NEW X-MEN #117

>Written by Grant Morrison, art by Ethan Van Sciver and Tim Townsend, cover by Frank Quitely.

>As protesters lay siege to the Xavier Institute, The Beast makes an astonishing discovery -- one that will have immediate and terrible repercussions for him... and for billions of others. Meanwhile, at a time when the team most needs to stay together, Cyclops and Phoenix continue to drift apart.

>32 pages, $2.25.

The world is still an innocent place. Movies are overtaken by The Princess Diaries and American Pie 2. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back opens on the 21st. Kevin Smith is beloved by everyone from Green Arrow fans to American Pie fans, but we'll get to that next thread.

BIll Jemas with Joe Quesada's aid has been violently shaking the entire Marvel's catalog. It's mostly seen on X-Men titles now, but in a year's time every second book will be a gem (yes I'm biased). Axel Alonso, an ex-Vertigo editor, was appointed the new X-Men editor and practically brought all the hot Vertigo writers with him.

This is the beginning of what will later be unofficially called NuMarvel--and mined for ideas for both those billion dollar movies and publishing practices of various relaunches since 2011.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #9

>Written by Mark Millar, art by Tom Raney and Scott Hanna, cover by Adam Kubert.

>While Professor X and his X-Men are "re-educated" in the Weapon X facility, the nation's most dangerous spy is asked to lead a group of Weapon X mutants on a top secret, Third World mission. His name is Nick Fury -- and he's none too comfortable with how the government is treating his super-powered colleagues. But with the interests of the Free World at stake, does he have a choice?

UNCANNY X-MEN #397

>Written by Joe Casey, art and cover by Ian Churchill.

>Chamber feels the squeeze of tabloid scrutiny as the X-Men continue their search for the helpless mutants surviving in the London underground. Will they reach them before the unstoppable genetic cleanser -- Mister Clean -- does? More mysteries behind this sadistic new adversary are revealed in chapter three of "Poptopia."

>32 pages, $2.25.

Back then Joe Casey really wanted to be the "new Morrison" so he bought a house (X-Men and Superman were two of the biggest franchises back then so he made a load of money on em) and did a shit ton of drugs

The joke here is by this time he's already written the books Morrison will only attempt to touch in 5-10 years time.

X-TREME X-MEN #4

>Written by Chris Claremont, art and cover by Salvador Larroca.

>Still reeling from their tragic first encounter with the mysterious and deadly Vargas, the X-Treme team renews their quest to find Destiny's missing Books of Truth. But what they don't know is that this enigmatic enemy already has a volume. Now that Vargas holds the road map to their very future, how can they hope to find the other books before he does? And soon a wild card will be dealt -- a joker in their deck that could change everything.

>32 pages, $2.99.

Admit I've beat off to this cover.

I have mixed feelings about the Quesada/Jemas era but I can't deny it's one of the most incredible shakeups ever seen at a company.

Marvel had been doing things in pretty much the same style since the '70s. X-Men right up to 2001 was always written in Claremont's style even if Claremont wasn't writing. (When Joe Casey suggested doing some issues without thought balloons and captions the editors literally laughed at him.)

And now everything changes, the style of writing is "modernized" both in getting rid of the old-fashioned devices (captions, thought balloons), the old hyper-compressed soap opera style, etc.

Some of the modernization may have gone overboard, Jemas sometimes had too dogmatic ideas about what every book should be like, but I can't deny that something like this shake-up was what Marvel was long overdue for.
>>
>>85474387
Whatever happened to Sage, anyway?
>>
>>85474387
This is one of the things I don't really like about this era, that the covers were mostly just pin-up posters of individual characters and it could be hard or even impossible to know what the issue was about.

Again, probably necessary to course correct but it went a bit overboard.

THE EXILES #3

>Written by Judd Winick, art and cover by Mike McKone and Mark McKenna.

