But he decided to do that in-continuity with the rest of the titles.

So he turned the Joker into a slasher villain (because in his mind, the Joker finally going nuts and killing the Bat-senpai was how they'd all die) and had his psychologically torture the Bat-senpai... which they somehow blamed on Bruce or something and caused the 'family' to die with everyone moving to different cities and avoiding everyone else.

Then he proceeded to tell his same story about the New Batfam in a context where it made little sense.

(This is also the reason Tim Drake was kept from appearing in the Bat-titles for years, relegating tor Lobdell hell in the Titans. They're all metaphorically dead, see?)
