Did fans at the time really hate this lineup change? Because I like it now but it would enrage me if my superteam was suddenly replaced with nobody characters.

A lot of people didn't like it. (And Stan tried not to print negative letters unless he had to so there must have been a lot of them.)
But sales supposedly went up because fans were mad but bought the comic to see what they were mad about.
And that's how comic book editors decided that whatever makes us mad is good.

Godd dammit, how can a simple man do so much good and so much harm at once?
"every issue is somebody's first", anon... and this was mine. yes, i'm that old. i remember thinking "nooo don't go, i barely knew you" but then i was like "oooh these new guys are cool". plus they were mine... i was on the ground floor and loved it.

That sounds pretty cool.

The difference from that and now, though, was that Marvel knew how to spin controversies around. They knew how to do something outrageous and still make it work, because the basis of storytelling was still intact.
Now, there's no stories. It's just shocking twists with no fluidity, rhyme, or reason. Guys like Slott and Bendis are garbage because they are obsessed with surprise, but give the stories zero backbone.
This guys were the original Avengers to me

Is it true that that run was basically "Adventures with Hawkeye and those other avengers"?

No, not really, they were an equal team, mostly because they were all so individually weak.
A lot of the conflict was Hawkeye being an asshole to Cap though.

You must be senile

It's the original Avengers nobody likes. The Kooky Quartet is a hipster favorite.

I think there was something at least really cool about Cap having to form a team to follow up a really powerful roster of heroes with semi-powerful reformed supervillains.