>Reeling from last issue's tragedy, the Exiles must take part in one of the most infamous moments in X-Men history: the trial of Phoenix. But this time it's the Exiles who are the bad guys. Hey, maybe that's why Wolverine is so mad. All this, plus a new member joins Blink's band of reality-hopping mutants.

>32 pages, $2.25.

>>85474384
By 2003 the comics got too edgy, not in a 4chan way but in aan actually dictionary way--they were literally too cool and experimental for executives' tastes. Jemas got the boot and so did most of the talent.
>>
>>85474456
Not that this would have been a good thing to base decisions on at the time, but this is especially frustrating when going through back-issue bins since a lot of the covers are non-memorable (hi, first part of JMS's Spidey run).

On the other hand, look at that Uncanny #397 cover.
>>
>>85474560
I think I'm with the executives when it comes to some of the titles (and forcing every book to have upper/lowercase lettering and such).

I think of Jemas like Jim Shooter, he fixed what needed fixing, and then went on trying to fix everything anyway.

>He's fought the worst despots ever to walk the Earth. But now Nathan Summers is about to meet his strangest adversary, whose origins he could have never dreamed. Who is Old Man Coll? And what terrible lesson wil he impart to Cable?

>32 pages, $2.25.

>Written by Brian K. Vaughan, art and cover by Mark Texeira and Jimmy Palmiotti.

>The mutant named Scott Summers heads to the Great White North, but what villains wait for him in the snowy lands of Canada? And who is their mysterious benefactor who will stop at nothing to ensure Cyclops' demise? The leader of the X-Men has gone solo - but can he survive on his own? Find out in the first issue of this all-new four-part adventure.

>32 pages, $2.50.

Morrison stays on X-Men. Bendis probably still gets on Avengers but isn't allowed to No More Mutants. Gwen doesn't fuck Norman. Probably new wilder initiatves we couldn't even think of.

ROGUE #1

>Written by Fiona Avery, art by Aaron Lopresti and Randy Emberlin, painted cover by Julie Bell.

>When Rogue joined the X-Men, they said they could help her, could make her a better person by understanding her powers. She's faced a fatal, brutal, mutant power, which must be controlled at all costs. The unanswered questions are: how do the X-Men actually help her? How does she cope with being a mutant with a terrible, potentially fatal power... does she view herself as a hero or a menace or a fraud? How does she cope with her fears of abandonment from her past experiences as an orphaned child? These questions, and others, will be addressed in the course of this series, which will see Rogue thrust into wildly different situations -- crises that will demand she learn how to trust herself, as well as others. Unencumbered by monthly continuity, this all-new adventure will give readers an in-depth portrait of one of Marvel's most popular characters.

>32 pages, $2.50.

Fiona Avery is Straczynki's plus one. Brian Reed to his Brian Bendis, if you will. Or Millar to his Morrison. Johns to his Goyer. But the first example is better because like Reed she disappeared he fuck out of comics.

THE BROTHERHOOD #4

>Written by X, art by Leonardo Manco and Jimmy Palmiotti, cover by Barry Windsor- Smith.

>An excerpt from the ransom note delivered to millionare Malcolm Reeves: "We have your daughter, and though she was born to be one of us, we'll return her to you only after our demands have been met. For the hate-spewing bigot you are, we know you donate millions to butcher-doctors that perform untold atrocities on young mothers and their 'unwanted' babies. Now the Brotherhood would like to see your generosity. If you don't contribute to our worthy cause, you can be assured of two things. One, the world will know that your only offspring is what you've conspired to kill: a mutant! And two, you will see your daughter again, when she returns -- as your assassin!"

Sadly I'm not even sure what the "original" numbering would be anymore for the more heavily relaunched titles. Like, what all would count as Avengers #505 and so on? How do you deal with New Avengers when Avengers starts running concurrently with it?

Plus: a pin-up section by Avengers alumni, including a never-before-published piece by Barry Windsor-Smith... who also illustrates the cover.

>80 pages, $5.99.

That reminds me, in couple of months we're getting the NUFF SAID initiative.

