's what he looks like in the fight with Spike I linked. Smoky is only totally ball-shaped in certain frames of her first appearance, and the initial turbo-fat look is to make the times when she's ball-shaped stand out less, design-wise.

It's because Steven's clothes stay the same through the fusion process- it's just like with Stevonnie.

The clothes aren't part of him, so his subconscious mind doesn't really know what to do with them during fusion aside from keeping them in the correct place on the body. This subconscious confusion probably translated over to Amethyst's subconscious and interfered with whatever process usually decides the new fusion's outfit, resulting in it just being their clothes layered over each other.