These projects must have been in the pipeline before Quesada took over. The late '90s was full of nostalgia projects.

Nostalgia would not make a full comeback until around 2004-5 or so (when we got stuff like Spider-Man/Human Torch). Ever since then the nostalgia style comes and goes.

STARTLING STORIES: BANNER #2

>Written by Brian Azzarello, art and cover by Richard Corben.

>Continuing Startling Stories, the new imprint that lets the industry's top talents cut loose on their favorite heroes, Up first: the Hulk as interpreted by Brian Azzarello and Richard Corben. Having located the green-skinned monstrosity in the New Mexico desert, Doc Sampson prepares his troops for a High Noon showdown. With a 1,000 Blackhawk helicopters at his disposal, the mysterious government agent has a formidable arsenal, but he's brought along a secret weapon -- just to be safe.

>32 pages, $2.99.

This is a nice little story.

STARTLING STORIES was a short-lived imprint that included FF Unstable Molecules and Peter Bagge's Spider-Man. Did they want a spiritual successor to Coober Skeber #2? I guess Marvel Knights were too cool for these kinds of stories.

I've read many of these stories, but thanks to te shitty publishing marvel had in my country i read them separately at different times, realizing that all of this was being put out at the same time is mindblowing, this is the marvel i love, and it's gone, vision is the only story currently ongoing that has made me feel as captivated as what came from this era

Bendis' run starts in a couple of issues. He had a short Ben Urich-centered arc before that but it was more of a Mack showcase (every Mack comic is a Mack showcase rather than writer's story)

What will the one-man-army do on an island full of mercenaries, criminals and psychos?

Notice the lack of collected editions. Mass-producing tpbs was another one of Jemas' huge and successful initiatives. I think DC has already started getting the hang of it by this time.

And along with it came a change in how Marvel stories were written, toward the 6-issue storyline and away from the old method of having shorter arcs but endless unspooling soap-opera threads.
>>
>>85476211
Honestly this was a great format, remember how bad it was in the 90s with shit like the clone saga and arcs sprawling through all issues of a character? The series were more condensed in this period, everything felt less chaotic, more controlled

>With her husband Mr. Fantastic locked away in his lab, and her brother the Human Torch out partying, it's time for the Invisible Woman to step into the spotlight and jet out of town. But can a member of the world-famous Fantastic Four enjoy a peaceful vacation? Several of the FF's greatest foes don't think so.

>>85476307
Yes, it was one of the changes that needed to be made.

In the early '00s there was too much of a dogmatic thing of making almost everything be 6 issues even if it didn't need to be. That's mostly not the case any more.

I'll never forgive Winnick for killing Sunfire at the end of his run. It just felt like a case of "if I can't have her, nobody can". Blink's fine and all but I really felt that her and Morph should've been THE Exiles. Both were great character who had great chemistry together, something even Austen was able to understand.

I'm glad Bedard killed Mimic not just for that but he was a boring fucking character too.

Has it ever been revealed who the fuck X was? I can't even seem to find anything about it in Cronin's urban legends column. The most persistent rumor seems to be Howard Mackie but I don't really know why.

>>85474937
I kind of think X-Statix is a tad overrated. It's a good comic but I think after a while the novetly of it wears off and I didn't find many of the characters particularly compelling enough to want to keep reading about. It's a book, like Silver Surfer, where Allred's art makes people believe it's better than it is.

It was a damn sight better than the awful CounterX run before it though which was a shitty follow up to JFM's pretty good one.

>Spider-Man Crawl Space: Is there any truth to you being the writer of the Brotherhood title? If so, what was the decision process behind crediting the writer as "X"?

She wasn't always bad. But she does set a precedent of writers. She was one of the first huge fangirl writers in comics, like she wrote fan fiction and named herself after Dick Grayson fangirl.

The art of this run is what got me into Iron Man. I stuck with it until Tony became Secretary of Defense. Seemed like a good jumping off point to me.
